I've no choice but to use Chrome for work on my self-supplied PC, but I'm currently trying:

- Delete weights.bin
- Create an empty file with the same name
- Set its file attributes to read-only, and system to hopefully make it impossible for Google's weights file to replace it when Chrome tries to redownload it.

Fingers crossed. If that doesn't work, I'll see if the hidden attribute works any better than the system attribute.

2026-03-24T17:10:38Z

If you want really weird, King Camp Gillette (of razor blade fame) wrote an 1894 book called The Human Drift, which is a utopian vision of a megacity built around Niagara Falls.

It's got no narrative, but it's completely fictional in that none of its proposals happened -- it being megalomanical techo-utopianism which looks dystopian to the far future year of 2026.

An interesting new research paper suggesting that life could be supported by high-energy radiation knocking free electrons loose from ice from planets or moons with any liquid water and ice near the surface (e.g., Mars, Europa, and Enceladus).

It's purely theoretical, but opens up unexplored possibilities for science fiction stories.

With the exception of Milton Rosen's "The Viking Rocket Story" from 1956, I've found quite a few primary sources online. And the Rosen book showed up relatively cheaply on Amazon, so that's on its way.

(I've had that book on my wish list for years with no results, but the appearance of a used copy yesterday made me pull the trigger on this project after thinking about it for a few months).

I began work on a new book, a history of events from 1945-57—basically between the V-2 and Sputnik. This is mostly missiles, but Korolev and von Braun were angling for spaceflight even if they didn't have official approval.

So far topics will be:

Operation Backfire
The World-Circling Spaceship
Hermes Program @ White Sands
Viking Rocket
Project Orion
German work in the USSR (G-1)
Development of the R1, R-2, R-3 and R-5
Development of the R-7 Semyorka
The R-12
Blue Streak

Artist Grant Lathe worked for Marshall Space Flight Center from 1960 onward and was often given the assignment for more "artistic" NASA art. With the 5- (or even 6!) legged conical LEM and fancy racing livery on the CSM I have to figure this painting is from very early in the LOR period, possibly while it was still being debated. Call it about mid-1961.

I'm quite pleased that the red-and-white checks remind me of Tintin's Destination Moon rocket.

An air-dropped shuttle proposal.

The AMSC (Advanced Military Spaceflight Capability) was worked up in the 80s by Rockwell International. This one is the subsonic launch version, which would take its orbiter up to 30,000 feet (9100m) and Mach 0.7 before releasing it. There was also a supersonic version which would carry roughly the same orbiter in its belly—that's the last image here.

Unfortunately I can't make out the artist's name for the first picture, the painting.
