Phone numbers were invented in 1879 so a switchboard operator could find you. Your agent will never have one. It has a key. On White Noise, so do you.

Some cool history here: https://www.inventionandtech.com/content/your-evolving-phone-number-1

A Rust bridge uses a single Marmot identity to route prompts, final replies, and agent status updates between your phone and your running sessions.

The current release runs on Linux, with structured final replies supported for OpenCode.

One-prompt installation instructions for your agent at the top of the README.

https://github.com/tidley/codr

Translate a message without it leaving your phone. See a link before you open it. Send a 512 MB video.

New White Noise for iOS and Android, out today. What's in it:

quoting
naddr1qv…0ljh

Two updates, one for iOS and one for Android. They don't do the same things this time, so here they are side by side.

On iOS

\
Links get a preview, if you want one. It's off until you turn it on in Appearance, because loading a preview means your phone fetches it from the linked site, and that site sees your IP address.

GIFs play. They used to arrive as stills.

Signing in walks you through it now: what the app is checking, what to do when a step needs you, and a Try Again if it can't refresh your account.

Report and Block are in the message menu. A report to White Noise carries the key you're reporting and the reason. Never the message.

On Android

Documents and videos go up to 512 MB now, and you can watch them go: bytes sent on the way out, a progress ring with Cancel and Retry on the way in.

Messages can be translated on your phone. Tap Translate in the message menu, or turn it on for a whole chat. It works through the Offline Translator app, so nothing goes to a translation server.

Then make it yours. Pick what a swipe does, pin a chat to your home screen, give each person their own notification sound.

On both

Catching up on a busy group after a day away went from minutes to seconds, and it no longer leaves old messages unreadable. A message you sent no longer shows as failed when everyone else already has it.\

They don't know that it is a Marmot event, and they also don't know that it came from you.

Even further, if your or my nsec were to leak, then that would still not reveal who invited me to a chat.

A relay operator, however, could with some sophisticated trickery try to link your and my IP address to the same group ID in the connection to it. I'm not exactly sure how to pull that off, but it might be possible.

      Release day. Update's out:

quoting
naddr1qv…9qlq

Group polls and better message sending

Group polls are here on iOS and Android. Today's White Noise release also improves message sending and makes larger group conversations work better, with more control over everyday chatting on each platform.

Ask the group

Open the attachment menu in a group chat and choose Poll. Add your question and answers, then let people pick one answer or several. Votes and results update inside the conversation, and people can change their choice while the poll is open.

An optional closing time gives everyone a deadline. After it passes, the results stay visible. Polls live inside your encrypted group chats and work across iOS and Android.

Sending and catching up

We've worked on the send process and group recovery, with particular attention to keeping larger groups usable as activity grows. Both apps use the updated Marmot messaging engine, bringing that shared work to iOS and Android together.

Edits made while a message is still sending now survive its confirmation. On Android, we've fixed interruptions to pending messages and made sending with Amber more reliable.

Chat recovery is better, and the apps now tell you when some history may be missing. Scrolling through older conversations is smoother, with better handling of messages arriving while you read.

More control on Android

Set a default disappearing-message timer for each profile under Settings > Privacy & Security. Chats and groups you create start with that timer; existing conversations keep their current settings. You can still change the timer for an individual chat.

Dictation now gives you a choice for each recording: Paste puts your words into the draft for editing, while Send submits the message. We've also improved dictation setup and its controls.

Profile and group photos get a crop preview so you can choose what appears in the frame. GIFs sent from iOS animate on Android, too. Sharing supports more kinds of documents, and downloads you start keep running when you leave the conversation.

You can delete chat folders and use Wave hi to welcome a new group member. Notification and push-recovery fixes are included as well.

Easier photo sharing on iOS

Photos and videos begin uploading while you write your message, with an indicator on each attachment. That gives uploads a head start before you tap Send.

Tap a profile or group photo to open it full-screen and zoom in. In a conversation, swipe between photos in the viewer or tap a sender's avatar to open their profile. A link menu now lets you copy a link directly.

We've fixed QR scanning and photo-selection issues, along with a sign-in crash involving password autofill. Chat previews now show the type and number of attachments, making photo-only messages easier to recognize.

