Yup. Right there in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6), which is kind of the seminal text when it comes to summarizing the teachings of Jesus.

2026-07-13T17:24:31Z

Hi all! I have a special offer that I'm opening up. I'm a little short of where I'd like to be on funds, and I've had several people ask me about the colored-pencil style drawings I've done of Rhett.

So, I will be taking a bunch of artistic freedom orders for this style to test out whether it will be a viable addition to my regular commission offerings. These will be $60 each, and I intend to have them finished no later than *the end of next month* - that is, August 31 (so, much faster than my usual 3-4 month turnaround).

If you'd like one (or more!) of these, go ahead and fill out [this form](https://tally.so/r/vG1DQv ). Again, these are artistic freedom commissions: single character, hand me a ref, check a couple of boxes, and I handle the rest. The idea is for me to take a whole bunch of these and turn them around as quickly as I can :)

I am, of course, also open for regular commissions, so if you'd like something more specific and don't mind a longer wait, you can just fill out [my regular commission form](https://www.ursamajorartworks.com/commission-form ) instead :)

Tips for navigating in the United States without GPS:
If ...

2026-07-10T21:15:23Z

Tips for navigating in the United States without GPS:
If an interstate has an odd number (e.g. I-81), it's mostly or entirely a north-south route. If it has an even number (e.g. I-84), it's east-west.

If it's a two-digit number ending in a zero or five, it's a cross-country route (e.g I-90 runs from Boston, MA to Seattle, WA, and I-95 runs from the Maine-Canada border to Miami, FL).

The numbers generally increase from south to north (I-10 is south of I-40), and from west to east (I-85 is west of I-95).

If the number is three digits (instead of two) and begins with an even number (e.g. I-294 in Chicago, IL or I-495 in Boston, MA), it's a beltway (around a city).

If the number is three digits and begins with an odd number (e.g. I-581 in Roanoke, VA or I-384 in Hartford, CT), it's a spur (into a city).

Interstate exits are generally (but not always) numbered based on their mile marker - so, for example, if you know you're looking for Exit 58 and you just passed Exit 46, you know you've got about 12 miles to go until your exit.

Mile markers are also useful for knowing how far you are from the state line, since they reset at the western or southern border of where the interstate crosses the state line. So if, for example, you're headed south through North Carolina on Interstate 95 and you see Exit 33, you know you've got 33 miles to go until you reach the South Carolina line. (Just like the interstate numbers themselves, mile markers count up from south to north, and from west to east - and just as a note, this doesn't apply in California because they do things differently for... some reason.)

Interstate highways are usually extremely well-signed, so even if you don't know what exit number you're looking for, just pay attention to the signs! They'll usually tell you exactly what each exit goes to, and even which lane you need to be in for that exit.

Now, all of that applies to interstate highways specifically. The US Route system has a different numbering system that I'm not as familiar with, and each state also has its own state route system. This is why it's a good idea to look at a map before you take your trip so that you know which major roads you're going to be on, and don't underestimate the usefulness of keeping an up-to-date road atlas in the back seat of your car.

If you're British and visiting America, one way to think about our national highway system is that US Routes (marked by a white shield with black letters) are roughly the equivalent of your "A" roads, while Interstate Highways (marked by a blue-and-red shield with white letters) are more like your "M" roads. It's not an exact 1-to-1 comparison, but it's close. Bear in mind that each state also has its own road system, so numbered roads that are marked by other signs (they look different in every state) are usually state routes or sometimes even county roads, if you're in an especially rural area.

None of this is anything against GPS or Google Maps or anything like that - they're fantastic tools and I'm super glad that they exist, because they add a really great layer of convenience to taking trips (especially to unfamiliar places). I just know so many people who would be absolutely lost and helpless *without* those tools, and it doesn't have to be that way. We navigated in our road trips without real-time location data for a hundred years before that stuff was available, and our roads were built around finding our way without those modern conveniences - it's really good to know how to get around if, for whatever reason, you don't have access to live maps!

Simple tarot reading for those of you who want to try it but are ...

2026-05-24T17:00:54Z

Simple tarot reading for those of you who want to try it but are intimidated about remembering what all 78 cards represent:

First, the cards don't have special powers; they don't predict the future, they don't tell you what to do. They're tools to help you understand/organize your own thoughts. Like most elements of modern witchcraft, the tarot is about self-empowerment. Inside of you, there is a better version of yourself (the inner self or higher self). The thought behind tarot is that you are using imagery and symbolism of cards to understand what your higher self is trying to tell you. You may believe in some supernatural version of that, and that's fine. But it's absolutely not required.

