The camera showed faint aurora activity as soon as twilight ended, very low elevation. I set up the camera take exposures as I slept. This was the best one at 10:49PM local time (Mountain Daylight).

The young crescent moon occulted Mercury today...as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico.

First photo is a telephoto shot of the moon only a minute after it uncovered our innermost planet. This was taken in bright twilight as a wind and dust storm was easing up.

Second photo is a wider angle shot ten minutes later that includes Venus in the bottom third of the frame. The evening twilight sky colors are pallid because of the dust storm clouds billowing a mile below me on the floor of the Tularosa basin.

Winter storm - destruction of a forest.

Dense wet snow has been falling for over 24 hours. Widespread power outages on the highest terrain continue and will probably continue through the night and into tomorrow.

In these photos we see a tall, beautiful, proud Douglas fir that has lost multiple branches because of the extreme load of the wet snow that sticks to the branches.

The second photo is a close-up that more easily shows the broken branches and the exposed inner wood.

This is the Sacramento mountains in the Lincoln National Forest in Southern New Mexico, about 10 miles east of Alamogordo.

The first photo was taken in bright twilight with the sun about 7 degrees below the horizon. The sky has a strong band of orange light just above the distant trees.

The second photo was taken in faint twilight, so you can now see earthshine on the moon's disk. (The sun was about 11 degrees below the horizon.) Most of the orange band has faded and lowered. We are entering the blue hour.

This is a stack of 193 15-second images. Software subtracted the bright moonlit sky background and 'flattened' away various gradients from lens vignetting and varying sky brightness because I'm imaging close to the horizon.

Imagine trying to do this in the days of emulsion and chemicals? I love electronic imaging for astrophotography.

Last night the high terrain of the mountains scraped some frozen precipitation out of passing clouds in the form of graupel (spongy hail). (There was absolutely no forecast for precipitation last night, but the mountains had other plans.)

Comet C/2025 A6 Lemmon in the evening sky, as seen in the mountains of southern New Mexico.

First photo was taken in twilight, so the sky is blue. This comet is not very bright, so the faint extensions of the tail are easily washed out by twilight (or light pollution).

Second photo is a slightly wider view, taken in full night. The tail extends at least seven degrees. The sky background is mottled and banded. That's because bands of (mostly green) airglow were drifting across the sky.

The third photo shows the appearance of the second photo before I took steps to try and smooth the sky background. With contrast set high, not only was the sky covered with bands of lighter and darker sections of sky...but they were different colors as well.

The fourth photo shows where I placed sample areas across the frame so that image processing software could analyze, model, and correct the irregularities in the sky. Considering what I started with, my final result is pretty good.

This image was taken with a 400mm lens. 88 15-second exposures were stacked for the first image, aligned on the comet.

The second image is a stack of just four exposures to better show the surrounding star field. The nebulosity Messier 16 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Nebula ) is above the comet.

The third graphic is a finder chart from planetarium software.

Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) in the morning sky, just before twilight starts.

The camera was on a fixed tripod, no tracking, short telephoto lenses. 30 images were taken, then stacked with software.

This comet is faint to the naked eye, pretty in binoculars, and it's only seen in the northern hemisphere.

Note that in the first photo, if you zoom in close, some of the stars are elliptical smudges. Those are galaxies, tens of millions of light years away.

If you don't want to get up at 5:30 am, wait a day or two and it'll be visible low in the northwest in the evening sky, getting higher and moving south day by day.

If you can get away from bright city lights, this comet is bright enough that even a cell phone (especially propped on a stationary object) can get decent photos.

I have a question about mapping tools that can help with local activism/organizing/campaigns.

I am currently using Google Maps to plot individuals at various addresses. (Easy to import data to the map, I can share this with others, etc.)

But there is a problem. If there are multiple individuals with the same address, Google Maps only puts one pin at a given address...and no additional symbology/color to show you that more than one pin is plotted...even if you hover over it or click on it...only the top pin is shown.

What other mapping tools (that I can easily share with others) can properly display multiple pins at a given address?

(This question also opens the door to other features...can field operatives make updates in real time and share to a central data source/server?...and more and more.)

As always, for grass-roots stuff...free is best, lowest cost is next best.

The single seat glider I am building is a far cry from a Boeing 787, but there are still some commonalities. I have switches of various types that control different aspects of the glider's operation.

This video shows three switches on my instrument panel. The master switch is entirely unguarded, and a casual bump or incorrect movement can flip the switch. The next two switches have different types of guards. The second switch requires you to pull back on the switch to get over a mechanical bar that prevents accidental flipping. The third switch is entirely covered with a bright red guard that must be first lifted before you can access the switch. Now that I think of it, I may want to add some sort of guard to the (first) master switch because it turns on and off all electrical systems.

I rolled the glider fuselage on its side so that I could easily blow/suck out all the dust and debris from various compartments. High pressure air gets the debris in motion and the shop vac hose sucks up the mess.

