While he was there, he had children who grew up in the particular cannibalistic tribe that was hosting him. When he came back to New York with his kids as teenagers, they were like FUCK NO and went home to PNG and stayed tribal members, leaving their parents behind in NY. When they were still in NY, I remember talking to them about the things they missed in PNG: friends, close knit community, but mostly freedom. The kids had a lot of autonomy and lots of ways to exercise their own agency. They said they missed being able to walk into any random house to see what they had to eat (and being welcome to it). When they got to NY, they did that to the neighbors and learned really fast it isn’t socially acceptable. They said they will always prefer PNG, despite having to fight a brutal Indonesian occupation. They said everyone who leaves to “become modern” comes back because being modern is a hard, miserable life.