Get the update

Thanks to Jeff Gardner, Pepi, Danny Morabito, Mubarak Auwal, Vladimir Krstic, Datawav, Max and Laura for the work. Friends and family testing the apps have helped us find bugs in daily use. Keep the reports coming as we continue with frequent releases.

We're back

We're back with native White Noise apps for iOS and Android. Groups are far more reliable: messages catch up after time offline, and devices with the same verified group history stay in the same group even when changes arrive in a different order.

The everyday parts of chat are here too: replies, reactions, mentions, encrypted media, multiple accounts, shareable profiles and invites, and group controls. This release is steadier and ready for real conversations.

Highlights on iOS and Android

Android now has voice dictation and Read Aloud, along with quick account switching, an AMOLED appearance, and QR cards for profiles and invites. Group controls are available directly from a person's profile.

On iOS, you can protect the app with Face ID and block screenshots. Push notifications are designed to keep conversation details private: Apple receives a generic wake, while the sender, group, message ID, and message text stay off its notification service. Your phone builds the visible notification locally.

Both apps make it easier to move between identities, share your profile, invite someone to a group, and keep a conversation moving without giving White Noise a phone number or email address.

Why it took a while

We haven't shipped a release in several months because we rebuilt both apps and the shared core underneath them. It was a large refactor, and it gave us the chance to fix the parts that had become difficult to trust or maintain.

The result is a much more stable foundation. We have tested groups substantially, including offline catch-up and overlapping group changes. Devices with the same authenticated history now converge on the same valid group state. In plain English: the group stays together, and people get the messages waiting for them when they return.

The rebuild also changes what happens next. Fixes and features can now move into both apps without another long rewrite standing in the way.

Why Marmot

White Noise runs on Marmot, an open messaging protocol built for private, decentralized conversations.

Your identity is a keypair you control. It works across Nostr, with no phone number or email account required. Groups use end-to-end MLS encryption, which protects older messages if a current key is exposed and restores protection for new messages after a compromised device is removed and the group advances.

Relays are replaceable, and you can run your own. No single service owns your account or your conversations. The protocol and apps are open source, so anyone can inspect how they work.

A first look for Nostr

This release is a sneak peek for our friends on Nostr. We aren't posting it on Twitter. For now, iOS is available through TestFlight and Android through Zapstore.

App Store review is a massive pain. We would rather put the release in your hands now than wait for a listing.

Thank you to the friends and family who have spent the last several weeks testing real group chats with us. Your reports helped us find and fix a long list of bugs before this release.

If something breaks, tell us through support inside the app. Keep the reports coming and we'll fix issues as quickly as we can.

The rebuild is done. Get ready for frequent releases.

A lot changed in this release. Messages arrive instantly. Group chats are stable. We improved image sharing. Amber support. Keys only, no phone number.

quoting
naddr1qv…hva8

We shipped v0.3.0 one week ago and said nothing about it. Within hours of release we found bugs that caused messages to vanish from group chats to some users. Announcing a messenger that loses messages felt wrong, so we went quiet and fixed it instead. v2026.3.5 is the result: everything new from v0.3.0, with the reliability problems solved.

For anyone coming from an older version, this is a large update. New encryption under the hood, real-time message delivery, image sharing, group chats, Amber support, and a long list of improvements that make the app feel like a different product. Here is what changed and why:

Upgrading

If you are coming from v0.3.0, the upgrade is simple. Your existing groups stay intact, but the encryption method for new group messages has changed. Group members who have not yet upgraded to v2026.3.5 will not be able to read new messages or receive images until they update. Once everyone in a group is on v2026.3.5, everything works as expected.

If you are coming from an older version (v0.2.x or earlier), this upgrade requires a one-time reset of all local data. Messages, images, group memberships, and settings will be erased when you open the new version. The reason: the Marmot protocol changed how it manages encryption state for groups, and we moved the local database from unencrypted to fully encrypted storage. Least Authority's security audit confirmed encrypted storage as a priority, since a messenger built on privacy should not store conversations in plaintext on disk. Because the database library has no way to migrate between formats, a clean break was the only option that would not risk silent corruption.\
\
Before upgrading from v0.2.x, back up your nsec (your private key) if you have not already. After updating, log in with your existing keys or connect through Amber. Your profile information lives on Nostr relays, so it will sync back automatically when you sign in. Follow list persists on relays too. Groups from v0.2.x will need to be recreated, since the old encryption state cannot carry over.

