Last night I posted about breaking (yet another) Uniball One P when I dropped my Grape model on the #train - meaning I was unable to finish my #sudoku ☹️

Equipped with my Banana One P, I was able to finish where I left off this #morning

I really do love these pens, though I prefer the (now broken) 0.38 in my Grape than this 0.5

Do check my working, but I think it’s right 😛

I only bought one #fountainpen while on holiday to #poland recently - a Bic school pen

It has a distinctive bit of tipping on it and writes a wet & broad line, which I find a bit odd given it primarily would be used on cheaper paper(?)

But the real unique aspect of this #pen is how it fills; I feel a bit like #jamesbond refilling a spy gadget when I pop in the small international cartridge to this pen 🕵🏻‍♂️

🏆 My first ever 5km #run

I took a route around #London following the Thames, which was rather serene - from Tower Bridge to Waterloo. #Running across the bridges was an incredibly freeing feeling

I’m happy with my pace, albeit I did pause in places to cross the road / find my way back to the river

This won’t replace my sprints I don’t think, but I’ll do one of these again in the next week and will make it continuous

Thought I’d share with the masses

Using one of my new toys from the London Pen Show this weekend, a Black Forest pen

I’ve been picking up a few pocket pens lately, and this one is really dainty so definitely fits the bill

I tried this brand at a pen meet last month and knew I had to grab one for myself. I don’t think this will be the last pen from these guys I own 😬

Anyone head to the LWES yesterday?

🙄 BOCTAOE - But of course there are obvious exceptions!

Writing with my Majohn P140, essentially a Montblanc but demonstrator (probably the same “precious resin” too!)

Another imitator is the ink, Diamine Pansy, which reminds me very much of Lamy Dark Lilac.. albeit a bit darker and with more(!) sheen

🤪 Seize the memes of production!

I’ve been trying to reconcile Adam Smith with Karl Marx lately, a union as testy as between Montague and Capulet, and by god I think I’ve done it

The new era of air removes the barriers to entry of capitalism described by Smith, and the alienation discussed by Marx

Ideas are now permissionless and with zero marginal cost; we’re no longer estranged from the outputs

🧧 Live below your means for freedom

People upgrade their lifestyles too quickly and they fall in a trap of trying to sustain the life their salary has bought them and dream of the next payrise

🔄 They get another pay increase and the cycle continues

Live like your old self in lieu of any growth in income and you’ll find freedom, while others are chastising themselves with golden handcuffs

The two most addictive things in this world are h£roin and a monthly salary

A salary ties input to output. You cannot earn non-linearly; when you sleep, you stop earning. When you retire, you stop earning. On holiday? Not earning!

The goal is a career where inputs and outputs are disconnected. Even the best lumberjack in the world is maybe 3x better than the worst

That ceiling doesn’t exist in leveraged work

My mum once told me as a kid you can make your own luck. She was right

Four types of luck exist. Only one is out of your control. The other three are deterministic; built through character, skill, and persistence

Positive EV across hundreds of iterations. The occasional loss (and they WILL happen) doesn’t sink you if the long run edges your way

👾 Want to play a game?

You have two choices: the wealth game, or the status game

Wealth is positive sum; assets that earn while you sleep. The reward is personal sovereignty

Status is a zero sum game we’ve been playing since monkey tribes. By definition, someone has to lose

Money doesn’t buy happiness. But wealth buys freedom; and that’s worth more than any yacht, Rolex, or fast car

🚢 When you’re doing A THING, you’re actually doing TWO THINGS

You’re doing the task AND keeping steady while doing it

Don’t cry over spilled milk! If you get angry, you’ve failed

Not because of the mess, but because you lose control over something that’s already happened

When the spanner hits, you’re dealing with the problem and scrambling to recover equilibrium you forgot you were maintaining

Two intentions: do the thing and stay steady doing it

😏 Sexy flex!

📊 This fortnight’s four pen rotation, with some statistics:

75% of the pens I inked up have a soft or flexy nib

50% of the pens I inked up I’ve replaced the nib myself [TWSBI, Leonardo]

And I 100% I love these choices

🤔 If you had these pens inked with these nibs.. how are you using them day-to-day? I need some inspo!!

I have been enjoying using my Kaweco Liliput recently. Dainty, I think you'd probably describe it

🤏🏻 (Or 'bloody tiny’!)

🫧 It was a dry writer when I picked it up. A soak in washing liquid and water helped a bit, but more needed to be done

I got violent with the nib in the end, and it now writes a gorgeous wet line

Have you had a problematic nib in the past, and how did you fix it (or is it still troublesome?!)

🚇 I lost a really cool pen yesterday, a double line felt tip and it had my favourite two colours. I think it fell out of my pocket on the tube

Currently unsure if I’m excited for the person who found it, or envious; I hope it falls into the right hands, at least

I picked up the Pilot G-TEC C4 to make myself feel better, as I’ve been meaning to expand my non #fountainpen collection for a while

😍 This may be the finest rollerball I’ve used and I love it

🐢 I bought a traveller's notebook and l've been all over it lately.

I’m enjoying writing in it with this pen and ink combo; the Pelikan writes a nice wet line with a buttery smooth nib, and the ink is a pond green with a tasty salmon pink undertone

As if Alt Goldgrün went on a sushi date!

🆕 Two new pens in the rotation for the next two weeks

I finally got a Kaweco Sport fountain pen and I am excited to use this classic pen. The other new pen is the Jinhao 82

I've had the Liliput on my mind lately for some reason, so I decided to ink that up, as well as an M400 that I recently lent out for hire.

🫟 What are you thinking of the ink combination?

The blue is watered down, but I like the earthy tones with the ‘pastel’!

I had an interview yesterday at a stationery shop and I was asked a very cool question.

