Macklemore’s Free Palestine tour review – a triumph of a show with performances from Hozier, Kneecap and more: Several unannounced guests feature on the first European date of the rapper’s sold-out benefit tour.

"We’d like to thank Ed Sheeran for organising this concert,” offers a member of Kneecap, one of several unannounced guests who have turned up for the first European date of Macklemore’s Free Palestine tour. It’s a characteristically two-fisted approach to the matter in hand from a band who have seldom shied away from controversy, but it has more than a grain of truth in it.

The events of the last six weeks are quite something, and perhaps not what Robert Kraft, the billionaire owner of the New England Patriots, had in mind when he led efforts to pressurise Sheeran to remove Macklemore from his summer US tour, after the rapper made a speech about Palestine on stage at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Macklemore was duly removed from the tour, but the rapper saw his profile rise dramatically as a result – in fairness, he was hardly unknown, but his biggest hits are a decade old – while every other artist on Sheeran’s tour quit in solidarity. Sheeran’s tour limped on amid much opprobrium, while Macklemore was able to translate the publicity into a tour of his own, in noticeably bigger venues than he played on his last European tour, with proceeds donated to organisations assisting Palestinians."

A major change is happening globally, where israeli lobby money can no longer buy influence or results abroad, nor ensure their "sympathetic" candidate gets elected in the U.S. either. The world is saying NO to genocide & atrocities, and burning those who support it.

Breaking: Palestinians in Hebron attack area given 5 minutes to evacuate their homes

"The Israeli bulldozers started demolishing structures and buildings around the area where the attack has happened. According to local sources, they say that people were given only five minutes to evacuate their homes before these demolitions started.

We are talking about threats coming from left, right, and centre. We listened to Itamar Ben-Gvir, the national security minister, say that the Palestinian Authority should be dismantled.

We also heard Bezalel Smotrich saying that demolitions will target illegal structures that were built without a permit. Needless to say, Israel almost never gives these permits to Palestinians, and that’s why they have to build without them, to allow for the natural growth of the population.

This could be one of the fastest times we’ve seen these demolitions being concluded and being requested and implemented since an attack happens.

Usually, when an attack takes place, the perpetrator’s home gets demolished, but that requires the family to be notified, and sometimes given a chance to appeal that decision.

Of course, that appeal never goes through, and eventually, the demolition happens, but that due process is being deprived here, potentially, because some of these homes have been alerted previously that they will be demolished.

But it cannot be disconnected from what the Israeli right and far right is doing, which is using this attack as leverage, as fuel, for their electoral campaign. They are showing force, showing violence, using these demolitions that are happening right now as a way to lobby for more votes. To show Israelis that they are cracking down on Palestinians, even those who had nothing to do with the attack."

Still getting that odd timing out happening with site unknown being reported back sometimes (using Google DNS), the only thing I can think of is that when you moved servers one of the hops hasn't updated/proliferated the new server IPs, so it's trying to send me to the wrong place whenever the request happens to use that particular router, as this only started happening a few days after moving to upcloud.

In its decision, the commission accepts that the extension of the Hunter Valley Operations’ mine for a further 19 years – resulting 809m tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution – will materially worsen global warming. The panel members cite CSIRO’s finding that climate change is having a growing effect on the lives and livelihoods of all Australians and that the severity of that impact “will depend on the speed at which global greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced”.

"When Usman asked if a keyboard for sale on Facebook Marketplace was still available on Saturday, he received an enthusiastic and immediate response.

“Yep still available!” wrote Matt Robb.

The two agreed on a price, and Robb sent his Toronto address. Usman, wife and daughter in tow, showed up several hours later at Robb’s home and sent a text that he had arrived.

Robb responded, “yep I’m here!”, but he was not at home. Nobody walked out of the apartment building.

Usman had not contacted the real Robb. Throughout the daylong interaction, the human version of Robb never knew Usman had messaged him or had agreed to buy the keyboard. He did not know Usman had received his address or that he was waiting outside his apartment building.

Usman had spoken to Meta’s new AI agent, Muse, released 22 September in the US and downloaded 3m times. The company advertises the semi-autonomous AI product as a personal assistant.

Without Robb’s consent or approval, Muse had given out his home address, creating the false impression that Robb was expecting the would-be buyer at his apartment, he said."

"For decades, Israel’s greatest advantage in the West was not simply military or political support. It was narrative power.

That power has not disappeared. But the extraordinary controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s US tour shows how rapidly it is eroding.

What was different this time was the backlash.

In response to the censorship, every remaining support act on Sheeran’s tour walked away. Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga all withdrew. Meanwhile, ticket prices for Sheeran’s remaining concerts plunged, in some cases losing 50 percent of their value, as many fans felt outraged.

Macklemore stood his ground and pledged the $1m he had earned from his appearances to six organisations supporting Palestinians.

All of this has helped generate further donations and attention for Palestinian aid organisations, including a $1m pledge from children’s educator Ms Rachel.

