An old cast-iron marker on a wall on Sauchiehall Lane in central Glasgow. A quick search around suggests it indicates the presence of a sewer. I've got no idea when it dates from, but the building it's attached to was constructed in 1931. It's the first one of these I've come across in the city, but I'm sure there must be more.

If you look to the right of these Glasgow tenements, you'll see a skein of geese flying across the autumn sky high above the city. Why such flocks of geese are referred to as skeins is unclear, but it's a word also used to describe yarn or thread, and when you see them like this, you can see they do look like a living thread snaking across the sky. No matter the origin, for me skeins of geese are always a welcome sight, even if it does mean winter's rapidly approching!

The former McLellan Galleries on the corner of Sauchiehall Street and Rose Street in cental Glasgow. Designed by James Smith, it was built in 1855 as part of the Blythswood New Town development. It became home to the McLellan art collection in 1856, one of the city's first art galleries. The dome was added by Frank Burnet and Boston in 1904, by which time it had become a department store called Treron et Cie, Les Magasins des Tuileries.

It's in remembrance of a cat which did a great service to the residents of Govan by single-handedly clearing out a heavy rat infestation, but died from injuries sustained while doing so.

The former Langside Hill Church on the Southside of Glasgow. One of my favourite churches in the city, it was designed by Alexander Skirving. Dating from 1894, this was the last of the great Classical style churches constructed in Glasgow. It was originally meant to have sculpted frieze on the pediment, but it was never completed, leaving it with an oddly pixellated appearance.

Sculpted by Archibald Macfarlane Shannan, it was unveiled in 1913. Lord Kelvin was also both the youngest (aged 10) and the oldest (aged 75) student to matriculate at Glasgow University. Between these two ages, he also serves as the university's Professor of Natural Philosophy for 53 years.

The former Twomax factory on Old Rutherglen Road in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. Originally built as a cotton mill in 1817, it was taken over by Twomax, a Glasgow-based knitwear manufacturer, in the 1920s. It closed in the 1980s, and has recently been converted into flats.

On the top of the chimney is a rotating sculpture called Smokestack by Adrian Russell Lamb and Rita McGurn, which was installed in 1994.

Panels like this, with the letters H and P on them, are pretty much the only visible remnant of the city's Hydraulic Power system. Built in 1895, Glasgow was one of the few British cities (and the only one in Scotland) to have such a centralised hydraulic power system, where water was pressurised using massive steam engines at a pumping station on High Street.

Martyr's Memorial Pillar in the grounds of the old Maryhill Parish Church in Glasgow. This cast-iron pillar, now painted a cream colour, was erected in 1835 in memory of 19 year old George Millar.

Millar was stabbed to death on the 24th of February 1834 during a dispute between calico printers and their employers in order to protect their wages. As such, he's considered a trade union martyr, and the pillar was erected by his fellow workers.

While this well-proportioned brick building on Dunn Street in the East End of Glasgow became part of the William Arrol and Co's Dalmarnock Ironworks, it started life in the 1870s as a factory for William Gunn, who made shuttles for power-looms. Power-looms had been invented in the 1780s and had dramatic effect on the weaving industries of the East End of the city as they were more widely adopted throughout the 19th century.

The 1860s Kibble Palace glasshouse in the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Created by John Kibble, the Kibble Palace was originally built at Coulport on the shores of Loch Long in the 1860s before being taken apart, moved to Glasgow and re-built at its current location in the 1870s.

This was the best I could when trying to capture tonight's eclipse in Glasgow: The sun partially hidden by the moon and briefly glimpsed through a crack in the cloud, a statue in silhouette, and a slightly confused gull that kept landing and then taking off again as if it couldn't quite decide whether or not it was time to settle down for the night.

Mosesfield House in the Springburn area of Glasgow. Designed by David Hamilton in a Castellated Gothic style, it was built in 1838 for the bookseller James Duncan.

Mosesfield House was also where, in 1895, George Johnston designed and built the very first British motor car as part of the Arrol-Johnston company. This was a partnership between Johnston and William Arrol, whose engineering firm built the Forth Bridge.

Teasels in Pollok Park in Glasgow. Teasel grows on areas of wasteland, and is great for wildlife as pollinators love the flowers and birds like goldfinches love the seeds. Unlike buddleia, it's native and non-invasive (and doesn't damage buildings). Traditionally, the spikey seedheads have been used to help process fibre prior to spinning and for finishing cloth before being superseded by metal combs in the 20th century.

One of the strangest things about the abandoned Shandon House near Helensburgh is this sign. The building is owned by the Ministry of Defence, and overlooks the Faslane Nuclear Submarine Base on the Gare Loch. It also borders on the Faslane Peace Camp. Even given this, the sign is odd, and to me, it doesn't even seem quite to make sense. It also automatically makes me think it is there for polictical cause (whatever that means!).
