Get in bed with hot water bottle. Bored in the afternoon? I could cozy up in bed with the hot water bottle. Not even chilly in the house? Still, wouldn’t it be nice to cozy up with . .
Good grief.
Very tickled, though, that the two elderly pillowcases, whose matching sheet wore out years ago, are back in active use after languishing in the bottom of a box for years.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831675149970554880

#waterbottle #hotwater #theeeeeprahblem #bitcozier #tinybit #bottleeven #oldflannel #get #bored #still

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Sometimes I think about how mature I’ve gotten as I’ve aged - so much less reactive! - more distress tolerance! - and then I end up in a Situation and realize that that was all Social Isolation keeping me safe, actually.
This morning bright and early I set off to a Dr’s office for a women’s health checkup. The first thing I saw when I entered the office was a frankly magnificent floof of a black & white dog doing its best impersonation of a very flat puddle on the floor. Next to its human, of course.
I checked in and sat down at the other end of the room. In a few minutes, someone came out and called the other lady’s name. “Do you have anyone with you?” the staffmember asked her, “because you can’t bring the dog in the back.”
Folks, I will spare you the Very Long back-and-forth dialogue that resulted. The patient was, well, patient for quite a while, trying to convey that service dogs, of which this is one, go where their people go. The staffperson, who stated that she was the office manager, obdurately insisted that the dog Could Not Come Back. I’m not a lawyer, but I’m reasonably certain that Patient was legally in the right, and also that she was telling the truth when she stated that she had had her dog with her in appointments before with no issue in that same office. OM didn’t seem to be powertripping or mean, but insanely fixed on refusing Patient service for what I gather (and I very much should not have had to hear this) was an important, time sensitive visit involving a shot and some kind of cancer-care.
I, on the other side of the room, felt like I was about to have a stroke from secondhand tension. My tolerance for listening to people argue is very, very low. I was called back, and I don’t know how this all turned out, but I do know that Patient was on the phone with the hospital Admin when I left trying to get somebody who understood service animal law to intervene. I personally could think of three different ways they could have accommodated her getting her shot without breaking their highly questionable “no dogs in the back” rule. At no point did OM think of or offer any accommodations.
I was vibrating slightly when my nurse took me back to an exam room. Fortunately, there was a slight delay before she took my bloodpressure, and it regularized. I had to explain to / remind both the nurse and then the doctor about the drama and difficulties I had gone through earlier this year with HRT. He agreed to send another Rx to the pharmacy to try a different formulation of estrogen. “If this doesn’t work,” I joked, “maybe I can just try testosterone!” haha. unless?
Then it was time for my pap smear. Joy. They had music playing quietly, but it wasn’t bland instrumental stuff. In fact, I had to get a papa smear while Shania Twain sang “THAT DON’T IMPRESS ME MUCH” boldly over the speakers. Surreal experience. SO YOU’VE GOT THE MOVES BUT HAVE YOU GOT THE TOUCH? Shania, ma'am, that’s a speculum.
The appointment wrapped up, the doctor shook my hand politely and left, and I re-dressed. Left the room while the J. Geils Band was fretting about “my angel is a centerfold.”
I ate a large, emotionally nourishing breakfast when I got home.
@firewatchers Well, I followed up on your suggestion. Don’t know that anyone’s listening on the other end, but the words “ADA violation” were used!

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831657641539469312

#well #very #back #anyone #listening #socialisolation

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Boy, this is a mess. What used to be a flower bed now has too much shade from the shrubs to support sun-loving flowers, but also gets a blast of the hottest afternoon sun, so the shade-lovers don’t do well there, either. In any case, I have to focus my gardening efforts on the veggies in summer. I ended up with a solid mass of tall weeds; goldenrod and wild sunflower taller than I am, a few asters and other things. Monday morning I pruned the shrubs just slightly, to get them away from the windows a tad bit, and started cutting down the stalks of the uninvited plants.
The fall foliage has been unique this year. Quite a few trees just - still green! At the end of October? Others that should have been colorful were very drab. Many are bare at this point.
The house looks so small from this angle. Why did we plant the shrubs so close? Surely we knew better. Oh, for a time machine.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831663164954411008

#october

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      Afternoon nap. Live deliciously.