The database and protocol structures now support proper migrations, so future updates will preserve your data regardless of which version you are coming from.

Amber and External Signers

For users who manage their Nostr keys through a dedicated signing app like Amber, White Noise previously required you to paste your private key directly into the app. That meant trusting the app with your most sensitive credential. With this release, White Noise connects to Amber and other external signers directly, so your private key never leaves the signer. The app asks the signer to authorize each action, and the key stays where it belongs.

QR code scanning accepts both private keys (nsec) and public keys (npub) without requiring you to know which format you are scanning. If you have been waiting for external signer support before trying White Noise, this is the release.

Messages That Arrived Late Now Arrive

The most consequential fix in this release is invisible. In v0.3.0, messages sent during the brief window between receiving a Welcome and subscribing to the group relay would vanish. Late-arriving messages from previous MLS epochs were permanently marked as failed because
max_past_epochs
was never wired into the OpenMLS configuration (it defaulted to zero).

Both problems are fixed. The Rust backend now gates catch-up on subscription readiness instead of a fixed sleep timer, and
max_past_epochs
defaults to 5. Messages that arrive slightly out of order or from a previous epoch now decrypt correctly. OpenMLS was bumped to 0.8.1, which includes a security fix for tag comparison (GHSA-8x3w-qj7j-gqhf).

Relay Handling That Does Not Strand Users

v0.3.0 had a blind spot: if a user's inbox relay list (kind 10050) was missing, giftwrap subscriptions would silently fail. The user could log in but never receive messages.

This release falls back to NIP-65 relays when inbox relay lists are absent ([whitenoise-rs#518](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/518>)). Login now blocks when any of the required relay lists (kinds 10002, 10050, 10051) are missing, preventing users from entering a broken state. Relay filter validation and semantic event selection were hardened. The
NostrManager::with_signer
path is now cancellation-safe. Subscriptions recover after external signer re-registration instead of going silent.

Message Delivery Status

Previous versions published messages with no feedback. The app fired events at relays and moved on. If relays rejected or never acknowledged the message, the sender had no way to know.

Publishing is now tracked end-to-end. Messages appear immediately with a
Sending
status, transition to
Sent(N relays)
after relay acknowledgment, or
Failed(reason)
after three automatic retries with exponential backoff (2s, 4s). The Rust backend streams status updates through flutter_rust_bridge, and the Flutter UI renders them as sending, sent or failed on each outgoing bubble ([whitenoise-rs#519](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/519>), [whitenoise#425](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise/pull/425>)). Tap a failed message to retry manually. Retried messages reposition to the end of the chat list.

Delivery status persists across app restarts and survives relay echo reprocessing without regressing to stale state ([whitenoise-rs#559](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/559>), [whitenoise-rs#556](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/556>)).

MIP-04: Encrypted Media

MIP-04 defines how Marmot clients encrypt files for upload and decrypt them after download. The encryption key derives from the MLS group secret via HKDF-Expand, so only group members can access shared media. File metadata (MIME type, dimensions, blurhash) travels as an IMETA tag inside the encrypted MLS message.

The MDK exposes MIP-04 through UniFFI bindings for Kotlin, Swift, Python, and Ruby ([mdk#215](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/mdk/pull/215>)). The HKDF key derivation was corrected to use expand-only semantics with the exporter secret as PRK, matching the specification exactly ([mdk#217](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/mdk/pull/217>)). The TypeScript SDK implements MIP-04 natively with a
GroupMediaStore
, IMETA tag parsing, and event-driven media caching ([marmot-ts#55](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/marmot-ts/pull/55>)).

Replies That Work Like Replies

Swipe-to-reply, auto-focus on the input field, and author-colored quote previews make replies feel like a natural part of conversation instead of an afterthought ([whitenoise#389](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise/pull/389>)). Tapping a reply scrolls to the original message. The reply context preserves media attachments in the quote.

Media Previews in Chat List

Conversations with image-only messages no longer show empty previews. The chat list displays an attachment indicator so you can tell what happened without opening the conversation ([whitenoise#414](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise/pull/414>)).