An attempt to push “Free Palestine” off the stage resulted in Palestine receiving vastly more attention, artists abandoning one of the world’s biggest tours and more funds being donated to Palestinian organisations.

The attempt to control the message amplified the message itself.

Amid its genocide in Gaza, Israel is facing a crisis not simply of public opinion, but of narrative control.

The old narrative increasingly struggles against a force Israel cannot easily control: people can see what is happening themselves.

There are limits to propaganda when people can witness the consequences of power for themselves. Public opinion increasingly reflects that rupture."

This is why it's SO IMPORTANT to keep sharing news and getting the word out on what's going on. Cumulative People Power is what's going to win this.

"Al Jazeera Media Network condemns the deliberate killing of its Al Jazeera Mubasher Channel’s cameraman Ahmed Washah by Israeli occupation forces today, Saturday, June 20, in an Israeli bombardment that targeted a house in the Bureij camp in the central Gaza Strip.

This heinous crime comes only two months after Israeli forces killed his brother and colleague Mohammed Washah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher. Ahmed is the 12th Al Jazeera martyr in Gaza since October 2023.

The Network denounces the continuation of these crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces against its correspondents and staff in Gaza, and renews its call on the international community and legal institutions to take urgent, practical measures to hold the Israeli officials involved in these appalling crimes accountable, and to adopt deterrent mechanisms to end the targeting of journalists.

Al Jazeera affirms its determination to take every available legal measure to prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes, while committing to continue covering events in the Gaza Strip despite the occupation army’s attempts to silence the voice of truth and its ongoing targeting of the journalists and cameramen working with Al Jazeera."

"Sexual violence and deliberate harassment have become increasingly common in the occupied West Bank, perpetrated by Israeli soldiers and settlers. According to observers, these acts are no longer isolated incidents but rather systematic tools used by Israel to pressure Palestinians and force them to leave their homes.

On March 13, in the middle of the night, more than 70 settlers attacked Khirbet Hamsa al-Fawqa.

Qusay told Al Jazeera that the settlers divided themselves into groups to attack the Palestinian tents. Five of the settlers attacked his tent – where he had been asleep – and began beating him severely with their hands and sticks. They also assaulted two foreign female activists who were sleeping in the same tent.

“The settlers then forcibly removed my pants while tying my hands and feet, binding my body with my belt, and stripping me of my underwear,” Qusay said. He recounted that the settlers then beat his genitals, tied his limbs and genitals with plastic zip ties, and humiliated him, before threatening to repeat the assault if he did not leave the area.

The assault on Qusay and all the residents of the area lasted for approximately 45 minutes. During that time, many residents, including children, reported being beaten, and said they were threatened with death if they didn’t leave immediately. The settlers also stole hundreds of livestock.

At the end of the assault, Qusay said that the settlers dragged him along the ground without his underwear and severely beat him all over his body, including his eye, which later became swollen."

"Spotlight reporter Liam Bartlett, who a decade ago spent two years working for Shell, reported from the Shabara mine in Congo’s Kolwezi region.

“Almost 80% of the world’s cobalt is mined in places like this,” said Bartlett, claiming cobalt was the mineral behind every battery – from electric vehicles to home batteries and the “monster” batteries being installed across Australia to store renewable energy.

.. but there were two big problems with Spotlight’s attempt to link every battery to these appalling conditions.

According to an industry group representing companies that produce cobalt, about 99% of the mineral is gathered as a by-product of mining other minerals, chiefly nickel and copper.

Spotlight focused on batteries for renewable energy, but about a third of all cobalt is used in laptops and smartphones. Other uses include jet engines, medical implants, car tyres and pigments.

A Seven spokesperson said “some estimates put the percentage of cobalt mined in artisanal mines at 30%” and that this ore was mixed with cobalt from industrial mines.

Second, there’s a problem with Bartlett’s claim that cobalt is in every battery.

“That’s not true,” says Prof Neeraj Sharma, a battery technology expert at the University of New South Wales.

Sharma says battery manufacturers have been moving away from using cobalt because it is toxic, expensive and “ethically fraught”.

Sharma says many electric vehicle companies and large battery manufacturers now use cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. He says last year about half of EV batteries and 90% of home and grid-scale batteries used cobalt-free technology.

None of this crucial context was presented to Spotlight’s viewers.

A Seven spokesperson said battery technology was evolving and was “essential to our renewable future” but did not say why this hadn’t been explained in the program.

Prof Susan Park, a renewables governance expert at the University of Sydney who reviewed the segment, says artisanal workers are in the region “because of extreme poverty”. To blame China for the abuses – as Bartlett did – “denies the agency of the Congolese government”, and the problem existed “well before Chinese companies became involved in cobalt”, she says."

Yikes, boiling here too for the next week+... What I do when it's unbearable at night is wet the top sheet down thoroughly and sleep under that with a fan pointed at the bed, cools it right down until it evaporates after 25mins or so but gives you time to get to sleep 👍