Afternoon nap. Live deliciously.
Two people have brought it to my attention that one of those weirdos who reads other peoples’ funny posts on a monetized YT account (on a Minecraft background? For some reason?) has posted the Hero & Nutmeg Pool Noodle Disaster recently. @gargelyfloof118 sent me a link, which I watched with bemusement. Then one of my son’s friends told me that he was listening to a random mix of YT videos on his early morning commute, and suddenly became aware that the story he was hearing - sounded awfully familiar? Nutmeg and Hero? Are celebrities? Holy cow!!
Nutmeg and Hero are both getting older. And both still blissfully unaware of the internet.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831579278691942400

#afternoonnap #nutmeg #hero #noodledisaster #poolnoodle #two #holy

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      Poem

ahedderick:
“I AM NOT A POET,” I state, definitively. The poem, ignoring me, continues to flutter around the inside of the car, battering the windshield and my head with its tiny wings. Exasperated, I pull over at the entrance to a seldom-used dirt road. If I don’t give in and write the damned thing down, it will likely cause me to wreck.
They’re tenuous these
spider strands, silken threads, flaxen fibers that
bind us across states and continents
across the sea a friendly firefly spark
Dutch denizen of flat fields and flowers
a red goddess of discord counterintuitively
loving forge, flame, and family
generous alchemist, daughter of east and west
mothers new, watching toddler steps, and
older, letting go of children grown
we water our plants and bitch about them
ducks and dogs or ivy-wrapt bones
shall I send you a rock?
a wild walker of mountains and trails
Mutuals
Beloved
“Are you bloody-well satisfied?” I ask the tiny shape. It settles onto the back of the envelope. Flicking its wings, testing the words on paper with unknowable sensors on its miniscule feet. Accepting them, it hmmms a clear note, then vanishes. I am not a poet. I just can’t get the damned poems to leave me alone.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831217828927504384

#poem #mutualsbeloved #dutch #exasperated

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

As I got closer to the barn I…

ahedderick:
Quietly spooky
This is your Spooky Season reminder that some spider species have a tapetum lucidium, allowing their lateral eyes to shine like cats’ and dogs’ do. So, if you go out on a dark early-fall evening before the dew has appeared and shine a dim led light* around, you can see dozens of tiny ‘sparks’ in the grass and weeds. Those are spiders’ eyes.
’* I realize that 'dim’ and 'led’ sound like opposing concepts. I have a headlight, however, that has a bright white setting and two dimmer settings for red and green. The dimmer settings really bring out that eyeshine!
(There is a paragraph in the wiki article about spiders specifically)
Tapetum lucidum - Wikipedia
“Most species of spider also have a tapetum, which is located only in their smaller, lateral eyes; the larger central eyes have no such structure. This consists of reflective crystalline deposits and is thought to have a similar function to the structure of the same name in vertebrates. Four general patterns can be distinguished in spiders:”
Last night I went out to put goats in the barn slightly after dark. As I got closer to the barn I could see a sizeable, bright spark winking in the taller grass at the edge of the yard. Seemed too big to be a spider, unless maybe it was a great big wolf spider. I went over, and it turned out to be - a very ordinary-sized wolf spider. Only about an inch/2.5cm across. I couldn’t imagine why her eye shine was visible from a good 8yds/meters away.
But this morning I started thinking - “bigs my eyes at you!” Tumblr-poisoned as I am. Did. Did she 'big’ her eyes at me? Stars shining above and spiders shining below. What a world.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831185981031989248

#barnslightly #gotcloser #dark #goats #night #tapetum #spookyseason

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Ditto.
The pants weigh less than a pound, so I only had to use half the bottle of dye. Depending on how these come out after a wash or two, I may go back and redo the process with the other half of the dye, because I do want them very dark.
Please ignore how long it was between the first post and the update.
End result: for the shade of purple, 10/10, it is just what I wanted. A dark, reddish purple. Unintended consequences, 5/10, I did not think about the fact that the dye process is fiber-specific, and the thread used to sew the pants is not linen!
Oh, well. I’m just going to have to deal with that. It’s not like I’m planning to wear them to highly formal occasions.
Purple!! Just business