Group Security Hardening

Key packages are now validated before adding members to a group. The backend checks kind, base64 payload, ciphersuite, required MLS extensions, and verifies the event pubkey matches the expected member ([whitenoise-rs#548](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/548>)). Admin-only mutations (add members, remove members, update group data) are enforced with fail-fast checks ([whitenoise-rs#547](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/547>)). Post-join self-update is temporarily disabled to prevent stale-state divergence risk ([whitenoise-rs#562](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/562>)).

UI Polish

Twenty-plus pull requests worth of visual fixes. The home screen layout was flattened with improved spacing for the hero image, slogan, and auth controls ([whitenoise#441](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise/pull/441>)). The signup bio field no longer gets cut off by the keyboard. The onboarding carousel text renders completely. The npub display uses block-based ellipsis instead of cutting mid-character. Relay input fields have a clear button. Error notices in the chat screen sit in the right position. Blurhash placeholders now match the dimensions of the loaded image instead of rendering at the wrong size. Disabled buttons are visible in both light and dark mode. The base design size matches the Figma source of truth.

Debug View

A new debug screen surfaces logs from the Rust backend directly in the app ([whitenoise#417](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise/pull/417>)). For developers and testers, this eliminates the need to connect to ADB or read logcat output to diagnose issues.

CI Pipeline

Tests now shard four ways with Rust test coverage included ([whitenoise#419](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise/pull/419>)). A 10-minute timeout prevents stuck jobs from blocking the queue. APK builds run on every pull request. The release builder and Zapstore asset pipeline shipped alongside v0.3.0 and continue to work for this release.

New Clients and Tools

whitenoise-rs CLI. A full CLI client and daemon that exposes the Rust backend directly from the command line ([whitenoise-rs#537](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/537>)). Commands cover identity management, accounts, groups, chats, messages, follows, users, profile, relays, settings, notifications, and streaming IPC. Includes end-to-end test suite.

wn-tui. A terminal client for White Noise, written in Rust. Unicode-safe input, auto-growing composer, reactions, follows management, a status bar with display name and invite count, and a profile screen with bech32 npub conversion. For people who live in the terminal and prefer it that way. ([wn-tui](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/wn-tui>))

We tested interoperability (including encrypted media) between the new Marmot typescript library with MDK apps using the pre-alpha Marmots web chat (and it worked!) <https://github.com/marmot-protocol/marmot-ts>

Dr. Marmot. A diagnostic tool that audits your Nostr identity for Marmot compatibility. Checks relay unification across kinds 10002, 10050, and 10051. Detects orphaned key packages. Prescribes fixes. Works on mobile. Has a personality layer called "Jeff mode" for when you want your diagnostics delivered as corporate wellness advice. ([dr.marmot](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/dr.marmot>))

Protocol

The Marmot specification updated three MIPs:

- MIP-01: Extension format v2 with QUIC varint encoding. Admin pubkeys changed from hex-encoded comma-separated strings to concatenated raw 32-byte x-only public keys.

- MIP-02: Clarified post-join self-update sequencing with a warning about stale-state divergence risk.

- MIP-03: NIP-44 replaced with ChaCha20-Poly1305 (described above). MIP-04 exporter label updated from
("nostr", "nostr")
to
("marmot", "encrypted-media")
.

SDKs

The MDK shipped three releases in this cycle. v0.6.0 added
clear_pending_commit
for recovering from publish failures, ratchet tree inspection with public keys, and proper
max_past_epochs
wiring. v0.7.0 exposed MIP-04 encrypted media through UniFFI bindings with
encrypt_media_for_upload
,
decrypt_media_from_download
,
create_media_imeta_tag
, and
parse_media_imeta_tag
([mdk#215](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/mdk/pull/215>)). v0.7.1 fixed MIP-04 file key derivation to use HKDF-Expand with the exporter secret as PRK ([mdk#217](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/mdk/pull/217>)).

A CI workflow now checks UniFFI binding coverage against the mdk-core public API surface on every pull request, using nightly rustdoc JSON to compare bound vs. unbound methods. Current coverage: 30/37 bindable methods (81.1%) ([mdk#212](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/mdk/pull/212>)).
\
All four language bindings (Python, Ruby, Kotlin, Swift) received automated updates tracking 14 core MDK releases in this period.

