Why isn't it more general?

Well, the form utility was written around 1971 when UNIX used a different unit for time, jiffies (60ths of a second) since the current year instead of seconds since 1970. This 60× precision caused times to overflow a signed 32-bit integer every 13.6 months, so the epoch was bumped yearly. This yearly ritual of modifying the kernel meant it wasn't worth generalizing to support any year.

An earlier version of form uses jiffies since a 1972 epoch. The version from UNIX V4–V6 does the bare minimum to update it to the new system of seconds since 1970, while keeping the yearly overflow.

#unix #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing

Some require examining the demanded registers across all callers, to determine whether a register is written or clobbered.

But a nightmarish trio of functions are mutually recursive. To correctly analyze these, I annotated points with the register and stack state. Loops merge states on backedges, branches merge states on join. So far so good; this logic remains relatively local.

At recursive calls, I'd initially assume the call would update all state and I'd represent this with fresh values for all registers. This lets me do a dataflow analysis as usual. But some of these fresh values were observed, so I couldn't stop yet, as a full fixpoint was required. I repeatedly propagated constraints between the functions until the calling conventions were fully resolved.

Yes, I did this by hand. Yes, I'm crazy.

I'm working on a decompiler for PDP-11 assembly to period-appropriate C, but I haven't finished it yet, so I instead played as the static analyzer.

5/6

#programminglanguages #reverseengineering

Now, we'd just load all the key/value pairs into memory, process, and dump, especially for a database so small. But memory was expensive and the PDP-11/20 had only 56KB.

Instead, it uses a file as the backing store and reads 512-byte blocks on demand, caching up to four of them, and flushing when evicted. It implements a buddy allocator with a full suite of functions, including coalescing and resizing. This was well before the standard library started to take form, so it was all bespoke to form/fed.

4/6

In 1975, when UNIX News was starting up, he used this form letter database to dump the list of contacts that served as the initial subscriber list.

The circumstances of the UNIX V4 tape found at the University of Utah are still somewhat unclear, as it was apparently not used for research and only sparse traces of its acquisition survived. But some letters to Martin Newell are in that form letter database and I hope to recover more information through forensic analysis.

2/6

#unix #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing

UNIX ed is a cut down version of QED, popularizing the tradition of regular expressions in editors. grep started as a standalone version of the engine from ed. em, ex, vi, and vim evolved from ed.

- In 1987, Larry Wall spread regular expressions to the next generation of programmers through Perl. Gravely, it uses backtracking, spreading terrible performance for decades. It derives its engine from the rn newsreader, which derives it from Gosling Emacs. James Gosling claims he wrote it from scratch.

- In 2010, Russ Cox, having spent time at Bell Labs, rejected backtracking and built RE2, a fast and scalable engine, generalized from work on Google Code Search. Its ideas have spread to Go regexp and Rust regex, a new generation of engines.

- Since 2025, Ian Erik Varatalu has been researching regular expressions for his PhD and has produced a fast engine using derivatives. It implements seldom-included intersection and complement and efficiently implements lookaround. It is faster than all previous engines.

#unix #computerscience

It introduced killfiles, which filter emails using regular expressions.

Well, I had incidentally just been researching historical regular expression engines and trying to trace back the development of regular expressions in Perl 1.0. Since Larry Wall created both, it seemed likely that rn influenced Perl. It turned out that Perl adapted the engine from rn and ultimately from James Gosling's Emacs. Since Perl removed attribution comments, I don't think this had been established before.

When I revisit that project, I'll need to update it for what I learned from chatting with James Gosling at SIGGRAPH.

https://github.com/thaliaarchi/regexp-museum/blob/main/viewers/rn.md

#unix #vintagecomputing #retrocomputing

It was presumably sent to Jay Lepreau for feedback and I think this is the only surviving copy. Jay worked with UNIX throughout his career and it was found among his papers, along with the UNIX V4 tape. I will be scanning it.

Personally, I found the book to be quite a fun read. It's a bunch of sore losers to UNIX's success. I just acquired a Teletype Model 37 reperforator-transmitter! I've been trying to track down a Model 37 for two years now, hitting many dead ends.

