I genuinely had a very good accessibility showcase with @Codeberg@social today. We tackled some front end stuff like labeling, screen reader trapping, and even, things like verbosity! More needs to be done, but I wish all open source developers would treat accessibility like they did today. They listened to me, asked questions, asked me to do particular things, took notes, agreed to follow up with me later on, everything! Like I said, more needs to be done, but the meeting I had with them today will make the platform a lot more usable, trust me! #Accessibility #OpenSource

Open source: you all should use open source and private services because we’re not a corporation out to exploit you or your data.

Disabled users: hey, your registration edit field is not labeled so I can’t use my adaptive technology to register or even use your platform. Could you fix it, because, right now, the mainstream/corporate offering has taken accessibility more seriously and I’d rather use a tool/service that I won’t need to struggle with in order to operate.

Open source: what exactly do you expect? We can’t be expected to make things accessible for you, so you can either fork it yourself or just not use our software/services. We’re a small team and corporation has more money than we do so they can devote more time and effort to accessibility. You can always fork the project though and make accessibility yourself!

Disabled user: well, I can’t code, so it looks like I don’t have any other choice but to go back to using this corporate offering that at least took the time to label their registration field correctly and actually took my request more seriously. Oh well, maybe open source tools just aren’t for me.

I remember hearing somewhere and I think this is super true, but the managers and otherwise that wormed their ways into very high positions aren't techies. They're business people, they just rake in cash while the actual developers do the coding. Oh gonna subscribe to your blog soon, do you have an English category I can subscribe to? I am monolingual.

I honestly wish there were more people in tech that actually *tried* to help artists rather than harm us and make us retreat into underground spaces or places where our tech infrastructure isn't as good because, well, very very very few of us are techies. This is a bad year for artists and the tech relationship, especially since the tech that helps us get our messages/art/writing/music/films out there is actively harming us too by stealing from us in multiple ways. Recently, Draft2Digital, a book distributor for indie authors put out a survey signaling to authors that they wanna license our books as training data. So #NaNoWriMo came out with the notion that it's ableist and classist to hate on people using AI to generate their thing. I can assure you that as a Disabled person, not all of us agree.

If you do ask the disability community though, especially the blind community, they do love AI, and they will, especially the blind community, prefer AI over human help or human aids, but that's getting away from the silly statement of it's classist and ableist to hate AI generated things/use for writing.

I plan to write a longer blog post refuting this absurdity later, but, for now, I dunno if NaNoWriMo remembers the literal process of writing, and getting feedback from wonderful community and beta readers and editors and the like, but they seem to have tricked themselves into thinking the beta feedback after, or even before, the writing begins is insignificant. Beta readers can help on outlines, too! Writer partners can brainstorm along with you. To do this, you don't need technology, which is a thing you must have when using any generation machine.

Even poor people like me have landline phones/cell phones and access to instant messengers and SMS and more. Not all, but some do. Trust me, there's a bunch of ways for us to connect, but in order to use AI, you need a few things not everyone has.

* a modern computer.

* Internet.

* Solid hardware. Keys not falling off, etc.

You need better than old tech to effectively use AI. Not everyone has the tech to use AI because the website crashes, and, let's not forget that spinning up an open source model requires technical privilege.

As for the ableism comment by them? Even though other Disabled people use, and even like! AI writing for some reason, to even assume it's automatically coming from a place of privilege to criticize a mockery of actually useful machine learning and also assume that the critiques are unfounded and is by non-disabled people exclusively is ableist of itself.

If you proactively add Alt text and they ask you why, or ask you to stop, then that’s when you can go completely unfiltered on their asses and absolutely ring their neck for not providing. Proactively providing alt text does more to help us than what you are currently doing now. Now if this individual continuously refuses to add alt text without an explanation, or starts whining about why others images with descriptions get shared more than there’s, that’s when you can pop up and explain. So given the recent #Patreon news where Apple will be forcing every creator to give 30% of their earnings by forcing Patreon to use Apple's payment system on all Apple mobile devices, I'd like to talk about a bit of privilege that don't seem to understand, regarding, why don't artists just sell on their own websites!

I'm not sure if people know this, but the longer you're an administrator, the less time you have to make art, and, by extension, this also means that artists can't practice our craft as often so the art goes down. There are a whole dozen other factors as well, but let's start with the paradox that if you would just sell on your own website, you never have to worry about it.

Yes, you do have to worry about it. Every, single, day. Why? Because you need to keep it working and operational. This takes away from making art.

but let's zoom out a bit. Artists, and this includes writers, are broke. you're wrong about artists making money. Writers can't afford your 2 hour course on using Docker, as an example. Moreover, this is the same behavior as the folks that say, just learn to code, bro!

To learn to code, you need time. You need finances to get a stable tech setup. You need to have the chance to just learn something without needing to put other things first like animals or kids or your bills or your home or even day job.

Moreover, you have better tech than we do. The tech artists use is older because writers and artists are poor.

So what can you do about it?

Lend some tech mutual aid. If you love their art so much, make space for them on your server. Build them a computer or offer to buy a custom computer that would be great and would last them a while. Help them out financially. Give to them directly if possible. buy their work. Give them space on your server. Provide them, us, with a safe tech space so we can continue to make the art you like.
