I woke up this morning to find the "squirrel-proof" tube feeder my mother gave me missing. I don't think an animal took it because they would just knock it down and not drag it out of the yard.

It's unnerving that someone came into the side yard to take it - it's not visible from the street. 😨

Basically, you hang the cake so it's horizontal and leave the plastic case facing up to force the birds to hang below it. I'm not convinced this will work because they currently don't have any trouble hanging on to the wire cage when it's vertical.

I don't have a solution for the ground feeders. I may try safflower seeds because apparently they don't like that.

Maybe the combination of making it harder for them to get to the suet and offering seed they don't like will convince them to move on. As it is, they've robbed me of one of the few sources of joy the last couple of days. 😡

The European starlings have become a real nuisance. I didn't mind them when there were only a few, but now a ton are coming around and killing a suet cake in a day. They are very aggressive to the downy and hairy woodpeckers, and the Carolina wrens have stopped coming around altogether. Yesterday, I watched as two ganged up on a downy - one was above the downy on the same branch, and another landed below him. As the downy made his way up, the two converged on him and forced him out. #birds

This book, Hedgerow, is the last Christmas present my mom gave me. I told her I was interested in creating a #hedgerow, so of course she had to find a book on the topic. She was so proud of herself for finding it. She employed my daughter to search for it online, and she ordered it from a used book seller.

Anyway, this is all about hedgerows in England. I'm wondering if any #gardening folks here have ideas for native (Mid-Atlantic/eastern US) plants for a hedgerow?

Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences offers a master gardener pollinator habitat certification. You have to provide food, water, and shelter, as well as reduce invasives and pesticide use.

The planning worksheet is great for anyone who doesn't know where to start. See the recommended #NativePlants list for people in the PA/Mid-Atlantic region.

The certificate (and sign) could prove useful for code enforcement/neighbors/HOA problems.

#pollinators #gardening

https://pollinators.psu.edu/landscaping-for-pollinators/pollinator-habitat-certification

Winter rye as a cover crop. This was a new garden spot in the yard. Layered cardboard, compost, and top soil. I sowed the rye late September. The images below are from:

October 5 - the rye has just started to come up

March 13 - on the far left, the rye looks almost like lawn grass - it's maybe 2" tall, if that - it has survived snow and freezing temps

April 28 - the rye before I terminated it - it's about 3' tall!

I left the rye there, on top of the bed, as a mulch. #gardening

If you want to attract #pollinators, you could do worse than mountain mint (pycnanthemum). This plant will be covered with small, white flowers for about a month in the summer, and a number of species of #bees and lepidoptera love it. I read that hummingbirds will visit, though I have never witnessed this in my yard.

MM can be aggressive, so you may need to keep it in check, but that doesn't require much work.

You can make tea with it, but it's medicinal tasting IMO.
https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/pycnanthemum/
