Taking a step back and replacing Ethernet doesn't help today's problems with the scale of the Internet. Starting the v4 replacement process over with a protocol with no running code, 30+ years later, doesn't help with that.

India is absolutely kicking our butts at v6 adoption. Conversely, progress in Africa is slow-going, which is unfortunate, given how absolutely screwed that continent got when it comes to IPv4 addresses.

I would suggest that there's more incentive in the global south because Carrier-Grade NAT is the norm there (or anywhere else where the v4-per-capita is atrocious). The US (and others) doesn't suffer as much from that, at least on the wireline side.

Any IPv4 replacement would take 10-15 years to reach the level of maturity where any given OS would be presumed to support it. We saw that in the mid-2000s with IPv6. Does the IPv4 have another 10-15 years of viable lifetime in it to wait for a new protocol to roll out, as slowly (if not slower, for other reasons) as it took IPv6?

Centralized control servers? Completely upending the global BGP model in ways that wouldn't work for many network operators?

If you think that's not necessary, I question how well you understand how certain pieces fit together. 👀

And under a(n ARIN) Registration Services Agreement, if an org has IPv4, they can get v6 for IIRC typically no cost. (Been a bit since I've meaningfully had access to an ARIN account, the details are getting a bit hazy.)

      😑

Somehow I haven't seen any fanfare over 82% of the United States Postal Service's 56/8 being transfered to Amazon, presumably to fuel AWS's pool of $3.60/month IPv4 addresses.

Let's see: 13,762,560 IPs, at $3.60/month, that's $49,545,216 per month of profit on Amazon's part.

I hope USPS was paid dearly for supporting that grift, but I'm assuming not.
