A reconstruction of The Mechanical Turk, a famous chess-playing machine built in 1770. Invented by Wolfgang von Kempelen, a Hungarian author and engineer, in Vienna....

In 1836, Edgar Allan Poe published an essay examining the Mechanical Turk, a famous chess-playing machine that had amazed audiences across Europe and America. The device appeared to play chess on its own, but Poe argued that a completely mechanical player should behave with perfect consistency.

#archaeohistories

This strange-looking armored car was the Škoda PA-II, nicknamed the “Želva” (“Turtle”) because of its rounded armor.

Developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s, it had an unusually streamlined body and could be driven in either direction, with drivers positioned at opposite ends. The Czechoslovak Army ultimately rejected it because it was heavy, cramped, expensive and poorly suited to rough terrain.

#archaeohistories

The migration of humans from Africa to the Southern tip of South America across the (now submerged) Bering land bridge took only 6,000 years according to archeological records. Racial types changed from Black to “Indian” during that migration to Chile. Northern Europeans racial became lighter in color due to the need to metabolize Vitamin D particularly in the cloudy Caucasus region where the white skinned people were named Caucasians.

#archaeohistories

Sophie Marceau as Princess Isabella of France in the 1995 film Braveheart, wearing a period-accurate, high-necked gown with a wimple head covering.

In 13th and early 14th Centuries, noblewomen typically wore high-necked, long-sleeved gowns with loose silhouettes that reflected both their social status and modesty expected at the time. Most athletes buy luxury cars—Erling Haaland bought a piece of history...

The Manchester City striker spent $134,000 on a rare manuscript printed in 1594, then donated it to the public library in his hometown of Bryne, Norway, so everyone could experience an important part of the country’s past.

#archaeohistories

Nigeria has a very high fertility rate of roughly 5 children per woman.

In contrast, European countries have very low fertility rates, often between 1.2 and 1.7 children per woman.

The key reason is age structure. Nigeria has a very young population, with a median age of about 18, while Europe’s median age is over 40. Even though Europe’s total population is more than 3 times larger, its aging demographic and low fertility result in far fewer births each year.

#archaeohistories

A 17th Century CE, lock that kept receipts...

This is a detector lock made by Birmingham locksmith John Wilkes around 1680. Its keyhole was hidden behind the figure’s leg, which could swing aside to reveal it. The hat and knob were part of the opening mechanism, while the small numbered dial recorded how many times the lock had been opened.

Long before digital access logs, this lock could tell an owner if a room had been entered while they were away.

© Architecture Hub

#archaeohistories

Guevara was interested in anti-imperial struggles beyond Latin America, and Saladin (the 12th Century AD, leader who repelled Crusaders and recaptured Jerusalem). The tomb acts as a powerful symbol of defiance against external, foreign occupation.

#archaeohistories

The Dakotas, also known as the Sioux, are a group of Native American peoples of the Great Plains, divided into Dakota, Nakota and Lakota. Traditionally buffalo hunters and skillful horsemen, their warrior culture and connection to sacred lands like the Black Hills led them to conflicts with the U.S. UU. in 19th Century, including the Battle of Little Bighorn and the Wounded Knee Massacre. Despite the difficulties, they keep their traditions alive.

© Native American Photos

#archaeohistories

A theory suggesting the Great Sphinx of Giza was originally sculpted as a giant jackal representing the god Anubis, rather than featuring a human head...

This theory proposed by Robert Temple, the theory posits that the disproportionately small human head was re-carved from a much larger jackal head during a later dynasty. The Temple of Abu Simbel, 1841...

This is a work from 1841 by the French architect and painter Hector Horeau. Horeau created this image for his album "Panorama d'Égypte et de Nubie" (Panorama of Egypt and Nubia), which consisted of watercolors and drawings he made during his travels in Egypt and Nubia (present-day southern Egypt and Sudan).

#archaeohistories

In 1960, Ormond Gigli turned a doomed row of New York brownstones into something unforgettable. With no budget, he gathered 43 women, gave them full creative freedom, and placed them in empty windows just hours before demolition. In European homes, especially from the 1600s through to the 1800s, architecture was designed to enforce social order...

Grand staircases were built to impress guests and display wealth. German colonial officials ride zebras in Dar-es-Salaam, German East Africa (1914).

One major challenge for colonial powers in Africa was the difficulty of using horses, which were highly susceptible to tropical diseases, prompting efforts to breed disease-resistant hybrids by crossing zebras with horses, donkeys, and mules at places like this German stud farm. Despite extensive attempts, they ultimately discovered that the zebra’s stubborn, untamable temperament could not be bred out.

This powerful photograph from 1957 captures more than just a moment—it tells an entire story of strength, love, and progress in a single frame. Guadalupe Soqui López, an indigenous woman, sits at a Singer sewing machine, her skilled hands poised to learn a new craft while simultaneously cradling her nursing child. The Mercator projection greatly exaggerates countries far from the equator and shrinks those near it...

Greenland is famously distorted, appearing as large as Africa, though Africa is about 14 times bigger. The oldest preserved wooden staircase in Europe (1344-1343 BC) was discovered within Hallstatt salt mines in Upper Austria.

The staircase was part of a vertical shaft system used by Bronze Age miners to transport salt from subterranean galleries. Its location within salt-rich environment contributed to its exceptional preservation, as salt inhibited growth of wood-decaying fungi. The structure remained intact until landslide in 1000 BC buried it, effectively preserving it for over 3,000 years.

In 1982, Mexico's El Chichón volcano erupted, causing devastating pyroclastic currents (flows and surges)—extremely hot and fast clouds of volcanic debris that form when the eruption column collapses. Nine villages were destroyed, and about 1,900 people were killed.

This photo, taken in 1982, shows the devastation caused by the pyroclastic currents. A remnant of a building in Francisco León can be seen with its reinforcement rods bent in the direction of the flow.

📷© U.S. Geological Survey

Ancient Egyptian Drill Core, specifically Petrie's Core 7, made of pink granite with museum catalog number UC.16036. It was discovered by William Flinders Petrie near Great Pyramid of Giza in 1881.

Granite is far harder than copper, material traditionally cited for Egyptian tools, making precision of the core difficult to explain. The find suggests either highly refined stone-working techniques or methods we still don’t fully understand.

Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, London

This incredible photograph from 1885 AD, of Anandibai Joshi of India, Keiko Okami of Japan, and Sabat Islambouli of Syria, who each became the first licensed female doctors in their respective countries. The three were students at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania; one of the only places in the world at the time where women could study medicine.

© Historical Photos

#archaeohistories
