Pensioners in receipt of the Basic State Pension still receive lower income in real terms when compared to average earnings. The LibDems Pension Triple Lock was designed to close the gap that was created when snatcher Thatcher broke the annual pension rise link to earnings in 1980. It was working until other Tories fiddled with the scheme. Even the much vaunted 'New State Pension' has not achieved parity with the 1980 level.
