Picture a mailbox with a glass front on a busy street. Every neighbor who walks past can see what lands inside: the electric bill, the letter from the bank, the envelope from the clinic, the notice about a parking ticket.

Nobody opened your mail and nobody broke a law. Still, by Friday the whole block knows more about your life than your cousins do.

Now say the post office offers a fix. For an extra fee each month, you can rent a box with a wooden door. Sounds fair. Watch what happens next. The few people who pay for the wooden door stand out. Neighbors start to wonder what they are hiding. The privacy you paid for now makes you look guilty.

That is the trouble with financial privacy sold as an add-on. Financial privacy means the details of what you earn, spend and save stay between you and the people you choose to deal with. When it is optional, using it marks you. When it is the default, it covers the nurse, the shop owner and the retiree the same way, and nobody stands out for having it.

Here is the fair counterargument. Fraud is real and scams are real. Police and tax offices need a way to follow money when a crime happens, and a system that hides everything from everyone could protect the wrong people. I take that seriously. The tool most free countries already use for mail and for homes is a warrant: a judge signs off on looking at one person for one reason. A warrant opens one door for one case, and the rest of the street keeps its doors.

How I would know I am wrong: if places where private payments are normal show clearly more fraud than places where every payment is watched, with no gain in freedom for ordinary people, the case gets weaker.

Bitcoin is a useful test here. Its ledger, the shared record of every payment, is public by design, so anyone can read it. Privacy on Bitcoin takes some work, like using a fresh address for each payment and running your own copy of the software, called a node, so you are not asking a stranger to look up your coins for you.

I've held bitcoin since 2015. I would rather every house on the street got a wooden door for free.

I ran a node in 2015 holding a rounding error of a stack, because I wanted to watch the thing work for myself. Miners follow the fee market rather than the holder count, which is why hashrate kept climbing through the quiet years. If new holders stop arriving, I think it shows up in fees long before it shows up in nodes.

Picture the pharmacy counter on a busy Saturday. The clerk reads the name of your prescription out loud, and six people in line behind you hear it. Nobody did anything wrong. You still feel exposed, because that one word says something about your life you did not choose to share.

Your payment history works the same way, except the line behind you never goes home.

Some background first. Every time you pay with a card or an app, a record is made: who you paid, how much, when, and often where. Banks keep those records for years. Rules in many countries tell banks to watch for unusual patterns and report them. That watching is called transaction monitoring. Most of us never voted on how much of it there should be. It grew one rule and one reporting limit at a time.

A year of those records can tell a stranger a lot. A monthly payment to a counselor. A visit to a fertility clinic. A retainer paid to a divorce lawyer. A donation to a cause your boss dislikes. Each one is legal. Together they read like a diary you never meant to write.

My claim is this. Privacy in payments is not about hiding from the rules. It protects you from two specific harms. The first is being cut off from your own money without a hearing, because a pattern looked odd to a computer. The second is surveillance that runs backward: records kept forever and searched later, by people and for reasons that did not exist on the day you paid.

There is a serious case against me. Monitoring catches real crime. It has helped stop trafficking, fraud and money moving around sanctions. People who break the law do use privacy tools, often more than anyone else.

So I will tell you what would change my mind. Show me that broad monitoring catches crime in proportion to what it costs and how many ordinary people it sweeps in. Then show me that someone who gets cut off by mistake has a fast, real way back in. If both were true, I would worry a lot less.

I have been mining Bitcoin since 2015, and this side of it matters to me. Bitcoin is not perfectly private, since its ledger is public. But nobody can freeze your keys or close your account without a hearing, and you decide what you share and with whom. That is the same courtesy we want at the pharmacy counter: tell the people who need to know, and keep your voice down for everyone else.

On the day you opened the box, it was the fastest thing on your desk. Today the fan runs loud, a few programs take forever to open, and nobody would pay you much for it. And it lost that value whether you used it or not. A laptop left in a drawer gets older just as fast as one that ships work every day.

So I would put a machine like that to work now, while it still has its edge.

That is how I think about the cost of keeping Bitcoin safe. The people who guard the ledger are called miners. A miner runs a mining machine, a computer built to do one job: race to add the next page of transactions and earn new coins for it. Two bills come with that machine. The power company wants dollars every month. And the machine itself loses value fast, because a newer, faster model is always on the way.

Here is my claim. Both bills help the network. A machine that loses value punishes the owner who waits, so miners keep running. The power bill is due in local money, so a steady share of the new coins gets sold to people who did not hold any. Every day, fresh bitcoin moves from the people who made it to someone new.

Now the strong case against me. Large operators with cheap power deals and first pick of the newest machines win most of the race. A person with one machine at home earns crumbs. You could say all that wear and all those bills protect a small professional industry, and the idea that anyone can join is mostly a story.

I take that seriously. Here is how I would know I am wrong. If small and home miners keep losing their share of the new coins for several cycles in a row, and the numbers only work at giant sites, then the costs have built a club with a locked door.

For now I watch the machines age and the coins move. A machine that wears out cannot sit in a drawer and wait for a better day. To me that is part of the security. The decay keeps the guards working, and it keeps the coins spreading out.

picture someone saving to leave a house where another person reads every bank statement.

she moves forty dollars a week into a jar. she pays cash at the pharmacy because a card charge would show up. she is planning a move that only works if it stays secret until the day she leaves.

she is breaking no rule. she is trying to stay safe.

i think about her whenever someone says privacy in money is only for people with something to hide.

financial privacy means the details of your payments, who you paid, how much and when, stay between you and the people involved unless there is a real reason to look. it still lives inside the law. the difference is that nobody gets to watch by default.

over the last few decades payment monitoring grew through reporting thresholds and screening rules. a reporting threshold is a dollar line where a bank has to file a report about you, often without telling you. no single vote turned this on. it piled up, and the records it creates are permanent and searchable.

that pile lands hardest on people like her. a journalist protecting a source has the same problem. so does a shop owner who gets cut off by a bank and never hears why.

the pushback is serious. transaction monitoring catches real crime. it has slowed trafficking, sanctions dodging and fraud, and privacy tools have been used heavily by the exact people the rules aim at. i take that seriously, and i would never tell anyone to skip a legal report.

so the question i ask is about proportion. does watching everyone produce results that match its cost? and when someone gets shut out by mistake, can they get back in?

what would show me wrong: clear evidence that broad monitoring stops crime in proportion to everything it collects, plus a working appeal for people removed from banking without a hearing. if both showed up, i would change my mind.

bitcoin has limits here. every transaction sits on a public record, and addresses can be traced. what it offers is a way to hold savings that no bank can freeze, as long as you keep your own keys, the secret code that controls your coins, and take some care with how you use addresses. for the person saving in a jar, that is a way out she controls.