September 8th I talked to a real estate lawyer about some issues with my father’s property. She said that Step 1 would be a title search (just a formality). October 13th, over a month later, I called to ask - how that was going? And was brusquely told that it was being reviewed, but she did them in the order she received them (so be more patient). The thing is, for a pro forma issue like this, I think five weeks IS being patient.
September 17th I dropped a loose stone off at a jewelers to have it made into a pendant with a simple setting (he’ll have to order it). A month later I called the guy. “Ooh, yeah, that order hasn’t come in, I’ll call them,” he tells me. Now. Come on. If he’d actually ordered it, it would have come.
I contacted the electric company to get an address change on one of the bills (farms can have multiple bills, ie one for the house and one for the barn). Change one, leave the other alone, kinda thing. Nope, BOTH got changed. Even though they’re separate accounts. I changed payment processing so that Son would be taking care of the bill for Home Farm. They messed that up, too. THEN happened to find out they’d seriously overbilled for several months in a row. Sheee-it.
And it just … adds up. All the double-checking to make sure professionals actually DO the job. And do it correctly. That. That shouldn’t be on me!! THEFT OF EXECTUTIVE FUNCTIONNNNN!

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831182901297217536

#come #september #step #change #homefarm #ooh #both #functionnnnn

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

I rest much better if I’m not getting cold and trying to scrunch myself into a smaller and smaller ball! Recently K started needing one, too, so we got a second. I notice that she was trying to wrap hers in a hand towel, and that spurred me to (finally) Do Something about a cover for it.
Last evening I scrounged around in the closet in my very tidy box of pillowcases and found two old ones that I haven’t used in a long time. The sheets that went with them wore completely out, so they filtered to the bottom of the pile. I tri-folded it to get it approximately the right size and then quick-and-dirty stitched it into shape. Plunked the hot water bottle in. It didn’t actually bother me that it didn’t have one, but I know it’s preferable … so it feels good to have that done.
I’ll do the other one today and leave it on her bed for when she comes home on Friday. Feels like - getting something from nothing!

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831088650554146816

#hotwater #waterbottle #hotstone #stonewrapped #denim #feet #something #feels #friday

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      Garlic

My sad little single clove of elephant garlic that I planted last fall turned into such a lovely bulb this summer. Even though I completely forgot that I planted it and got confused by the long, green leaves coming up in the strawberry bed LOL!
I saved one clove from the bulb and planted it in with my asparagus recently. It needs to be somewhere that doesn’t get tilled, and I don’t have a dedicated allium bed. Yet. I got a package the other day
to plant more. K and I got six cloves in the ground last evening, and I’ll try to finish the rest today. Need to get cracking, actually. The frost is off the ground and Hero is staring pointedly at the house waiting for breakfast.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/831089063166705664

#garlic #lol #hero #even

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Change in the weather creates problems

Houseplant people during the summer, when some of their plants are out on the porch: ehheheheee, I have so much room on my shelf! Just one - or two - more plants … I could root some cuttings …
Houseplant people in the fall when it’s time for the porch plants to come back inside: oh. oh no. how did this happen?
Triple living room windows (southwest exposure) have two or even three rows of plants. Plants that only accept indirect light are in the bathroom. Something colonizing the windowsill by the sewing machine. Girl!! Why do you have close to 40 plants??
I bought her empty pots for her birthday, and she suffered agonies trying to figure out which plant should go in each one. Since I learned them, I have rarely run into anyone else who has ever heard of them. This is maddening to me because:
I got a teaching degree at college. Secondary math. Someone, at SOME point, shoulda mentioned dyscalculia.
Both my kids have it. Which means I have had to discuss it with various teachers. They are all perplexed to realize that there is a math learning disability analogous to dyslexia.
EVERYBODY seems to know about dyslexia!
At any rate. If I hadn’t followed one Tumblr person who posted about dyscalculia with very clear descriptions of how it affects her, I would not have been able to figure out what was going on with my own kids. I would not have been able to educate other people about it. And I can’t freaking beLIEVE that my kids made it all the way through elementary school without anyone ever telling me, “Hey, Kiddo is a great student, but you should see your doctor to check on issues of dyslexia/dyscalculia/adhd/autism.”
Aside from that one rather nasty reading specialist who pulled me aside one day and told me that Son was a good kid, but “There’s something wrong with him, like, neurologically.”
That was TRUE, as it turned out! But she said it in such a SNIDE way, and without any details that would have pointed me in the right direction! She could have said “I’m seeing signs of X and Y, and I’d like you to follow up with his pediatrician for an evaluation for those things. Dr can send me a form to fill out my observations if she wants to.”
That would have actionable! “Something wrong with him” was NOT actionable! I’m ranting, and this all happened quite a few years ago. But, wow. Tumblr saved the day, I guess. Sorry to rant, but - for those who teach, and for those who have small children; please be aware of these things. If kids are struggling a whole lot and don’t seem to progress even though they’re clearly trying - they likely have a reason for it! I really gave this some thought since you posted it. I have a theory, based on my experiences as a…

