When we had 40k monthly users I was paying about $120/month so an instance with less than 400 total users (not MAU) should be super cheap to run even with a few TB of storage and bandwidth.

It hurts my heart to read instances closing down over costs and finding out they’re paying more than instances 10x their size. 😢

https://newsie.social/@jeff/114513118997692099
2025-05-15T22:55:05Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqs0xx5jwxw4kcjaz6za7qsqhfyncsmqmjexc347dhxfxwtle88ufsgzyzr0mwwulypv9d74hj4wsj8dy0aaspwzmwf2ukch75tmj58ecp28vespwyd Okay I don't know what the hell Firefox or YouTube or I did lately, but sometimes trying to open up videos on YouTube just results in a completely black window where the video should be. No perpetual loading, no error message, just fucking nothing.

And let me guess, this is happening to no one else and I should scream in isolation. 2025-04-24T04:53:12Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqsqxfhtx7yjyy9su2cys50t2a02gfufkgwh680am9qwge77rtyz92gzyzr0mwwulypv9d74hj4wsj8dy0aaspwzmwf2ukch75tmj58ecp28vf4qgvr In reply to nevent1q…59a3
_________________________

nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpq405c36vsz5eq9dknq7mpp3z0d8dj570lncxxzswh0528zvwrgamqejc6rs (nprofile…c6rs)

The problem is most peertube instances either have strict upload limits (something like 50 MB a day; understandably so since videos are very resource-intensive compared to text toots or images) or are limited to "content creators."

I'm not a "content creator." I just upload gameplay videos with minimal editing or narration. There is no space for users like me on PeerTube. Unless maybe I seek out an instance that charges for membership.

I'd love to get away from YouTube hegemony but I have few to no options. 2025-04-03T18:40:31Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqsyxaa4c535265atjqll6gum9gtrsg0qphjgu6cezve0trz8avsxfgzyzr0mwwulypv9d74hj4wsj8dy0aaspwzmwf2ukch75tmj58ecp28v72f5v9 In reply to nevent1q…ecp7
_________________________

nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqyeu3gr05kzm5j3tvkqyg6hzlghdcmaaftgvyt6kac5y6fum5pqwsjqu9u3 (nprofile…u9u3)

My favorite part is when people say "Bluesky has no algorithm" (as someone who studied computer science, I hate that "algorithm" has become this dirty and evil word). This is false. It does has a bunch of algo feeds that one can subscribe to (https://bsky.app/feeds). Things like "Discover", "Popular with friends", and so on. You're not forced or nagged to look at these feeds, but they do exist for anyone who wishes to use them.

Furthermore all Bluesky posts can be boosted by algorithmic feeds; there's no "unlisted" post setting. Forced discoverability is not good for someone who just wants a quiet social media presence.

Finally, blocks are public, which is a world of drama waiting to happen. There's even a block leaderboard https://clearsky.app 2025-01-26T19:14:08Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqsfuvy4jlrsdqzqp8xshade7wdc2zwtlm2x5r47mnm7f3t6ul8dh5qzyzr0mwwulypv9d74hj4wsj8dy0aaspwzmwf2ukch75tmj58ecp28v2226rn Huh, so TikTok access has been restored here in Healthcare Profit Land, but "thanks to the efforts of President Trump"

you do not, under any circumstances, "gotta hand it to them"

#TikTok #SocialMediaSalt #uspol 2025-01-19T19:12:48Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqspqq4l2vyf9k862vddglwmf2yzfp892uk7k58047wdkxjkl5cxe9gzyzr0mwwulypv9d74hj4wsj8dy0aaspwzmwf2ukch75tmj58ecp28vw2wh08 In reply to nevent1q…8kgp
_________________________

npub1rv4738d6q3nxf24v4gmg4u7lh3udmarsttfzp7q0xttdlqk5ls3s65ft5j (npub1rv4…ft5j) This but also D (Debt collectors) 2024-11-09T00:41:21Z
