Other Black people moved onto that street and started using it in official capacities. Town officials then posted notices that the road was called “Mains Avenue, and not Doctor Street.” So the Black community called it “Not Doctor Street.” In just a few paragraphs, Morrison does amazing social, cultural and political geography. 2/2

This reminds me of how at the start of her novel, Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison writes this great backstory of "Not Doctor Street." “Not Doctor Street” is also Mains Ave, and it was the road where, in the late19th/ early 20th c, the first and only African-American doctor in the town resided. So Black residents called the road “Doctor Street.” 1/2