“Sell me a pen,” I was asked. So I got some info from the interviewer; they said they:

✅ Like a fine point
✅ Need a lot of ink
✅ Wanted a fountain pen

I suggested a Pilot 823. Japanese pens have finer nibs, it’s a vacuum filling pen, and (err) it’s a fountain pen!

Anyone would have suggested anything else?

🫣 I accidentally bought a pen.. it happens!

In the ten years that I’ve been into the pen hobby, I’ve never had a Kaweco Sport and recently I’ve been contemplating remedying this fact

(Never owned a Safari either.. maybe the next on my list?)

👨🏻‍⚖️ Saw this pen on eBay for a good price, put a bid and forgot about it until I got a notification telling me I won the auction!

Have you ever ‘accidentally’ bought a pen?

It’s #StapleDay!

💥 I love it when staples are coated, rather than just being a regular chrome colour; these black ones help make the luminous orange gridlines POP

It has taken me 22 days to get here.. a hairline above a page a day!

I find that staple days are great to take stock of what’s written and rediscover ideas, thoughts, and the occasional doodle

What’s your process for filtering through notebooks?

🦊 Anything essential is invisible

I moved house last week, which meant looking through my ‘ink box’

I came across a sample of Montblanc’s limited edition ink celebrating Antoine de St Euxpery’s fantastic work ‘The Little Prince’

This book had a profound impact on me.. I hope the ink will too!

📕 It’s here!

My Quo Vadis notebook came on the weekend and I’m super excited to dive into it and create a new system

🤪 Life is busy at the moment and I don’t think I’ll get round to it until next week, but the thought of sitting down with pens sprawled in front of me and a good beverage to accompany me feels like the light at the end of the tunnel

(I couldn’t help but at least mark my territory on it for now..)

🃏 A Soviet, an American, and a Japanese walk into a pen case

This fortnight's rotation shows history has not ended, with two vintage pens - one Soviet and another American. The former bears a resemblance to a certain German manufacturer, and the latter one of the most iconic pen designs of the 20th century

Also in the arsenal (not nuclear, thankfully!) is a Japanese pen that has a juicy wet nib made my Sailor

I bought a Quo Vadis Life Journal!

I have been thinking about how to enhance my workflow lately. I currently take what you could call a "bullet-journal-lite" approach

Back in 2016 I understood the basics of the system, but never ventured past that

It's become stale, and I've recently become confused with how to integrate my #Obsidian workflow with BuJo. I need a revamp

So I bought a new notebook. That approach usually works (right?!)

I have my XOXO 2016 Field Notes in rotation with my Retro 51 roaring 20s (number 113) currently

I had a pack of these maybe seven years ago and they never left their plastic wrap, which caused me to sell them

Found a pack recently and ykno what? This design is TOO BEAUTIFUL not to use. So I bought them

So here we are

I’d probably do this even with a Firespotter.. would you?

The three pens in my current rotation for the next fortnight

💸 Wingsung 699 - perfect for those who want the 823 without the price tag (I prefer the slimmer profile, honestly)

🐲Jinhao 1200 - for those who own Diamine Red Dragon and appreciate an on-the-nose pairing to make a bold statement on the page (and desk!)

✈️ Pilot Myu - do I really need to say more? It’s a beauty with a Concorde profile. Stamped H980

🤔 I have an intense desire to just ‘know stuff’

Have you ever needed to understand how capillary action works and how it makes a fountain pen write?

(Then you totally get where I’m coming from)

🐍 This morning I was writing notes on #Python classes. I’ve come across the concept before, but never dived in or fully understood..until now!

The irony is I was writing in #HTML and #JavaScript the rest of the day, though my inky pen pals helped me with that, too! #fountainpen #coding #programming

What's the DEAL with fountain pens?

I don't know, but what I do know is that I get an insane enjoyment from them, and the community is such a great thing to be part of

Pens have got me through some hard times, and they're helping me through some troubling waters once again

Here's a post I made discussing my current rotation (pictured), love for fountain pens, and the London pen show

PS - any info on this Retro 51?

🍫 It’s spicy, dark chocolate, full bodied, and dark berry

👀 I’m on the lookout for a new pocket notebook, as I’m nearing the end of my current one

Also on the radar is a new pen. I’m currently travelling with my Parker Sonnet and Falcon; the first and last pens I bought!

Maybe an ink too. It’s a cheeky day, after all!

Following up on a recent post about using pocket notebooks in place of a phone

The ‘project’ is going great and I am not only writing more notes, but *better* notes!

The only downside is I left my phone once at the office and so when I went to buy some lunch, I had nothing to pay with (these aren’t the ‘paper notes’ that supermarkets accept, it seems) #pen #fountainpen #writing #productivity

🗓️ It is in its infancy, but I wanted to get something in the works in time for a post about the #London #fountainpen show this Sunday!

I used to #blog about pens way back when. This new website will be my place to talk about everything that interests me - from pens, #code, #poker, and so much in between!!

Parker squared? 💙🩷

I remember heading to a stationery store with money my nanna gave me for my 18th b’day to get the Sonnet and a bottle of Quink

It would be my first fountain pen; what started the addiction (and it was all downhill from there! 😳)

The Falcon I picked up the final London Pen Show before Covid screwed everything up.. Look at that nib!!!

There have been a bunch of blog posts and #youtube videos on people swapping their phone or other #tech in favour of pocket notebooks for quick notes

My phone isn’t a distraction for me. I do, however, have some unused pocket notebooks - which just ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH!

So I’ve broken this one out, a favourite Field Notes of mine that speaks to me because the cover art is uniquely made by a computer #algorithm

And honestly? I prefer it over my phone! #productivity #fountainpen #pen #stationery