rederiswrites:
elen-aranel:
rederiswrites:
I would love to understand how the Amish convinced everyone to see them as just quaint, devout Christians who work really hard, when they are absolutely and beyond a shadow of a doubt a high-control cult. One with well-documented practice of beating wives and children, even babies and toddlers. One with a long record of sexual abuse and child sexual abuse. Where leaving means taking a high risk of never talking to your family again, and being sexually assaulted as a woman or girl may mean getting shunned right alongside the person who assaulted you–because it’s your fault for tempting them.
The more I learn, the angrier I get, and the more baffled I am as to how the Amish are so generally positively regarded.
I’m not American and very ignorant about the Amish. But I wonder if they get away with it because they pre-date the concept of a cult?
Like they’ve been there for a long time so they’re “normal”.
And because they speak a language that’s not widely spoken in America
I’m sure that’s part of it. At least here in the US, I think there are blinders on cults that have been around for many generations. And of course the Amish are mostly out of sight, out of mind. You only see what they want you to see, and they close ranks hard when the “worldly” law gets involved, because ultimately they don’t really acknowledge the secular government as having authority over them.
I really gave this some thought since you posted it. I have a theory, based on my experiences as a rural person. Bear in mind, I actually have at least one living neighbor who has used horses for farmwork instead of tractors, because of the slope of the ground, here.
Ok, my theory. Up into the 1920s, the Amish weren’t living all that differently than the other rural people. LOTS of people didn’t not have home electric and used outhouses, for example, at that time. And, also, the abuse.
During the 30s and 40s, things shifted a LOT as far as electricity, running water, mechanization, etc. However, everybody had far bigger issues to worry about than the Amish. The Depression! The War!
Enter the 50s. By this point, everyday rural life was significantly different for Amish and non-Amish. HOWEVER! Most of the adults at that time could remember their parents or grandparents living without power or running water. It may have seemed charming, like going back to memories of childhood. [And, like, abuse of women is still legal(ish), non-Amish women couldn’t have bank accounts either, etc.]
I feel like that ‘wholesome’ image of the Amish came out of some romanticized memories of folks in the midcentury, and the willingness to overlook the nastiness and patriarchal authority was baked into both cultures.
Ideally, we’d have re-evaluated at some point.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830949504567099392

#amish #based #experiences #like #however

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      A Year in the Making

Last October there was an evening when I was out at the far edge of the lawn at the end of dusk. There was a gorgeous half moon high in the sky, and I could see the windows of my house glowing warmly. The tall weeds and wildflowers in the creek bottom and the last bit of foliage on the trees was still just faintly visible, and the sky was a beautiful wash of blues. I was in love with the scene, and wanted to paint it. Wanted to paint it a LOT. Don’t have a camera that could even remotely capture that low-light, though, and the moment was so fleeting.
Last week I looked up the moon phases and asked my son if he could bring his good camera up on Sunday evening around 7pm. Can we? Get the shot? That one just-right shot??
And I’m happy to say that he did! I can’t wait to see the results. However, he will be out of town for work for the next couple of days, and then getting ready for a big music event at Home Farm at the end of the week. I don’t know when he’ll have a spare moment to edit the shots and send them to me.
I’m excited, tho. I can’t believe everything lined up so neatly. Moon phase / foliage / weather / son’s availability. I am going to be so, so calm and patient about this. So calm.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830909806126694400

