I got these new Knipex smooth-jawed pliers that are some next-level stuff for a tool geek like me. Not only do they set to a certain size via a convenient button that holds them at that size, but one side is pre-marked for metric size and the other has Standard. This is some very well thought-out engineering.

I geeked out so much over this 12" version when I got them last week that today my little 5" version that I ordered showed up.

#PhotoOfTheDay is an old snapshot I took of a colorful California king snake I encountered while hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains near Mt. Umunhum.

I've come across king snakes over the years while hiking, but the others have all been the brown-patterned variety. This was the only one I've encountered with the red coloring, and it really gets your attention on the trail!

The king snake is not venomous.

That's true. Having a recent adventure always makes everything better - especially those dull work meetings! I always felt that weekends were for long hikes etc. and then going into the office was the ideal time to recover.

One of the things I learned in SAR is that the same demographic that compose most SAR teams are almost exactly the same as the people who SAR get called out to help. 😂

Playing in streams was probably my son's favorite thing while growing up. When he went to college he moved up from streams to the large river that ran through town. :)

Of course, they're more fun to get into *if you want to* get into them, and preferably not in that sudden, unwelcome way... I Once got to work at IBM one morning and sat though a couple of meetings with one leg of my jeans soaked to the knee. 😂

The big chunks of granite in the Sierra streams/rivers are often *very* slippery, which is one of the main reasons that people go over nearby waterfalls in Yosemite.

Trekking poles are also great for those log/tree crossings. A tripod is much more stable than having just one leg planted on the ground while walking across.

Congrats! I have the same one still, although I haven't used it in a long time... I used it for about a decade on the roof of our old house for my wideband scanner, which it worked great for. I used it for monitoring military and other air traffic in the days after 9/11 among other things.

Quest was the ship that Shackleton died on some years earlier. Its wreck was discovered fairly recently.

Yes, that's it. I forgot that most people call it Rest Step. :) I was taught that it's like an exaggerated bride walk step, although admittedly I have emo personal experience with trying that myself. 😁 There seem to be different ways the details are taught too.

Briefly: Both feet flat on ground. Lift one leg, swing it & have it straight when it lands while the other leg is normal. You then pivot your body over the straight leg, using less energy. Do this with alternate legs. Slow & steady.

I'm the same. It helped me realize there was a corner of California I'd never seen so we took a family road trip for several days through there back in 2006.

Much of the fun of geocaching is exploring and seeing interesting locations, to me anyway. My philosophy with places caches has always been that the location or the cache *has* to be interesting, or both.
