I finished the Book-5/Novella-1 read-thru. Exhausted? Yeah. I slept 9hrs. I also need to quit readying books around elections.

Strange to think, though, that next year at this time I’ll be preparing to publish the last book in the Kovenlore series. That’s difficult for me to believe.

At least now I can slow down a bit.

I’m also, on the side, continuing to work on developing another mystery.

I have a demon in the Kovenlore series. He’s a corporeal demon and a recurring character.

For the most part, Greeze comes across as almost comical at times. Part of what makes him dangerous are his attractiveness and charm.

Thing is, he’s still a demon, and still is deadly, which eventually becomes clear in the story, but that’s a spoiler.

Technically, I don’t have to choose a familiar. I already have one. A cat. They’re a common choice and my preferred choice.

As a writer, my favorites to write were Mazatta the crow in The Kovenlore Chronicles, and the five rylls that belong to Zephtasha in an upcoming mystery.

The crow had limited speech, great wit, and amazing insight. The rylls were like five sides of a single personality.

I can’t turn off writer brain. It’s there, even if it’s silent. Meanwhile, reader brain enjoys the story.

I’m extremely forgiving, and will overlook a lot for an enjoyable tale, but if typos are everywhere, plot holes abound, or other inconsistencies are rife, writer brain becomes a critic.

Likewise, if a book is amazing, I have the thrill of appreciating the story as both a reader and a writer. That’s the best experience!

My goal for months was to make it through the Book-5/Novella-1 editing and read-thru by Nov. 1. I’ll finish today.

It has required extraordinary (perhaps unreasonable) discipline on my part. Even on the day I did TTMD, I made great progress. There were days when I promised myself I’d slow my pace the next day. I lied.

I also didn’t compromise on self-care. That made all the difference.

It was simple. I just wrote (approximately) 3,415,000 words.

Okay, the number IS real, but it wasn’t entirely that simple. There was a lot of learning and experimenting in there. I’d also say that my voice is still evolving, which I hope it always will.

In the end, there’s no substitute for writing, for practice. You can’t climb the mountain unless you climb the freaking mountain.

Typically, I limit it to a handful. Less than that if I can.

I’ll write more than that, but they literally are special occasions. For instance, a ball where there are hundreds present.

Big dinner parties are another, but I’m typically aided by the fact that all or most of the characters are known to the reader already.

Riparia is one half of a star-crossed couple, mostly because she can’t get out of her own way, though the other half of the relationship isn’t totally innocent.

She professes to having no musical ability, so I doubt she’d sing it, unless sobbing while strumming a guitar (which she can’t play) qualifies.

I’ve written orphans to small families, but there are always elements missing, from siblings to one of the parents to at least one of the grandparents. Found families abound.

Never have I written a full extended family, which is kind of foreign to me.

In dystopian Carrdia, grandparents are a rarity, and none appear. In prosperous Pannulus, siblings are rare due to the mysquanmic concentration beneath the archipelago.

I love the outdoors walking/hiking, but only a handful of times has it translated directly to writing locations. Other locations came to me via other travels, video, or pictures.

The biggest benefit is caring for my mental health, which is vital for me to write. Once my feet hit the trail, my focus becomes effort, sights, and not a bear snack.

Creatively, the big benefit is amateur photography. I’ll do a lot for a picture.

She’s a courier for the rebels, which is punishable by death, and is a woman traveling cross-country alone who hems her skirts near the knee. She wears high boots and a long cloak with a hood, but also appears to be an old hag, so no one cares.

Out of need, she learns to be a “lady,” but the defiance never disappears.

For me, like with my stories, there’s a tale attached to each map. I’ll share 3 of them.

Carrdia. There are at least 3 other versions, each extremely flawed, and none suitable for publishing. It took 20 years to brainstorm this one. The labeling became lost in the others, making them difficult to read.

Using the huge color continent map, I turned off the color and faded the land features. Still visible, I was then free to create contrast when labeling the map.

Ten years ago this month, I was preparing for my third NaNoWriMo when I’d draft Kovenlore Book-2, A River in Each Hand, my first true sequel.

Little did I know that my last major attack of HP would occur on the 10th of November. Yet, I won NaNo anyway (89K) and largely finished the book (the 2nd half was kinda skimpy).

Here’s the thing about maps. I enjoy creating them, so I have some that are elaborate, but what matters most is functionality.

A complex, colorful map doesn’t work in a book or on most e-readers. Often, it doesn’t help me, either. As a tool, I want it to fulfill a purpose.

