i use nextdns because it's easy to configure and handles multiple profiles (i use a more locked-down profile than what i enforce on the broad network).

would pi-hole on raspberry pi handle this simple use case? it would never break even ever, because nextdns is cheap and a pi no longer is.

but it would remove one remote point of failure. though i still need vanilla dns resolution, i could have redundant services for it, whereas currently nextdns going out takes me down

i pulled out my tactical flashlight (this was a disaster prep event) and aimed it at the drone. it moved. not because i have any illusion of having done real damage, but because it was there to video and it couldn't see

it flew off for a few minutes and came back. i put the tactical on **blinky** and aimed. it left and didn't come back

i personally felt annoyed that wayland was forced on me without care for breakage, but it's so much worse for digital artists. especially those with a conscience like david. my vmware with no clipboard and slack-that-works-only-from-pwned-aur are nothing compared to what artists must endure

i help an org with a hosted wordpress setup. one of our board members needed to give some big files to someone and putting them in wordpress seemed like a safe and easy way to do it. i wouldn't have had any reason to think there would be a problem either.

some time later, a couple of people went to work in an area that's handled by a heavy pig of a plugin. the site fell over, out of memory and thrashing.

i don't believe the files were being downloaded at that moment. but deleting them put the site back to normal. i don't see any evidence of disk quotas, but i don't know all the ways to check for that in ubuntu.

why could big-ass files knock a site over, and why could deleting them fix it immediately ?

my worry is theoretical because this isn't my area, but once ...