(When was the last time you saw this done to a Cessna or Piper?)

Remember the last time you went to zero G or even negative G in a small plane? All the debris on the floor was suddenly floating around in the cockpit. I want to keep that to a minimum. And I'm on patrol with a flashlight, magnet on a stick, grabber on a stick...looking for errant nuts, washers, etc. I don't want that stuff to surprise me later by interfering in the motion of flight controls.

After I get the fuselage right-side-up, I'll add fluid to the wheel brake and bleed out the air bubbles.

V572 Velorum might be naked eye visible if you have good eyes, are in a dark sky...although the first quarter moon may thwart that.

It should be easy in binoculars or a camera on a fixed tripod. A newer cellphone camera might also capture it.

The attached graphic shows the location of the nova as seen from Wellington as evening twilight ends...fairly high in the southwest.

This evening the sun had just set before the moon rose, so the terrain is not well illuminated. This makes the full moon the brightest object in the frame. Because the moon is near the horizon, we are looking at it through lots of atmosphere. This colors it orange/pink.

A diffuse band of cirrus is above the moon and it shows a slight hint of sunset orange.

Evening twilight shows the bright stars of the winter constellations setting in the west. Two 'guests' are also in the frame...the moon (grossly overexposed), and Jupiter below it.

Cirrus clouds are moving in from the west, but only block the brightest parts of the twilight sky near the horizon.

The lights of La Luz shine at the bottom of the frame, right of center.

This is a wide angle image (APS-C sensor, 12mm lens), taken on a fixed tripod.

I took a series of images that started in bright twilight and continued to full night. I chose this image because it didn't show too many stars (easier to identify constellations), yet it was mixed with a nice gradient of twilight that was fairly bright near the horizon (with touches of orange and yellow) and rather dark up high.

The one-day old crescent moon and the Pleiades in evening twilight as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico.

Each photo is about ten minutes later than the previous one. As twilight fades, the saturated sky colors soften and more stars become visible.

I chose to frame each shot so that the horizon was visible. I like the earthly context it adds, and in the final shot, with the moon getting close to the horizon...I was able to include the lights of La Luz.

Yet another dust storm over the southeast half of New Mexico, far west Texas, the Texas panhandle, Oklahoma panhandle, extending into Colorado and Kansas.

The dust is coming from prehistoric lake beds in northern Chihuahua, Mexico:

With the severe drought conditions in this region, it takes far weaker winds to create these dust storms compared to previous decades. Visibility at my house is less than 1/2 mile.

Blue satellite?

I captured these images last night while my cameras were on patrol for Lyrids meteors.

They appear to show a blue satellite trail around 9:19PM Mountain Daylight Time, as seen from the Sacramento mountains of southern New Mexico.

Note that camera's color balance was set to 'daylight' and in the first image another, fainter, satellite trail is also visible...it's not blue, it's a typical color. Also note star colors. This camera over the years has shown itself to be accurate in rendering color in night/day photos.

Have others seen this before?

Sony a6300 camera, 23mm lens at f/1.4, ISO 800, 30 second exposures, using intervalometer with 31-second timing. Camera pointed near zenith. (Note that this lens, at f/1.4, shows stars with coma and astigmatism in the corners of the frame...so the stars look as if they have wings/tails.)

It appears the plane landed in a slight right bank, so the right main gear bore the load of the hard landing.

The landing gear probably failed/collapsed/sheared right away.

But was it really that hard of a landing?...so much so...that the right wing spar failed when the wing hit the runway...and the right wing tore away? (After that, the plane was still moving fast and the left wing producing lift...so over it went)

I will be interested to hear about analysis of the right wing spar failure. That may take months or years.

Making a fiberglass wingtip wheel for the glider wing.

1st photo - making the mold/form out of foam, with a 60mm diameter inline skate wheel in place. Note that the underside of the wing is covered with clear tape to protect it from epoxy when I lay up 7 plies of glass.

2nd photo - making the fabric template. A single piece of glass fabric (weave 7725 because it drapes so well over various curves and corners) will make the final part, but there will be an overlap along the trailing edge. I draped a piece of plastic over the foam form after it was hot-glued to the wing and then traced out the pattern, with some reference marks such as a center line.

3rd - Demolding the cured part by squeezing it so that it flexes/distorts a bit...and the epoxy at the base easily shears off from the waxed clear tape. (No need for hammer and wedges.)

4th - rough sanded final part.

The waning crescent moon was next to Antares in Scorpio this morning before sunrise. Mercury rose to the left of that pair. Other stars of Scorpio were sprinkled across the frame of the first photo.

The other photos are closer telephoto views of the moon and Antares as twilight got brighter.

The brightest 'star' in these photos is the planet Jupiter. You'll also see Orion rising, the Hyades, Cassiopeia, and other constellations.
