This is the same spider taken with my phone and my "proper" camera. It's worth remembering that cameras are just tools that allow you to create different images with different effects, and are not necessarily better or worse than any other camera. As always the best camera is the one you have with you, and although I would have liked to have had my macro lens with me, being there was the key thing.

Mandarin duck.

It's that time of year when many birds moult. This means smaller birds hide away in the bushes, ducks, geese and swans lose the ability to fly, and I take great joy in pointing out that this is in fact a male mandarin.

This male bird is in eclipse plumage and resembles a female; the duller colours making them less obvious to predators.

I foolishly used to think robins were boring and while I do enjoy going out to watch the more "exciting" bird species, I've found that I also really enjoy watching the more common species. I think I've failed in my attempt to photograph a baby robin this year though, as they've all grown up now.

One extra thing you could try in future, is to put something on the outside of windows, like reflective material or even white sheets. I think you need planning permission to fit external shutters, but it's extremely effective and should be the first option ahead of air con IMO.

I was in town at the time, in a large outdoor seating area for several pubs, with 100 other people. A siren for one of the buildings seemed to go off at the same time. For a moment, I was genuinely worried that something had happened and we were being asked to evacuate the area with all the fuss it caused.

I'm very glad that something is being done, I'm just not convinced that this is the thing. That said, unlike last night there are no fireworks being set off.

I think it's unreasonable to expect people to work (and work equally well) in all conditions. My advice would be to go easy on yourself and if you can, take breaks in a cooler room and do some thinking there rather than at your desk.

Otherwise, some stuff will just have to wait until next week when the weather should be better.

I'm not convinced. I think we probably will need to, just because the costs and suffering of not looking after pets correctly isn't worth it. However, there's a huge environmental cost to keeping pets, in particular cats and dogs. They have a large carbon footprint due to diet, they cause immense harm to our rivers and kill millions of native animals. For example, cats kill one billion animals annually, spread diseases and have been implicated in 60 extinctions worldwide.

Jira will be the easiest option though. Just make sure you configure it to be as simple as possible. The big trap with Jira is setting up complex workflows and lots of customisation.

for me, it depends. Generally, I'm always trying to remove complexity, but pragmatism sometimes has to take over.

What are the implications of merging it? Is it just a bit of slightly convoluted code that hardly anyone will look at or a core part of the system. Is there a deadline? Is someone still working in this area and able to address it later? What's the best way of them learning and improving the code?

At some point I give up, because PRs are just a poor way of doing sw dev.

My GP is basically as close as my pharmacy and I've always found it easy to sign up for a flu jab there. It's also a good opportunity for the nurse to do a mini health check - I've had an extra vaccine for pneumonia, height, weight and blood pressure checks when I've visited.

You can also just book a double appointment and combine it with something else as well.

Also, there's some evidence that flu vaccines reduce your risk of dementia, so well worth it.

I think this is exactly the problem. It's another intervention focused solely on the individual, but really needs to be accompanied by massive infrastructural and legal changes that allow people to walk safely and comfortably as part of their daily life. E.g ban pavement parking, ban SUVs, school streets outside almost every school, 20mph by default, cheaper and more frequent public transport, etc.

Juvenile house sparrow.

This young bird only stopped on the branch for a fraction of a second. I'd been watching them and their family for a while, trying to get a clear shot, but they kept moving around, trying to stay out of sight.

I used to see house sparrows all the time, but their numbers have dropped considerably in the time I've been birdwatching.

Juvenile robin.

A pair of robins have taken up residence in the garden. I've been hearing one singing loudly from the bush outside my study window. They've also been busy hoping around picking up grubs and any other food they can get hold of. Hopefully, in a few months we'll have some baby robins. The app also asks for lots of permissions and has some kind of privacy policy you have to click through, which is incredibly stressful when a loved one is injured and needs help quickly. I can also imagine it being difficult to use in other situations, like heavy rain when the touchscreen doesn't work properly.

At the beginning of the campaign, it was assumed Reform would win this. I spoke to people who weren't going to bother voting because it was so obvious they would and things felt so hopeless. It wasn't hopeless, but it took work.

A Reform win at the next GE isn't inevitable.

Hope will win over hate.

Anyway, hopefully I can ignore politics for a bit and go back to sharing bird photos. Thank you for sticking with me over the last month.

Well, that was an exhausting month. I've knocked on hundreds of doors, lost count of the number of leaflets I've delivered (over 600) and walked 30k steps today alone.

The support we have from every part of the constituency is amazing, but especially Levenshulme and Longsight.

I feel like I've done everything I can right now, which was the point of getting involved. Tomorrow we'll wake up to a different world, one way or another🤞

based on my experience canvassing for the Greens over the last month, and living in the constituency, I am 100% convinced that Labour are going after the Green vote. They're happy to split the vote if it means the Greens don't win.

I don't think you're going to get any convincing evidence, as there's not enough historical data and things are so different this time around anyway.

I can tell you I've been out to Burnage, Levy, Longsight,Denton & Gorton, and the vast majority of posters & signs are Green or Reform. My area is normally all Labour & you wouldn't know that now. I have also spoken to plenty of past and current labour folks who're voting Green

Labour aren't fighting to win, they're fighting to stop the Greens. I don't have evidence, but I have been canvassing with Labour party members who've joined up with the Greens because they're frustrated and desperate to stop Reform (unlike the rest of Labour)

this kind of post really isn't helpful. That house exists and has Reform signs up. I walked around the corner a few minutes ago to check. It's a real photo, although I'm unsure about the poster in the bedroom window and whether that's since been taken down or photoshopped in (my guess is that it was put up just for the photo).

Greens can win this and their signs far outnumber Reform in this part of Denton. We don't need to spread lies about Reform, the truth is bad enough.

The resignation of our local MP and resulting by-election means I'll be mostly focused on politics this month. However, we've been treated to a stunning visitor on our local ponds over the last week. I'm really hoping he'll stay to see the election results at the end of the month and to give me more of a chance to photograph him.

Labour have been out in force for the last week and pushing hard with online ads. Whereas, Reform have been doing a lot on social and mainstream media. So, everything we do really matters, I think.

why be mad at the Greens? Labour are already campaigning extremely hard, when they could chose not to. If the regional projections are right, then it's Labour who are splitting the vote. If they had any decency they'd take a step back from this election.

I'm speaking as someone who has just joined the Greens and plans to campaign to keep Reform out.