The TypeScript SDK added a
KeyPackageManager
class with
watchKeyPackages
and
markUsed()
tracking, typed domain errors replacing generic throws,
decryptGroupMessage
(renamed from
readGroupMessage
), debug logging via the
debug
package, and an anti-fork fix that prevents automatic self-update in
joinGroupFromWelcome
. MIP-04 support includes a
GroupMediaStore
with event-driven caching, IMETA tag helpers, and per-file encrypt/decrypt methods ([marmot-ts#55](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/marmot-ts/pull/55>)). The npm package was renamed from
@internet-privacy/marmots
to
@internet-privacy/marmot-ts
([marmot-ts#59](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/marmot-ts/pull/59>)).

Added

- Message delivery status: sending, sent (with relay count), failed (with reason) ([whitenoise-rs#519](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-rs/pull/519>), [whitenoise#425](<https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise/pull/425>))

Aaand... we’re back with the monthly recap 😎

December was a big month for us: two conference talks, some real face time as a team, and solid progress toward real-time messaging.

🎤 Conferences and Speaking

- @Btrust Dev Day 🚀 Josefina + Javier presented MIP-5: private mobile notifications without leaking metadata (reliable push, hidden social graph)

Watch the presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDxhY5p1yKQ&t=6360s

- Africa Bitcoin Conference: Max (nprofile…8npz) introduced Marmot and why MLS-based group encryption brings real group messaging to Nostr.

Interested? The talk is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2qKOw0xWVU&t=3280s

- jeffg (nprofile…dex9) also ran a two-hour hands-on workshop on building with Nostr and Marmot, unfortunately this was not recorded.

🏝️Team Gathering in Mauritius

With most of the team together for the conferences, we held a team meeting to discuss the streaming architecture work now underway.

Beyond the technical sessions, we answered questions from conference attendees curious about encrypted messaging on Nostr, met potential collaborators, and got to know each other better outside of GitHub and video calls.

👥 Community Call Highlights

The December community call (first Tuesday of each month, 1700 UTC) covered local WebSocket notifications and the battery and reliability tradeoffs for keeping connections alive on mobile.

We also did a deep dive on the privacy design decisions behind MIP-5.

🧩 The highlight was introducing Tubestr, the first non-chat Marmot client: Tubestr is a private video sharing app designed for kids to share their creations with a trusted circle only. Check it out at https://www.tubestr.app/

🔧Technical Progress

Real-Time Messaging Architecture

Until now, White Noise polled for new messages every 2 seconds in the foreground and every 30 seconds in the background.

This works, but it means messages never arrive instantly and background delivery feels sluggish.

The streaming architecture work underway will change this: messages arrive the moment they're sent.

This is early work that will roll out over several releases. The groundwork includes a new subscribe_to_group_messages API that delivers an initial snapshot plus live updates for new messages, reactions, and deletions.

On the Flutter side, a new ChatStreamProvider consumes the Rust SDK stream directly, handling sorting and member resolution.

We also added an enriched chat list API that returns summaries with latest message previews, and fixed message reordering loops by using stable sorting with createdAt plus message id as a tiebreaker.

📲 Android Platform Stability

Several fixes this month target real-world Android issues.

Notifications weren't arriving after device restart because the foreground service only initialized the Rust library without the full database configuration.

We created a WhitenoiseInitService that properly initializes the backend from both the foreground service and the main app, making it safe to call from either entry point.

We also fixed 🧼 data cleanup on uninstall so chats and profiles no longer persist after reinstalling, simplified the battery optimization permission flow to avoid stuck denial loops, and added graceful camera permission handling with an "Open Settings" link when access is denied.

💅 UI and UX Improvements

Chat bubbles now follow a standardized layout and dimension spec.

We added a new WarningBox widget used across profile screens to remind users that their profile information is public.

The media modal got fade animations and stable image positioning so the image no longer shifts when toggling overlays.

The language selector now correctly shows the system language on first load.

🦫 Marmot Protocol Spec

MIP-00 and MIP-02 now specify base64 encoding for KeyPackage and Welcome content instead of hex. This reduces payload size by roughly 33% and uses a tag-based encoding declaration.

This is a protocol hard fork, so readers must accept both formats during the transition period, but new implementations must write base64.

✏️ Marmot TypeScript SDK

The TypeScript SDK saw significant development this month with 9 merged PRs.

The main focus was building out the MarmotClient class as the primary interface for developers.

The proposals and commits flow is now implemented, allowing proper MLS group state management.