#moon #homefarm #wanted #lot

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

so recently learned about how in the 1920s in the Midwest, Italians and other Catholic immigrants…

standwithdaanes:
so recently learned about how in the 1920s in the Midwest, Italians and other Catholic immigrants (as well as Jewish people, and others) started just fucking beating the shit out of Klansmen, and then forming a mock group called the Knights of the Flaming Circle (which developed connections to bootleggers, because the Klan was also very pro-Prohibition) to burn tires on the lawns of Klansmen and intimidate them, and then a town in Ohio had an all-out riot because of the election of a Klan-associated mayor (who had his house blown up!), resulting in the Ohio National Guard having to be called, and afterwards there was never another attempt at a Klan rally in the town and an Italian guy would drive around with a stolen Klan robe stuffed into the grill of his car. can we bring back this energy

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830726248589328384

#othercatholic #catholicimmigrants #recentlylearned #midwest #ohionational #flamingcircle #klan #nationalguard

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      Undecided

I got an invitation to put work in a “Support the Library” charity show, and I’m kind of on the fence about it. Pros; I really need to sell some stuff, and I do want to support the library. Cons; The studio that’s holding this is over an hour round trip for me, the person in charge is having aging issues that might hinder them doing a good job, and I would REALLY hate to participate and then have my piece not sell. Also, you have to pay to enter, which is not the norm for charity shows.
If I decide to do this, it’ll be one of these two.
Which one?
Winter Sunset
Rushing Water

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830732913450565632

#rushingwater #sunsetrushing #which #wintersunset #pros #cons

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      White car, why?

Strange situation. Recently I visited Son in the evening. We walked around Home Farm a little, talking about his work and some farm issues. The work we did last month (moving rocks by hand!) to slightly change the course of the creek looks good; there has been enough rain to bring a good flow back to it and it’s keeping to the channel instead of trying to chew the side of the road. Yay!
The lane to the black barn intersects the public road. We were standing on the lane, around ten yards/meters away from the road, talking about a juniper shrub that may need to be removed. A car came along the road and slowed, then stopped, a short distance away from us. I glanced that way, but assumed the person needed to stop to take a phone call or something. We weren’t in their way at all! The driver flashed their headlights at us. Baffled, we moved even further away from the road. They tooted their horn! Why!?
It took a long, uncomfortable time for the driver to finally start up again and cruise on past. I was beyond puzzled. Even if we HAD been standing at the edge of the road, the norm would be for the driver to just go on by. There are no sidewalks in a rural area like this, people who want to walk or jog just have to go along the edge of the road. I will never know. Almost had to have been someone drunk or stoned who severely misperceived the situation.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830738208755236864

#car #homefarm

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

New tractor parts have been ordered. Imagine my delight when I came down from the hill at midday,…

ahedderick:
ahedderick:
At the beginning of the month my husband and I were looking at our finances. The biggest bills (farm ins, car ins, property tax) happen in spring and summer. We thought, whew, ok, we have a little breathing space here to maybe recuperate from All That.
Then, within two days, the blue tractor developed a big and very expensive problem in its front axle, and Husband’s truck (which is old but has only about 90,000 miles on it) developed an issue so serious that the mechanic just told us to bring it home and run it on the farm only until it dies. The smaller tractor, which Husband spent two months during the summer trying to get someone to fix, needed one more little tweak. We’ve been waiting on the mechanic to have time to do that last little thing for about a month. He’s finally here today. So maybe we’ll have ONE thing actually running?
I don’t know. We can’t cope with firewood and other farm chores without a truck. I just. Augh.
Tractor Repair Guy (picture a member of ZZ Top but in mechanic’s clothes) says “NOPE!” After poking around the thing he thought was the Last Problem, he believes there is something else wrong.
New tractor parts have been ordered. Imagine my delight when I came down from the hill at midday, after checking on the goats, to find my husband lying on the ground beside the lawnmower, staring under it disconsolately. @#*$&#$%*@&#$
Son came over and peered underneath the mower with Husband. Son’s first girlfriend was a very mechanically-minded young lady and taught him some car/truck/tractor basics that he has expanded on greatly over the last couple of years. Husband is a forester and a woodworking Guy, not a mechanical Guy.
After some study (and a bit of pointless arguing) the offending belt was rerouted, replaced, and the mower was back in order. He got the yard done before it snapped completely.
I’m just. jeez.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830755269336268800