Second, you don't need to memorize what every card means. Start by just looking at the illustrations on the cards and thinking about how they make you feel. Each card's art tells a story.

If you can't remember every card, remember what each *suit* represents:
Swords are intellect and reason.

Wands are passion and desire.

Cups are feelings and emotions.

Pentacles are resources and wealth/poverty.

The Major Arcana, (named cards like the Fool, the Tower, etc.) are parts of the Inner Self.

And if you really WANT to know each card, make a cheat sheet! Your deck probably even came with one. If not, there's plenty of resources online. There's no shame in using a reference - it's ALL about self-empowerment, and you do that in whatever way works best for you. The tarot is just a tool. If you want to keep every card right-side-up and not do reversals in your readings, do it! If you want to pull out just the Major Arcana and not use the whole deck, do that too. If your deck says "rods" instead of "wands" or "coins" instead of "pentacles," that's fine. There's no wrong way.

Here's a simple daily practice: ask the question "what do I need to know today?" Separate the Major Arcana (that's all the named cards) and the Minor Arcana (that's any card with a suit - swords, wands, cups, pentacles) into two piles, then draw just a single card from each pile. Look at it as your Inner Self answering the question you asked: the Major Arcana card represents which part of your mind is speaking, and the Minor Arcana card represents what it is saying. It can help if you keep a journal of your readings (we love our fancy blank books, after all).

I know several folks who've bought tarot decks because they wanted to dabble in cartomancy, but they looked at the deck and were so intimidated by it that they just never really did. Hopefully this demystifies it a little bit and gives you something to start with :)

Blessed be <3

Even more confusing: the US Marine Corps is actually administered under the Department of the Navy but is considered a separate branch of service from the Navy.

The Marine Corps commandant (the highest officer) actually reports to the secretary of the Navy. So the Marine Corps is in this weird suave where it is a separate branch, yet also not.

Speaking of "need to post here more," I just realized that I have an adoptable that I forgot to post here!

This is Karabo - they're an African Wild Dog! If you buy this adoptable, you will get the ref sheet (age, pronouns, and sexuality can be changed if desired). It also comes with an unclothed (NSFW) version of the ref if you want it, along with the two simple color pin-ups.

This character can be yours for US$200! Please message me on Telegram (Alioth Fox (but you can call me Daddy~) (npub1wfj…jp6z)) if you would like to buy this character ^.^

I agree *to an extent,* but I am one who very much believes that all literature is worthy of analysis and examination, and *not just* for a "look at how awful this aspect of our culture is" perspective.

I think it's a mistake to take a work of literature and say "this needs to be relegated to the dustbin of history" as if its problematic elements make it completely unfit for consumption, because the truth is that doing that really paves the way to purity-testing literature and having to make sure everything we read/watch/hear is squeaky-clean and unproblematic. There is *value* in Harry Potter beyond merely examining its problems. The most problematic literature you can think of is not monolithic in its awfulness.

None of that is me sticking up for JKR or for people who still play into the hype of it! Fuck JKR and fuck anyone who still can't detach themselves from Harry Potter. But for me, that has nothing to do with the literature itself and everything to do with the fact that contributing to that hype (even if not with money!) directly contributes to the material harm that the author is doing. It's inarguable that Harry Potter is a historically significant work of literature, but the problem is that its history isn't finished being written yet.

Oh, 100%. What I'm saying is that "she got many young people interested in reading" is what her legacy *could have been,* and she wasted it. Literary themes aside, I see that as a tragedy.

It's also funny you should mention *Birth of a Nation* because the truth is that in spite of the harmful myths that that film engenders, it remains (adjusted for inflation) one of the highest-grossing films of all time, and it is preserved in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." We may not "need" to remember it, but people certainly do.

The truth of the matter is that, shall we say, "problematic literature" will always have its place in the literary world, whether its intentionally problematic or whether it's problematic by virtue of being a product of its time. I don't think people should be buying Harry Potter stuff, but I would fight anyone who tries to take it off the shelf of a library. I wouldn't want to watch *Birth of a Nation,* but I would fight anyone who tries to remove it from the National Film Registry.

We can't wrestle with the bad parts of our culture if we shy away from them and try to hide them - but neither should they be given a place of honor. I think that's a nuance that a lot of people don't understand.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, unfortunately.

What's frustrating is that setting aside the problems with the narrative, JKR *could have* had an amazing legacy because those books got an entire generation of kids *interested in reading* in a way that few other literary works have managed. And she torched *all* of that to the ground to persecute people who aren't hurting anyone. It makes me angry, but it also makes me deeply sad as a literature teacher.