Group message reading now includes retry logic for handling unreadable messages gracefully.

Member addition and group membership methods were refactored into cleaner abstractions, and the SDK picked up base64 content encoding to match the spec change.

A new generic NostrNetworkInterface makes it easier to integrate with different Nostr implementations.

💻 MDK Language Bindings

MDK is now published to Rubygems and PyPI (as mdk-python), making it easier to integrate Marmot into Ruby and Python applications.

These join the existing Kotlin and Swift bindings, all generated via UniFFI from the core Rust crate.

💪 Security Audit

We're currently undergoing a security audit with Least Authority. This month several fixes landed based on their findings.

MDK now uses a v2 group image format with separate upload seed derivation, ensuring uploaded images use a derived keypair rather than the encryption key directly.

Migration tooling handles the transition from v1 to v2 automatically while maintaining backward compatibility.

🛠️ Expect more fixes and improvements in the coming months as the audit continues.

⏳ In Progress

A few notable PRs are still in flight.

The optimistic UI work will make messages and reactions appear instantly while syncing with the server.

NIP-55 support will enable integration with Amber and other external signers.

Media layout standardization will bring dynamic grid sizing that respects screen width constraints.

🌷 Ecosystem Growth

Several new projects have expressed interest in adding Marmot to their stack.

More to share as those conversations develop.

❤️ Contributors

Thanks to everyone who contributed this month: erskingardner, josefinalliende, hzrd149, gzuuus, untreu2, jgmontoya, codeswot, Quwaysim, ayushsaksena30, AbdulbasitSaid, mubarakcoded, dannym-arx, and kuba-04.

-

If you're building on Nostr and want to add encrypted messaging, check out the Marmot Protocol spec. https://x.com/whitenoisechat/status/2006075259406188550?s=46

If you want to contribute to the reference implementation, White Noise is open for PRs.

The next community call is the first Tuesday of January at 1700 UTC.

Privacy isn’t a crime fighting strategy. It’s a human right.

On Oct 14, EU governments are slated to vote on ‘Chat Control.’

The pitch is child protection. The reality is scanning everyone’s private messages and weakening end-to-end encryption.

679 scientists from 36 countries have signed an open letter explaining why this won’t work and will make us less safe.

Their bottom line:

- Large-scale CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) detection cannot reach acceptable accuracy. It’s easy to evade and floods systems with false positives.

- On-device scanning breaks E2EE by design, creating single points of failure and new targets for abuse.

- Expanding “mitigations” (AI filters, age checks) adds complexity and risk, not security.

(Find the full letter in the comments)

Why mass scanning is the wrong tool:

1. It flips the presumption of innocence. Treating every citizen like a suspect is not “safety”. It’s surveillance.

2. It’s the bedroom-camera problem. Putting spyware on every phone to catch a few criminals is like installing cameras in every bedroom to prevent murders. We all want to stop harm. Violating the privacy of millions of innocents isn’t the way.

3. Function creep is inevitable. Once the scanning pipeline exists, it can be re-tuned for politics, speech, and power. Borders shift, laws change. What’s legal here may be criminal elsewhere. Who draws the line next year?

4. You can’t “re-secure” leaked data. Privacy is protective armor, not a PR setting. Once stripped, it’s gone.

👁️ The cypherpunk lesson:

As Eric Hughes wrote, “Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age.”

Cypherpunks didn’t ask for permission. they wrote code so ordinary people could have the same defensive tech that institutions take for granted.

That’s not a niche hobby. It’s democratic hygiene.

🫶 Better ways to protect children (and everyone) :

Real protection doesn’t require blanket surveillance. It needs education, prevention, faster takedowns, resourced investigators (with warrants and due process), targeted operations (against offenders, not dragnet scans of the innocent).

These are exactly the pathways experts (and the UN) recommend: effective, proportionate, and rights-preserving.

💪 Build the free, private stack:

We already have tools that defend both safety and liberty without backdoors:

- Bitcoin for open, borderless payments.
- Nostr to own your identity and content.
- White Noise for truly private messaging: no phone numbers, no emails, end-to-end encryption with forward secrecy and post-compromise security.

This isn’t about ‘nothing to hide.’

It’s about the power to live, speak, organize, report, and dissent without pre-approval.

A controlled population is not a free population.

And a free society is the best long-term defense against abuse and corruption alike.