#tractor #husband #ordered #guy #imagine #midday #hill #repairguy #problem

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      ahedderick:
They’re not getting any younger
INTERESTING meeting last night.
Last week Son got a strange text followed by a stranger phone call. His first thought was ‘scammer,’ of course, but it ended up being someone who was doing some genealogical research of their own and looking for a long-past family member’s grave. One thing Home Farm does NOT have is a historical graveyard, so we were unable to help that person. The person did mention the name of the family who owned Home Farm something like three owners ago, which even I didn’t know - so, neat? I guess. And then Son and I got to wondering.
I tried (after the oral history episode with Crazy Neighbor Frank) to do an oral history project with my father. It would have been a great thing to do! If he had been a little more willing. After a few attempts, with only a very little success, I gave it up.
Now that he’s gone, though, and the kids are adults, we’re coming up with questions we wish we could ask. After Son’s phone call, I thought we should go visit Neighbor J Sr, who has been living in this valley since around 1948. We have a long and mostly-pleasant history, my family and his. Friday evening worked for everybody, so last night Son walked west and I walked east and we met at Neighbor’s house.
It was a really interesting time. He and his wife did not have crystal-clear memories*, but we tried to gather what info we could about their farm, our farm, and the neighborhood in general. The land; what did former farmers grow here and what animals did they have. The equipment; we found out that the big, three-phase motor that runs the defunct-sawmill actually came from an old brewery that was being torn down in town. A few personal details about former owners. A few family anecdotes, their and ours. She related the story of when I got run over by a tractor (which I of course remember all-too-well) but added the detail that she personally yelled at my father about it both before AND after the event because she didn’t think he was being careful enough with Little Me. Getting a Piece of Ms J’s Mind is a memorable event, and it tickled me to think of my formidable, loud, short-tempered father getting yelled at by someone just slightly more formidable, louder, and shorter tempered.
We were very glad we did it. And then we walked home, in the dark, with stars overhead, in the cool October air.
’* In retrospect, after doing oral history with two family members and Neighbor J, Crazy Frank was spectacularly well organized and had an amazing gift for orderly story-telling. I did not appreciate him enough at the time.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830194976241664000

I stalled a bit on this project, but got back to it this morning. The buttons, delightfully, were…

ahedderick:
Pants. These pants fit everywhere except the waist. That could be fixed several ways, including opening up those pleats. However, the odd way the pleats go over the waistband would make that complicated, I’d have to cut and patch the waistband in two places, and I’m not just not loving the idea. Putting a triangular extension in the fly is a quick and not-pretty option, but since I’ll be wearing my shirts untucked and covering it, I think that’s what I want to do.
First the buttons come off. Do I trust them to stay where I put them? No. Do I trust myself to remember where I put them? No. PINNED to pincushion for buttons!
I stalled a bit on this project, but got back to it this morning. The buttons, delightfully, were pinned to the pincushion right where I left them. I have a master’s degree in figuring out how NOT to lose stuff because I have a PhD in losing stuff. This time, I won.
I applied the panel to the non-button side using large basting stitches, tried it on, marked where the buttons go, and then put them on. Also, after the trying-on, I resewed the first seam because the basting stitches were, in fact, in the correct spot.
Got distracted and left the project for two hour.
Second try-on. Pants are too big. The thing is, my waist just DOES THAT. It can fluctuate by 2in/5cm for seemingly no reason at all. I’m going to leave those buttons right where they are - but add a second set.
The Buttonbox of Antiquity has me covered. I chose the pair at the top, and set to applying them with only a very small amount of grump. If I need to put on a third set, so help me, I will do it!
I’m sewing like a Klingon today. I will defeat these pants in battle or die trying. Seamripper/bat'leth solidarity.
Aaand there I are! Crazy that they needed enlarged at the waist when the rest of the fit is so relaxed, even baggy.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830286021902155776

