Wood fire kiln update-although we had a fun time and excellent crew we failed to reach temperature with the wood fire kiln today. I'm pretty sure that our wood was too damp.

we are going to do a post-mortem to make sure we are able to hit our goal next time. but as the leader of this project, this disappointment hits hard---ceramics is not for the easily discouraged.. it's learniing curve can be brutal, lol!

the wood fired rocket kiln was designed by lisa Orr-there is some information about the rocket kiln on her website. She is an environmentalist, and designed the kiln to use recycled materials, get very hot, very fast, using not much wood, and producing very little smoke.

Tomorrow is the big day! We are firing the wood fire rocket kiln. We’ve been busy prepping, cleaning the firebox, splitting wood, testing our shelves, and as a bonus: Dawn, our project manager, washed the dirty studio towels- they are hanging on the kilns fence.

I was lucky to have a great team. We worked hard, learned a lot, and hit our temperature...and the pots look pretty good!

We did it!!!
Wood fired rocket kiln- we made it to a toasty cone 6 maybe cone 7 in 4 hours. We wanted to do it in 2 and a half hours, but ash built up in the secondary airflow-it took a while to realize and fix it.

I also learned about teamwork-most of my work is alone in my studio-this has been really good for me

A big thank you to everyone for coming together to do this! Art builds community!

We are making progress on our “Rocket Kiln”!

Our plan is to finish the build today, then test fire Sunday.

I’m extremely grateful to Lisa Orr (look her up if you don’t know her) for developing and traching this style of firing.

This is not just a more environmentally gentle way to make ceramics-it has also brought my community together. Such a good experience and we have t even made a single pot yet!

I brought an old linocut block out (bear with coffee cup) and thought I'd try printing it on STICKER PAPER. it's oil based ink, so

BAD NEWS: it'll take a week or so to dry
GOOD NEWS: they should be waterproof!!

I’ve been more withdrawn since the pandemic.

a few months ago I proposed building a wood fired rocket kiln in my community. To get this done, I have been around a LOT of people-building a kiln, teaching newbies to make work for the kiln, I also did a printmaking activity for our historic group.

It may not be much in the big scheme of the world, but getting out there and doing what I can has been really good for my spirit- and I think it’s helped others too.

thanks for the tips! The corners are definitely a potential crack point. I know the clay is formulated for art-has something (grog?) to help a little bit with cracking. Also, one of the secrets to success is to dry slow—let the clay shrink at an even rate. So far, it’s holding up—the next big test will be the kiln! Good luck with your studio’s—-if you haven’t tried pottery yet, it would be the perfect hobby for a soil scientist :) thanks again!

The dog will look a lot more like a sheepdog once I glaze it with black and white.

This is a new experimental process for me (combining my tile and printmaking techniques for a plate). Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

I'm happy to have the roof of the house carved out, with the three sheep.  All that is left is the sheep dog, who is the star of the show.

There is a sweet spot between being too wet and too dry and right now, I'm on the borderline of being too dry. So I am going to Wrap it up in plastic again and hopefully rehydrate the clay so that I could do some more work.

I want an ebike, but am overwhelmed deciding what to get. I live in a rural area, so want a battery with range to go distance, Will use it for light cargo (art supplies), but don't want a big or heavy frame. Thinking along the lines of Aventon Abound or tern quick haul. Any real life reviews/advice?

I don't have a lot of experience sewing, but I'm getting better with each week's patch project.

This week, i learned to IRON the patch before sewing! I'm having so much fun printing these. it's like making stickers for your clothes!

What an awesome project! i agree, people are really going to need #art to work through the feelings they are going through right now. I would be completely lost if i didn't have art --right now i'm using it as an escape from reality, but I hope to shift my work and use it as a way to help build the wold i want to live in.
