I recently had the joy of hiking Mt. Rodgers and Grayson Highlands in Southwest Virginia. This was a bucket list hike for me, and I'm only sad I never did it sooner!

Mt. Rodgers was a bit anticlimactic. Being the tallest point in the state, you'd expect some sort of pretty view at the top. Instead it's all wooded with no scenic views, just a survey marker at the peak. But the hike up was worth it, with tons of cool trees and lichens and mushrooms, and it was a great place to stop for breakfast.

The real beauty of this hike was the Highlands area. As the woods open up you get stunning views of the surrounding mountains, beautiful rock formations, and even wild ponies!

When I go back I plan to make it an overnight backpacking trip. There's just too many beautiful things to see here, and many more unexplored trails.

I decided to take advantage of yesterday's rainy/cooler weather and visited #Shenandoah National Park. I hiked the Rose River Falls loop and the Bearfence Scramble. The weather was perfect – very foggy and slightly drizzly. And the waterfalls were gushing from the recent rainfall!

Rose River Falls is one of my favorites in the park. It’s not too easy or too hard, and it follows the river most of the time so you can constantly hear the gorgeous rushing water. Plus it always has the coolest mushrooms. It’s also a sentimental hike for me, as its the one I did the day my grandmother passed away. I’ve hiked it countless times, and it never gets old.

Bearfence is a short trail, only a mile long, but it has a ton of super fun rock scramble. As adults we don’t get to climb nearly enough, and you forget how fun it can be! The summit has a beautiful 360 degree mountain view, though it was completely obfuscated by the fog yesterday. I like tacking this one on to my day when I do shorter hikes in the park, to add a little more mileage and some fun.

I own about 20 #fountainpens that I’ve been collecting since 2016, when I received my pink Lamy Safari for Christmas and never looked back.

With this many pens, there are some I use daily (that same Safari is still my go-to!), some I use occasionally, and some that haven’t left the display case in years.

My current goal with my collection is not to acquire more, but to perfect what I already have. I plan to pull out those rarely used pens and tinker with them until each one works and writes exactly how I’d like. I’m hoping to learn more about pen care/maintenance and stuff like nib grinding in the process.

Two surprise #snakes I saw this week.

The first guy, a big black snake, I almost stepped on while I was #trailrunning and way too focused on my podcast. We watched each other for a while until he went into the plant cover beside the trail.

The second little guy, a smooth green snake, slithered down the fallen tree and hung out with me and my friends while we were hanging out in the woods. We named him Clyde and watched him come in and out of holes in the bricks around the area.

These are the end result of a printmaking workshop I attended over the weekend. Most were made with block printing, but a few are screen printed. They're all fabric patches that I plan to sew onto clothing/patch holes with.

The class was at a secondhand art supply shop, and all of the fabric we printed on was secondhand!

Yesterday I finished my latest #chainmaille piece, a choker necklace.

This one was really fun to make and the pattern is easier than it looks. With #ChainmailJewelry you weave tiny metal rings together, one ring at a time. To me, learning a new weave feels like a fun 3D puzzle.

I managed to finish this ten minutes before it was time to leave for a production of Othello, so I wore it to the show.
