GM! I think this is getting close to a breakthrough in app development. Having agents inside your apps feels next level. No software to download, just need an API key (starting with OpenRouter). Easy to share apps with family and friends. It’s perfect for families to build games together. Give it a try and let me know if anything wasn’t smooth.

https://dev.pixieos.io/

GM! Focusing today on moving app development from cursor into the OS. Need to test the new workflow and agent tools. One new discovery: need mini “git branches” in each chat so that I can quickly roll back or discard failed builds.

Also, moving TypeScript validation into the OS was a big hit — the development version of Pixie is now almost 5 MB. Versus 1.3 MB for the normal version. I’m trying to get these as small as possible so it might warrant a sprint on additional file compression.

How does a nostr relay identify that a message is missing and restore it? Traditional nostr relays have no concept of missing messages. You can negantropy gaps but without knowing the full missing set. That prevents the system from finding and restoring full gaps. I suspect that this issue will show up in system resilience. Clients may get out of missing messages and key material. To compensate, you can move the feed protocol to the clients instead of the server, but then that might reduce DX for new integrations. Anyway, that’s what motivated our new relay for messaging: Move primary inventory to clients from the server (expect the server to drop messages). Use server as hot cache only. Backfill gaps from clients to each other. If it’s useful for you, feel free to use.

It’s good for prototyping and for bite-sized tech. However, if you need to build anything with serious complexity then you need to understand software modeling, architecture, and how to detect issues. In higher education generally, we might return to ye olde studies in languages, oration, persuasion, logic, writing, philosophy, etc. In software, we might see more of a focus on theory, architecture, etc. You might not be doing the typing, but you’ll need to design and detect when something is not quite right. I find myself rejecting a significant percentage of recommendations made by LLMs. In the past, when I’ve gotten into trouble (system dead ends), it’s when I blindly accept their plans.

Eventually the server could just enable clients to send to each other P2P.

https://codeberg.org/PixieOS

GM! Working away on moving all app development into the OS. Focusing now on TypeScript checking for the scanner.

Here’s how folders look so far. It was harder than I initially thought to get the transitions correct. About five different animation tracks going on to get the app icons to expand and collapse into their folders without jitter.

I’m facing an interesting UX challenge. How to incorporate testing into the app building process? When building with agents, you need to have a lot of test coverage to know when they break something. A lot of our users are kids building games and non developers building prototypes. Should be simple and visual. There also isn’t a lot of real estate on a mobile device. Has anyone seen this done well? 🤔

GM! Some nice morning quiet time before I head to the gym. Thinking now about a simplified welcome flow. Need to make it easier to create apps and get the agent working. Notice the new folders! I had too many apps on the desktop and needed to focus users on create app and pixie agent. Folders was a “small feature” that took a lot of time to create a native feel. A surprising number of states and animations.

Let me know if you want to collaborate on it. We should have full nostr support built into Pixie, but I always wonder how to make everything even easier for app builders. Point your agent at our repo to explore the API and what’s already in Pixie. Also check out feedsync which is a new type of nostr relay. We use it for P2P messages and file sharing. I wanted to do an OS so that we could enable nostr and later in-app bitcoin payments (stuff that big tech wouldn’t do). Ask your agent about our devkit and how to set it up locally so that you can explore the code and play around with it. Let me know if you have any questions!

https://codeberg.org/PixieOS

GM! Thinking about how we really need a community effort to crowdsource the world’s best cold storage solution. Secure, private, best ease of use, decentralized, family inheritance, etc. I know people are working on it, but it seems like everyone is working on it independently. Just wondering if a more unified approach would be better. 🤔

They're watching token prices dropping like a shitcoin and they realize they've committed trillions to a buildout and there is no ROI (for them) on the other side. The only solution is protectionism. Get the govt to outlaw their competition and force a national oligopoly. The fundamental problem is that the buildout was premature. LLM tech is likely a dead end for true AGI. We'll recognize AGI when it resembles biological brains. Some base instinct, but self learning, low power, able to understand real world cause and effect, common sense, judgment. I'm sure we'll eventually invent true artificial intelligence, but LLM tech isn't it. It's an amazing tool, but it isn't the end state and there seems to be no direct path to get there. We need to invent something else, and I'm sure we will (but not in time to save the AI companies and hyperscalers). We're moving to a world where "AI" (LLM tech) is going to be metered like electricity and provide an ROI like utility companies.

I’ve been feeling in the minority on this (you’re echoing it so maybe I’m not alone). I hear about devs being hands off and I always wondered whether I’m missing something. My project is close to 500k lines now so I don’t know whether that’s a factor (agent loss of context?). I now have PTSD from the mess that was created. Core processes implemented in multiple ways simultaneously. It all blew up when the agents themselves didn’t understand how it worked anymore. Had a do a full rewrite.

I find that, while the better models make fewer mistakes, a solid percentage of their recommendations and advice are actively harmful to the project. I was fairly “hands off” at the beginning of this project (so much fast progress!) but several months in, I realized what an absolute mess they had made. Every time they added a feature they often duplicated a large portion of the code, other agents did the same and this eventually resulted in an absolute spiderweb of dysfunction. It set me back a few months while i ripped it all out and came up with new processes to force structure, force code reuse and centralization. Just this morning, I caught an agent (grok) in another hallucination. I think that people get good results on smaller blocks of work, but I would worry that if you are fully hands off on a long running project with many cycles, where hallucinations can compound, then you might be surprised as to what they’ve actually written.
