Sometimes I think of some things.

Academic life is described in a vocabulary that never quite fits me. People defend their dissertations. They survive the defence, endure it, come out the other side. Even the fond accounts keep the grammar of combat: a wild ride, trials, exhaustion, and at the end the relief of having made it. The people involved are remembered warmly, as companions on the road, or more like brothers in arms of a sort... but the metaphor underneath is still an ordeal. Years of intellectual work end as a confrontation to be survived.

What interests me is the assumption beneath this. Agonism is treated as the natural condition of intellectual development, as if opposition, contradiction and overcoming were the forces that drive it. That is Hegelian: negation as the baseline from which everything must proceed. It is one way of meeting ideas. It is not the only one.

I think of it dialogically. Knowledge is a landscape, and I travel through it from one stimulating, edifying outpost to the next, each offering a new vantage point. On the way I meet people, books, arguments, disciplines and ideas that were outside my world until then. Some I reject. Some stay unresolved. Many become part of how I think. The aim is not to defeat the other voice, and not necessarily to reconcile with it. The encounter itself enlarges the world I have to work with.

So what I would want to say at the end is something like: I met hundreds of ideas that were new to me, and I was able to take in so many of them. I am ecstatic to have walked these paths with you.

This is not conflict versus harmony. Dialogue can be rigorous, uncomfortable and transformative. The difference lies in what the other person is taken to be. They are not an obstacle placed in the path. They are part of the path.

That is why "defence" sounds so odd to me. It places the culmination of intellectual development in successfully resisting the other. The dialogical view says almost the reverse: development is being changed by others, with no need for victory, synthesis or resolution at the end. For a defence not only to be delivered, but demanded, expected, assumed to be the only way things can be... that implies the existence of an attack.

The ideal ending is not "I defended my position." It is closer to this: I found things I had never seen. You showed me what I could not have seen alone. Some of it changed how I see. I am grateful that we walked part of the way together.

The question underneath all this is why we so readily assume that intellectual life needs an opponent at all.

Still, I can't help wondering whether all those Sunday mornings left some faint imprint. The resemblance I saw wasn't influence in any obvious sense, but perhaps an echo of those landscapes, and a shared sensitivity to atmosphere and light. If so, that's a rather lovely inheritance.

To be honest, I fail to see how any such corporate events can escape the gravity of becoming cringe-a-palooza. Appealing to a mass consumer market is fundamentally in tension with genuine edge. The appearance of edge without consequence is what sells, and that's what makes the whole enterprise phony.

Of course where I said "ZX Spectrum" I was identifying a specific 8-bit computer model that has very little custom design.

Other computers of that era like the Commodore 64 and the Atari 800XL had more complex custom graphics and sound chips.

But it's possible to consider those too, if anything like Harlequin exists for those other 8-bit computers.
I'm just not knowledgeable enough to comment about those specific communities.

      Anti-HIN Heuristics:

Search → doesn’t exist at the scale of your scope→if the cost/benefit ratio makes sense, just build it.

Search → exists but bloated→ maybe still build it, consider the impact of bloat. Sometimes you go with the bloat.

Search → exists but untrusted→ maybe still build it, consider the security impact of dependencies. Sometimes the risk is minimised and you can deal with a certain amount of it.

Search → exists but bloated AND untrusted→ most likely build it, consider the double impact of bloat and attack surface that should definitely inform your cost/benefit analysis.

      #

zen80 update: improved tests***Apart from the already substantial unit tests, we now have two additional and rather stringent tests:***

This test loads the ZX Spectrum 128 ROMs (0 and 1) and runs that machine's initialisation process. Then it shows a statistical analysis of the instruction coverage that's been executed during rom initialisation. (total percentage of different opcodes executed for each instruction group)

The second big test implements traps as barebones CP/M shims, loads ZEXDOC.COM and runs its extensive stress test (this can be long).

Work is ongoing to support ZEXALL.COM as well, an even more stringent version of zexdoc that also tests undocumented registers and quirks of the Z80, one of the hardest tests known. This will be next, after I'm certain that this passes all ZEXDOC tests without a hitch. The diagnosis was legit: imbalance matters. But the treatment is not just blunt, it’s conceptually flawed. Balance at the system level allows for actual trade to work, whist bilateral obsession ends up restricting or distorting trade unnecessarily.

You may ask... what's the point of bothering and going through all the hell and pain of designing a new programming language? Have you lost your mind? I choose creativity, and I choose growth.

Infusing new life into old platforms, and elevating existing ones that are not primarily promoted for ulterior reasons by big business. What works for human needs and what makes sense to humans is sometimes –and increasingly often so– not aligned with big business needs. And this is probably an understatement.

There are probably many more reasons, but I think these three should suffice to give the idea a good thought.

The main thing that makes me stay away from the novel as a form of art is that, for all of its potential and its complex beauty at best, it has catastrophically failed at its core mission of warning humanity and helping to avert a disastrous course of action.