Well, this is the paper tape reader/punch that would connect with a regular Model 37 KSR, so it's not the same thing. But I've been wanting to be able to work with paper tape, so it's still quite exciting. I had never seen such a reperforator before, until I was asked for details on it.

I'll be hauling it from North Carolina next month and would love to visit vintage computing people. If I implemented that in the kernel, I'd need to grow the buffer from storing a single line to a page (though the kernel currently has no concept of pages of text). If I implement it in user space, I may as well just implement the more traditional arrow keys cycling through the shell history.

Pressing backspace instead of # was the top mistake made by LRC attendees, so this would make it easier to use for modern users.

The erase (delete last character) and kill (clear current line) characters were fixed to # and @, inherited from Multics, and not made configurable until a few months later around November 1974. Perhaps this change reflects the first time a video terminal was used for UNIX.

I made it send BS SP BS when backspace is pressed to visually clear the character, but this unfortunately makes it clear commands' output too. For example, this lets you visually clear the shell prompt. I could fix this by implementing something like curses, but that would move the logic to user space and incur overhead for swapping the process for a context switch on every character press. This was a complaint of early vi. Maybe I could track the column of the last printed text and not let you visually backspace before that?

#unix #retrocomputing

How were { } curly braces typed with a Teletype Model 33 on UNIX? These characters are especially important for C, but absent on this terminal. I'm excited to demonstrate programming with a teletype, as that hasn't fit into my other talks.

If you're interested, email (see my site) or DM me for a Zoom invite.

Abstract: We recently recovered UNIX V4 from a 1974 magnetic tape at the University of Utah. This version of the UNIX operating system, thought to have been lost, was the 19th copy distributed to the public, just months after the first public announcement. It was originally acquired by Martin Newell while managing the computer graphics laboratory, and it was likely connected to his foundational research in procedural modeling and the famous Utah teapot. UNIX V4 was the culmination of the effort to rewrite the kernel in C, made possible by the introduction of structs to the language, and has shaped all modern operating systems. In this talk, I put this artifact into context within the larger history of UNIX and demonstrate period-appropriate software development with a paper-printing teletype and replica PDP-11.

#unix #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing

Utah computer history: This IBM 7030 at the Computer History Museum is from the BYU physics department, used from 1972 to 1982. It features a 64-bit processor, well ahead of its time at its 1961 release, and was IBM's first transistorized computer. Only 9 were made. Before this machine's use at BYU, it was used at MITRE Corporation from 1962.

Visited and photos dated 2025-12-20.

#retrocomputing #vintagecomputing

My CoCo 3 works again! After hauling it across town to troubleshoot, it inexplicably fixed itself.

It was having signal issues. When connected to my Tandy CM-8 over RGB, it would only display with the second ground pin (pin 2) disconnected, but with a loud buzzing tone. It had this same buzzing when connected to my Portavision CRT over RF. But it worked just fine with my Commodore 1702 over composite. I didn't want to deal with this during my demo, so borrowed JJ's Magnavox CM8562.

When I returned his CM8562 today, I brought along my CoCo and CM-8 to troubleshoot. But when connected them, all the issues were gone! It was able to simultaneously display over RGB, composite, and RF without issues. He suspects the issue was static from the CRT interfering with the computer.

This is the opposite of the demo effect.

#retrocomputing #vintagecomputing

Anything that can go wrong in a demo will go wrong.

I couldn’t connect to the projector and used a TV. My serial pin jumper hack for my Teletype Model 43 didn’t work. My VT220 wouldn’t connect. My PiDP-11 fell, so all four standoffs are snapped with plastic stuck in the case. My Portavision TV wouldn’t tune to channel 3, so my three earliest CoCos were unusable. All my Commodore 64 games on floppies were unusable, because I couldn’t find its serial cable.

I’ve troubleshoot all of these things before and have detailed notes, but am utterly incapable when frazzled.

#retrocomputing #vintagecomputing

Oh, and I already have a TRS-80 Pocket Computer 2. So many unrelated TRS-80 models!
