imo an easy one is in the Alby Hub examples:
(e.g. https://github.com/getAlby/hub/blob/master/scripts/linux-x86_64/Caddyfile.example#L10-L15 )
just enable HTTP Auth on the webserver.
VPNs etc. are obviously great, too.

generally don't expose things publicly that don't need to be publicly accessible.

OP_RETURN is a provenly-prunable way to embed arbitrary data in bitcoin without bloating the UTXO set. Any ORS post FUNDS the network.

I think there are some fun things to be explored, especially around WoT & reputation, to both reduce spam and create quality feeds. I also plan to add notifications, reactions, and search next.

And I bet pretty much anybody here knows some people who need easier ramps to use bitcoin. From what I hear people here say it's actually one of the main things that prevents zapping.

And I bet anybody here interacts with some entity that sells bitcoin for fiat. We all work to make this less and less but we don't need to lie about it. Any bitcoin tool invites more people to join I wish we would be more constructive about achieving the goal.

but generally I very much agree.
those apps are also not to use, nobody will use them anyway.
I wanted to more share how impressed I was that it seems to build something like that in one shot and even have the prompt written by AI.
The agent already tries to do end to end tests. basic pen test are also possible already I guess.
We’ll see where this all goes.

I like NWC there as I can have very strict permissions and move the control outside of the app. So the trust I need to have in the app is minimal.

I've asked my personal AI agent to build a web application that integrates lightning with replit.
So far it can not interact with the Replit agents directly
But it gave me a prompt for Replit.
Replit then built and deployed the app...in one shot. From idea to working product with zero human intervention.

Here I had some minor adjustments with a few prompts and spent maybe an hour on it.
Amazing that the agents already manage to create and deploy such applications.
Not long ago you would win multi-day team hackathons with such an app.

In that combination of running this publicly and not completing the setup this can be fatal as we sadly had to see.

We made a PR to change this in the albyhub umbrel app (about which also some complained because it broke things) - the umbrel app is community maintained.
Afaik LNBits umbrel says it will not be changed (I don't know the details, but I think this is valid as many things and apps would not work then)

This problem might exist on other deployments, too. And it is also not unique to umbrel: if you install some wordpress and don't complete the setup then some attacker might be able to take over the server.

what you say is wrong and misses reality (just check LNBits for example) It leaves out that you did not run through the setup, that you opened up umbrel to the public net. etc. Maybe also engage with the related umbrel discussions.

Even hinting to bad actors because of some config (which you seem to not understand) is imo wrong and pretty sad.

But blaming Alby and hinting "bad actors" is too much there.
Everybody at Alby is driven by the same love to Bitcoin as you are and has been doing all work open source and available to everyone.

The problem that you describe is not even related to something that Alby builds but the umbrel app setup and the way you have been running things.
LNBits is currently vulnerable to this problem and they will not change this because it is how it should work. You have to know how to use it!

Do not run Umbrel publicly available, make sure you do the setups as required and if you run it publicly make sure to harden it.

It sucks that there are actors stealing from community projects like yours but now blaming other open source projects and calling them "bad actors" is a bit too much.
So please be a bit honest... denouncing other projects and calling them "bad actors" is just wrong.
I hope it helps with dealing with the pain, but please don't do it like this.
