GAO does good work but it needs Congressional backing to be effective. It can—and does—say that DOGE, and this administration more generally, violated the law, but it has limited ability to compel testimony or publicize the way Congress can.

With the way the “unitary executive” has been going, Congress is going to need many more institutions like the GAO inside the legislative branch.

Mega-corps are very dependent on a favorable regulatory environment, which makes them vulnerable to coercion by a government that doesn’t believe fairness is a virtue.

Companies like Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have an enormous attack surface, and there’s only a handful of them that need to be coerced in order to change the landscape.
