Francis Halzen was all, Hey, let's drill 2500-meter holes in the ice at the literal South Pole and put neutrino detectors down there.

The experiment fills an entire cubic kilometer. That deep ice is so pure that there's nothing for the neutrinos to hit except water molecules, and such collisions produce other particles that then move faster than light speed in ice so produce a flash of Cherenkov radiation, which is what the detectors see. Seeing high-energy neutrinos for the first time is helping with a bunch of outstanding astrophysics questions.

Funded by US tax dollars...yeah, we used to build cool stuff.

The owner of my go-to coffee shop on Kaua'i says business is about 10-20% of pre-Hurricane Lowell numbers.

FEMA did not declare a disaster or emergency for the county (I just checked their website) so small businesses don't have any federal aid. So many people are losing their livelihoods and they're scrambling for state and local resources but nothing would compare to the FEMA aid that isn't here.

Lala and the current storm Nolo have disaster declarations...have no idea why Lowell wouldn't qualify.

His reputation seems to have not taken a hit as far as I can tell. If this happened to a living writer I think there'd be large repercussions for that person's career.

Rachel Aviv & The New Yorker handled the reporting and writing deftly and with sensitivity...maybe that's why. A headline blaring that Sacks was a fabulist probably would've had more impact.

The Kia app has started showing how much power is fed back to the battery for each of my trips and it's typically around 40%. I'm surprised how high it is. ICE vehicles in contrast waste all of their forward momentum when braking.

I've heard of people with 10-year-old EVs in Hawaii who have had to replace rotors and other parts of the brake assembly while the pads look almost new.

No electrical work required; total parts for splitter and charger were less than $400 and about 45 minutes of my time. My electric utility will reimburse me...so it's a free setup.

The dryer takes precedence & the splitter will automatically turn off the charger whenever the dryer runs.

I swear the world is filled with misinformation now as journalism declines and all of the other info-nonsense going on. Yesterday a friend on Kauai said she'd heard mosquitoes were being released to "feed the birds" and was horrified some government agency was adding mosquitoes to the island.

The mosquitoes are infected with bacteria that makes their offspring infertile & the project is to save endemic birds from avian malaria. Nobody reads, it's all a game of telephone.

We were camping on the west side of Kaua'i, at Polihale, a long beach shared with the Pacific Missile Range Facility (aka Barking Sands). MPs told us there'd be a launch.
