yeah 99% of code (especially proprietary code) is means to an end. I dont see the act of writing code specifically as any more special than the act of mining coal (for example).

that’s why I separated out art; which is, in my book, *not* a means to an end (I’m using the term art here very specifically; not consoomerslop). and even then, I see no problem with models that are trained on freely licensed music/pictures and so on. Let people who want to use them, use them.

Of course I still enjoy writing code by hand. But it would be stupid of me to argue that that’s the only correct way to go about it. Especially when I have seen for myself that LLMs can be used to write reasonably correct (if mediocre) code. I myself can strongly care about writing “good code”, but it might be hard to convince a physicist (to take visuwesh (npub1nck…g5lx) ’s example) that writing “good code” matters. Like have u ever seen code written by scientists its utter dogshit most of the time, an LLM would probably write better code I think 😭

code that works is code that works. and the claim that LLM-written code doesnt work is getting harder to defend with every passing day. At the end of it all, most code is just a tool to do something else, and that something else is usually the important part.

A free LLM doesn’t have to be this way, in my opinion. There’s no need to go all in. I think there’s a middle ground. We should especially reject generative art and music and so on.

I don’t know if I wrote about this on mastodon before, but what you wrote is literally true for almost every technology in use today. There’s nothing intrinsically different about LLMs in that regard. I see the discussions about LLM usage and labor and these are the very same debates that surrounded the introduction of mechanized mining technology in Chattisgarh in the 70s (I think?)

In fact, my pet theory is that the reason elite knowledge workers (engineers, academia, writers) especially see LLMs as a threat is because it threatens their livelihood directly. Very very often this eliteness has been constructed and is enforced by extremely arbitrary, exclusionary and colonial (for the lack of a better word here) mechanisms. And I would even go so far as to say this sense of elitism is often highly misplaced. The very idea that LLMs can replace them is a (well deserved IMO) attack on their ego, so to speak.

There is zero reason tech workers should be so overpaid compared to other workers. Furthermore, tech workers have historically been in the business of fucking other labor over so it’s quite funny to see them realize that oh shit technology we make has consequences. I’d like to see us eat some humble pie tbh, we aren’t that special.

I see a quite a few of u being friendly with some people on here who I have strong reason to believe are (even if unintentional) assholes (some of them have been assholes to me directly) whenever they talk about AI/LLMs.

I’m QTing this post from my old account just so that I’m upfront and honest about my LLM/AI beliefs and usage.

I have spent the last 11 years writing code. I believe I’m a fairly competent engineer. I truly think LLMs are useful tools, to me at least. Even outside of vibecoding, I believe LLMs are an incredible pedagogical tool and good at writing “busy code”, if used correctly.

I pay $20 a month to OpenAI for codex, for the reasons listed in the QT. Feel free to unfollow or block me if you think that makes me a criminal of some kind.

But more importantly, I have some ideas about “agentic coding” that I’m going to be building out soon (in open!). I have a strong suspicion that what’s runnable locally is already very good. I don’t have a rig capable of running one of the bigger models unfortunately, so I pay OpenAI.

I want a future where I can run a free (as in freedom), local LLM on my laptop. One that doesn’t involve fucking over people, or the planet. I’m going to be putting in the work to see if this future is possible.

I don’t want tokenmaxxing, fucked up companies like OpenAI or Anthropic to win. I don’t think it’s necessary to keep burning so much compute and keep building so many data centers.

wanted to share the setup we use at No Tyrants, No Silence (npub1kct…l7zp) as well (made by @noteness@treehouse.systems !). it uses hledger under the hood and a gitops model to manage expenses (people file new issues using an issue template to mark expenses) and theyre automatically added to hledger + validated + the website is updated by a CI action
