There will also be a bit that closes an internal valve so that hydraulic pressure builds up when you operate the pumping handle. Doing this should cause the splitting mechanism to operate. When that same bit is moved a different way it opens the internal valve and releases pressure in the hydraulic system.

On my floor jack this is a sticking out bit with a slot. I’d expect something easier to operate with a hand on your splitter.

Also we put effort into only getting very reliable models that are easy to fix and used and new parts are widely available.

Because while I can fix many issues I would greatly prefer not to. All repairs happen in my dirt driveway.

The snow is starting to come down harder, will probably be 3” per hour shortly! Went out with Stella to throw sticks down the hill but first we found two skinny dead pine branches we could break off. I needed skinny light branches so when I threw they would float a bit on top of the snow instead sinking where they might get lost.

Well skinny sticks get found but they very quickly turn into skinny stick bits! Next time I think we need 8 sticks minimum!

Snow shovel recommendation.

If you have snow to move a Canadian style push and tip shovel is much easier on your back than lift and toss shovels.

I push it along and when it has a plausible load of snow I tip up the handle all the way to dump the snow.

If I need to I can slide the whole load up a moderately shallow snow bank over the top of the snow bank and tip it over the edge.

It’s also a great way to move heavy things like snow tires from one side of a snowy yard to the other.

About 10 years ago I was in my basement workshop, bare feet, power tools, heavy clamps, pieces of hardwood, etc.

I wasn’t planning to be there long , there was a quiet voice in my head that was saying: “Put some shoes on!”

A month ago I mixed compost into the soil in my 30 gallon fabric growing bags and planted a winter cover crop of winter rye and hairy vetch. I’m always amazed that these seeds can germinate and grow in the cold.

Hairy vetch is a legume and fixes nitrogen in the soil. I’ll compost and/or dig these plants back into the soil next May.

I think the first photo is the winter rye and the second that has redish highlights and more of a spiral wrap is the hairy vetch.

Stella the bouncy, snuggly, retriever/lab mix on the left and Suki the older “concern” dog on the right. Suki always wants all the people and animals to get along and will run to stand in between any conflict.

I’d never tried to grow a winter cover crop before and had never heard of Hairy Vetch. I thought the name sounded very funny. Discovered it is very good at fixing nitrogen from the air. It’s much smaller than the Rye but seems to grow fine twining around the larger sturdy Rye stalks. It will self-seed easily but I added both to the compost before their seeds dropped.

For others here’s a closeup of the Hairy Vetch.

Winter Rye and Hairy Vetch cover crop from about a month ago. I planted these last Fall. This photo was just before I dug them up and added it all to the large compost system.

The almost mature seed heads on the Rye were exquisitely beautiful!

The smaller plants with the purple flowers are the Hairy Vetch which fixes nitrogen in the soil from the air. Zoom in at the bottom to see the Vetch.

Also a friend gave me this large 80 gallon rotating composter. He had never assembled it. I think it’s about $200 but am not sure.

In 1993 when my oldest daughter was just 18 months old I had her in her car seat and put her down in the kitchen and ran quick upstairs for something I forgot. When I got back she was gone. I started looking and calling her name. After 30 s I was wondering how I’d tell my partner I’d lost the baby. I kept looking and calling and finally I heard a tiny snort under a table. The snorting got louder and turned into huge laughter. She tricked me!!

If you regularly get annoying follows you can change settings so that folllws instead are requests that have to be approved by you. About 25% of the follow requests I receive are obvious fake accounts.

I’d love to get rid of FB altogether but have family/friends there who ate important to me. Have greatly reduced opening. Simple scaffold that helps me was to move FB on my phone into a Meta folder. On laptop I only open FB on a browser I use for nothing else — and open it rarely. Almost every “friend” on FB I know IRL and have hugged. This community was personally very supportive when my partner had a major heart attack Christmas Day.

April 2021, our blooming magnolia tree covered with snow!

Update: this is in the alt-text and I realized that it probably makes sense to include it here … considering the times beauty and kindness need extra support!

The branches are now extra heavy and are hanging down but none have broken. I have several poles cut from other trees supporting some of the branches with heavier snow load on the right.

How do they do it?

My Saffron stays green all winter and has completely died back above ground by early June. They come up again at the end of August-early September. It’s hard to imagine they are creating more plant mass in the winter — but they keep making new corms every year??

Another fun example of what I sometimes describe as domestic magic: my partner and I to spend time once a year at Emerald Isle, SC. Driving there we would get a wonderful 2 hour break taking a ferry from Cape May to Lewes DL.

I’d often playing an instrument I made up. People were very curious and would ask me about it. I’d tell them a bit and then ask if they wanted to play it and just hand it to them. It’s open tuned so easy to play.

Last year I qualified for a type of plan that combines Medicare and Medicaid. These are called Dual-SNP plans. They operate like an advantage plan but at least in MA CCA did not seem to have the same disadvantages — presumably adding the MassHealth requirements for care provide a better foundation. This year I have original Medicare.

First year trying a winter cover crop in my 30 gallon fabric bags I have on rolling platforms on our deck. And they have germinated!

Seeded with winter rye and hairy vetch. Hairy vetch is a legume and should fix nitrogen. I’ll dig them back into the soil sometime in May. Maybe earlier if the vetch looks like it might go to seed.

These rolling bags on the deck are great for enabling my partner with serious spinal-related disabilities to still do gardening!
