This is one of my first season milkweeds. I foraged the seeds from a nearby plant and got them going indoors and everything. This one in particular got eaten to the ground twice. Both times, it came back as twice as many plants.

One thing I've been learning this year through gardening is that plants are incredible. They have their limits (our sunflowers didn't recover from being repeatedly chomped), but some of them really spring back.

I met a guy from Iowa (or maybe Idaho, I forget which) who up and moved to Hawai'i thinking he could line up a job and housing but failed to line up either and ended up enlisting because it was that or sleeping on the street. And apparently they were pretty aggressive about recruiting him while he was homeless.

I lost touch with him after that, but he seemed like an okay guy who made a bunch of bad decisions and just got taken advantage of.

I think the plants that have impressed me the most in the garden are the violas and the marigolds. I've only ever seen either of them looking kind of sad and small before and didn't realize they could have just so many flowers or get so big. They're not the biggest plants in the garden, I just expected them to stay tiny and they didn't.

Pokeweed or no? I didn't plant anything exactly here, but I accept some volunteers. It's crowding out some plants I do want and I don't think I want poisonous plants in my garden, even if they are native and beneficial otherwise because I have a child and it's also overcrowding a few things I did plant.

It's coming up as a 38% chance match for pokeweed on PlantNet with a drop off after that.

I watched the tunnel re-appear this morning. The mole seems to have dug it from the other side and I guess just powered through the coffee grounds to the side I thought was the tunnel entrance (if the coffee grounds even bothered it at all).

I think the next step is going to be to plant some marigolds and chives (and maybe some lavender) in and around the garden as a deterrent. If that doesn't work, I'll look into a screen underground to keep it out of that garden.

I have a mole digging in my moss garden. It looks like it's digging in from under the driveway.

I've been preparing to add a few more low-growing plants and decorative rocks to the part of the garden that gets more sun, so I took out the grass and rock gravel that was there and then put a bunch of coffee grounds in area where the mole tunnel enters the garden. Hopefully, the scent will deter the mole from re-digging the tunnel so I won't have to resort to more drastic measures.

I dug a hole (with a little help from my kiddo), put the tree in it, backfilled and did some initial watering and added mulch.

Next phase is to build a small fence around it to protect it from the local critters.

A deer munched on my daylillies! They apparently don't like them that much, but I guess one of the local deer was hungry enough to try.

I plan on fixing up and expanding this part of the bed (I've already been weeding the grass away since it had been taking over), so I'll be sure to include some plants that deer like even less when I plant some companions for these.

I got a late start planting my seeds that need to start indoors, but they've started to sprout!

The goal is to have a bunch of flowers for the local pollinators. Not all of them need to start indoors, so I haven't started those.

There are milkweed seeds (only one has sprouted, but I collected and planted two types) lots of violas and daisies and no lavender has popped up yet.

Nothing will be going into the ground for another month, but it's nice to see some progress.

Edinburgh is pretty decent without a car. It relies on buses more than trains and trams though. The ground is apparently too hard to dig a subway through (it's built on ancient volcanos) and they have plans to expand their tram system, but the bus really does take you most places you want to go (including out to the countryside).

I think that men (who are disproportionately wealthier on average) are doing just fine wrecking the planet of their own volition without blaming their wives for it. Anecdotally, the couples that I know who are high-consumers tend to both be high-consumers. The wife might buy lots of household junk and clothes, but the husband will buy lots of cars or electronics.

My kid is a toddler, so we're not even in the territory of phones being a thing anytime soon, but we're also not getting a tablet and we're introducing them to computers via keyboard and mouse. I just don't think throwing smartphones and tablets at children is a good way to encourage digital literacy in general, even setting aside the safety/privacy issues.

I think part of it is the right wing media. Like, when Fox did their interview with Harris and they showed a Trump clip, but edited out the bit where he went on a rant about "the enemy within".

She called them on it, but for people who get their news from Fox, they're always seeing the "high points" and none of the lows for Trump. They miss him being incoherent or saying that he'll be a dictator on day 1 and just have people on downplaying whatever gets through.