      Thanks @axiolotl for your reccommendation! I got a CyberPower something-or-other. Finding an…

ahedderick:
ZAP
About two weeks (or so) ago, my desktop froze up. The keyboard restart shortcut wouldn’t work. I ended up having to unplug it. Once it had had a minute, I replugged it and turned it back on. It was fine, sort of, but for one thing. All my bookmarks (all of them!) were gone. I could not set new ones. It was the strangest thing. I put it on my master-to-do-list to take the whole darned thing to town for someone to look at it (and do the updates I can’t do here because of slow internet).
Then, yesterday, the power went out. It was only out for a minute or two. I restarted my computer once the power was back on. All is fine. But. All my bookmarks are back?
I am so confused.
Anyhow, I decided that having a battery packup would be a good idea. Brief power outages are pretty common, here (resetting clocks is like a whole hobby for me), and protecting the computer from that seems like a good idea. So, for any of my lovely followers who have experience with this, may I have your opinion?
Thanks @axiolotl for your reccommendation! I got a CyberPower something-or-other. Finding an instruction sheet for start-up a surprise, but it ended up just being
Plug it in 8 hours before you use it, so you can start off with a full charge and
turn it off and unplug it before plugging your computer in. Then replug it and turn it on.
That part’s a little concerning, because I’m not altogether certain I’ll remember that if I have to move things or change coomputers down the road. I may make a little sign, laminate it, and paste it to the baseboard behind the unit. Also - I had little tags on all my plugs, saying which was the lamp, printer, etc. Where did my tags go?
I moved a bureau, lamented the heaps of dust and cobwebs behind it (WAAAAAH!) plugged in the Thing, and waited. Then unplugged it and the tan power strip I’m replacing, swapped the cables around, and got things started back up. Guess what? More dust behind the desk. Blech.
Things seem ok, and I should be less inconvenienced by the semi-frequent mini-outages we get. It does beep loudly when there’s an outage, but so does my microwave and oven. Delightful at 3am, to be sure.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830286986651844608

I have, at 57 yrs of age, a pronounced “baby bump.” And this is Tumblr, where statistically improbable numbers of zebras frolic around in the horse herd, so I will note that I’m reasonably sure this is not a tumor.
Got me thinking, though.

      Tabitha

Eleven years ago someone tossed the cat we call Tabby out of a car down in the gap past Home Farm. It’s far from any house, and she just stayed right in that area meowing pitifully until we scooped her up.
We (primarily K) convinced me father to take her in. He was not a big fan of cats, but also unable to say ‘no’ to K. Few people can. Then he got quite fond of her. Cat treats were spotted in his kitchen. They lived happily together until he passed, two crabby bitches who reached an understanding. So - That sorta makes her my sister?
Now my son lives in that house, and is very solicitous in taking care of Tabby. Switched her to 'senior’ food recently. While he’s out of town working, I take care of her. Which makes her my - grandcat? That is how I came to be hunched over scampering around the yard at Home Farm a few minutes ago, trying to catch her. She did not want to be caught. Two crabby bitches, yada-yada. Rosalie wanted to 'help’, which very much wasn’t helping. One of us won that confrontation.
It’s a cool, mild night. The crickets and katydids are still singing, as we have not yet had frost. Maybe next weekend.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830406054558973952

They had a great time and admired many pumpkins! At this point, however, I’m missing her to a ridiculous degree and frothing impatiently for her to come home tomorrow afternoon. Lemon cake, potato soup. Possibly a movie night.
I just. Augh.
Tractor Repair Guy (picture a member of ZZ Top but in mechanic’s clothes) says “NOPE!” After poking around the thing he thought was the Last Problem, he believes there is something else wrong.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830555055776301056

Husband brought him inside. I’m at the other end of our not-very-big house, and on a different floor. I started hearing faint Noises. I ignored. The noises became louder and more distressing. I considered holding my hands over my ears. I have had my share of gastric distress and given birth twice, and I don’t know WHAT could have been going on down there. After approximately one (1) eternity, TRG went back outside and they are head-down in the guts of the tractor discussing parts again. I meanwhile, have tears rolling down my face. Shaking. Scream-laughing very quietly. help. help.

https://ahedderick.tumblr.com/post/830557334816292864

      Overcast

Today is an overcast, drizzly day. Not depressing, though - after the summer heat I’m enjoying any and every other type of weather.
