In the slop era, software that hasn’t had significant changes barring a few small careful fixes for 3 years is S-tier in my book

quoting
note1lnw…nt73

Open Source hot take: A software project is allowed to be *done*. Not everything needs to add features or rewrite things. You can just be happy with functionality and focus on just maintainance. "Maintenance mode" is not always bad but can just show a mature product.

Lol Microsoft wants to be Capita now? So with this setup, rather than just outsourcing all your understanding of your code to an LLM, you outsource the interaction with the LLM as well, putting you at 2 steps removed from actually owning your systems. A 2-layer outsourcing system where arguably no-one knows how anything works. Genius.

Honestly no-one learns anything anymore. We were supposed to learn the lessons of how outsourcing makes everything worse decades ago. https://www.geekwire.com/2026/microsoft-announces-2-5b-frontier-company-to-embed-ai-engineers-inside-customers/

I sometimes think about how if open source had never happened at scale, and all LLMs had to train on was proprietary code, how different things might look right now. Breaks my heart; sharing code openly has been a huge part of my life and belief system for so long, and I was so convinced that the good that it did outweighed the bad actors taking advantage. I never imagined that the bad actors would win by automating their behaviour

One positive aspect of the normie tech industry going kookoo bananas about the plagiarism machine is that it has at least clarified my options. I *have* to make the indie life work until I retire now. The Plan B of maybe going back to normie tech for a bit is dead as a Midjourney Dodo. I never really wanted to do that anyway, but now I know I can’t, and that’s oddly affirming.

Plan B is now a barista or cafe job, I love making coffee and baked goods and you can’t interpolate those

I always considered myself a bit of a philistine - no arts training, didn’t get a lot of modern art, enjoyed galleries on a fairly basic level etc. Generative art has at least done one positive thing for me - make me realise that I do in fact appreciate art, not just on the surface aesthetic level; that the effort and thought and intention that went into an art piece does in fact matter to me. Without that, it’s just empty, subtractive even. So maybe I do get it, a little. 🤔

The main advantage of being a small player has always been that you don't have to do what all the big companies are doing, because they have a desperate amount of FOMO about staying relevant / trendy / a hot stock. It makes me laugh/cry that we spent decades trying to get the software industry to internalise that it takes far more effort to support & maintain systems than it does to write them in the first place, and yet seemingly every trendy development in the last 5-10 years has been about making that initial stage faster & sloppier at the expense of everything else

The trouble with using the character position is that even though it's technically accurate (and I always use that for the distance), it means when you walk past something the compass icon zips behind you even though you can still see it on screen. The camera position is not strictly the direction from the character, but it lines up better with the actual view and feels more natural. At least I think so

I do think LLMs capture the zeitgeist in one way: that we’re all supposed to just accept that things are a bit shite all the time, in tech and otherwise. That it’s just how things are & we shouldn’t expect better. Shut up, accept the slop, things getting worse, the enshittification. It’s just the way things are.

No, piss off. Things can be better, we’ve done it before. Man, gamedev on some days can be like pulling teeth, everything takes too long and every task seems to turn into a never ending recursive task-spawning loop with nothing to show for it, you just have to hang on to a faint hope that eventually it’ll come together. I think you only need to be cutthroat if you mostly deal with other people who are also like that. While the sharks are out tearing pieces off each other, I've been able to make a decent living interacting with mostly nice folks through mutual understanding and fair dealing. I might just have been stupendously lucky, but I'm not sure - I think fair dealing attracts fair dealers, and the opposite is also true.

But on reconsideration, for larger teams it's nice they can opt in to reflect that

Oo, some honest angel actually bought the more expensive Professional license for SUDS Pro on Fab yesterday. I initially didn't add a Pro tier for the Fab launch (when it became an option), thinking it might over-complicate things, but after seeing everyone else doing it I quickly reconsidered. I wasn't sure anyone would pick it, but it does make sense to have a tier for a shared multi-person license for better funded folks.

That's a nice Friday bonus, thanks to whoever that was 😊

Does anyone know if there's a good way to bulk "audit" assets in Unreal, such as finding sounds that don't have any attenuation settings? This is such a common thing for us, suddenly realising that we can hear a sound from too far away and it's because the attenuation settings are blank. So easy to miss

It's OK to just make something invisibly work a little better, maybe a little faster or with less memory, while still doing exactly the same job. the software is probably pretty cool already. Just don't make it worse, K? Take a little time and do it properly. Maybe even take a second to write some comments / docs? 👈😉👈

Unless you spot it in either the build output or the UE splash screen you could think you're using a UE version that you're not (I just had that but this time it wasn't the plugin). Could Rider be more overt about this?

But the best way for smart kids around here was to ride down the blustery coast on a push bike in the early evening, to a garage round the back of someone's house with a hand-designed sign that said "Microgames" 1/x

Finally got the scene capture based icon renders for hats, robes and beards working correctly for the character customisation screen. The awkward points being:

1. Getting textures streamed in before the capture
2. Fast-forwarding the mesh simulation a bit so that e.g. moustaches and hats that are simulated droop into their "rest" positions before capture - in the bind pose they're sticking straight out!
3. Switching anim blueprints because not all hats / beards use the same dynamics setup

Phew

I’ve heard there are people who can see a cat stretching and not say “biiig stretch” to said cat, and I do not understand these people
