As Energy Secretary in the mid-1970s, Tony Benn proposed using revenues from North Sea oil to create a state-managed fund through the British National Oil Corporation.

His idea was to establish public ownership over the oil wealth and reinvest the proceeds into British industry, energy infrastructure, and long-term economic development, rather than allowing the profits to be absorbed into general government spending.

He was ignored.

#Thatcher's government used North Sea oil revenues to help fund sweeping tax cuts, pay off national debt, and cover the rising costs of unemployment benefits during restructuring in the 1980s.

Unlike countries like Norway, the UK did not create a sovereign wealth fund to save the oil money for future generations, choosing instead to integrate the tax windfall directly into the general government budget.

Todayt, we are in horrendous debt meanwhile Norway which has a government debt of around 54% of its gross domestic product, is not in financial trouble because of that massive sovereign wealth fund, built from those oil revenues.