That’s why I publish modified black and white maps. Most of those I use for personal reference are pencil sketches on paper.

One is a terribly written book that’s difficult to wade through. I’ve read those, but won’t attack authors.

Challenging in a good way are older works like Homer, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Hawthorne, Dickens, and so on. Ultimately, I find them rewarding.

On the other hand, certain genres, whether well written or not, would be difficult reads for me.

Yesterday, I finished the line edit with my clunky ole version of ProWritingAid. I mostly use it for typos and commas.

Next, is the read-thru. It guards against PWA having done anything strange to the draft. It’s also a last check of readability. Also left to do are finishing the blurb and updating the front/back matter.

Creativity gets me in a creative mood, be it my own or someone else’s. That includes the arts in general, even if it’s something like pottery that I’ve never done.

Exercise, like walking or hiking, can stimulate my creativity, sometimes because they settle my mind and allow my imagination room to work, or because of my surroundings.

I’ve written several flash fiction under 1,000 words, one of which is on my website: The Bridge in Distant Farthing. It was one of the stories that helped create Pannulus.

Typically, though, I don’t write shorter than short stories of 4-5K.

Most? For her heart’s sake, that’d be Maniff. In Kovenlore Book-1, she can’t make up her mind about his intentions and loyalties. Her waffling on this impacts their relationship, and the series going forward.

A useful mind would be Wizard Thullix, a wizard whose knowledge goes back centuries, and whose agenda is murky.

2019: Deep self-examination in my writing journal led to my 1st fantasy romantic suspense.

A huge one…

Late summer, 2014. Severely depressed, I hadn't written for months. My writing sucked, and I’d received feedback that (kinda) agreed. I wearied of my worldbuilding and epic fantasy.

In one night it turned around (another story).

I participated in my 1st of 9 NaNos. Meanwhile, I went on a 2-yr tear of overhauling my worldbuilding, redoing my maps, finding my process and voice, and generally experimenting.

I have a tendency to take the middle path. I don’t plot stories, but I don’t pants, either. I do flexible narrative outlines that guide, but don’t dictate.

It’s like having it both ways.

Kind of like Ontyre’s magic system. I have a vast amount of references detailing how it works. Yet there exist within it many unpredictable elements.

It’s a bit like science.

I let my characters do what suits the circumstances while they remain in-character. If that, in retrospect, turns out to be stupid, so be it.

What I don’t do is have my characters do stupid things for the sake of contrivances that serve the plot.

Character flaws, if unchecked, can easily lead to stupid decisions. Riparia, for instance, can be rash and stubborn, but also unthinking when she’s anxious.

I have these, big and small, almost daily concerning stories in development, being drafted, or others I’m editing. Even those that are “sitting.”

That’s what happens when you have different books in different stages.

Book-5, which releases next month had a HUGE one. I had a problem: the MC didn’t enter the story until a third of the way into the story. My revelation on a walk was: “She was always there.”

All my characters are a mix of positive and negative traits. The difference is that antagonists have the most toxic traits and are in opposition to the protagonist.

What I don’t do is make a character unlikeable for the sake of doing so, with the exception of a character so minor that they aren’t even named.

It’s complicated.

Collaborative could apply, but not with writing. As an introvert, solitary applies most of the time, but as an INFJ introvert, there are times when not having someone accessible makes me feel like I’m starving.

Thus, I thrive in my solitude for a while, but suddenly need to have someone around, which I don’t. That leads to depression if I’m not careful. I’d prefer accessible.

Cats and crows, and not because of color. For me, a haunting quality comes with thinking. They’re animals who contemplate.

For whatever reason, and unlike a lot of people, I’m not enamored of“fairy folk” stories. I have no reason why. They simply have never clicked with me.

Next up is prepping Book-5 and Novella-1 for publication.

The most dramatic, though, and the one that went in an unforeseen direction within a single book, was Riparia and Glistenelle in Book-2, but I hesitate to spoil the change since it doesn’t happen until the second half of the book.

I have written variations on the concept. Kinda sorta in Book-2 of Kovenlore.

In two of my Pannulus mysteries (The Missing Identity and The Expired Reflection), I focused more heavily on twists to the idea of a doppelgänger.

There’s a slight connection between the two novels, but it isn’t the MC or plot. In one story, the MC is tricked into becoming one. In the other, the MC believes she’s seeing things.

24hrs ago it was mild. Now, it’s near freezing and the wind is harsh.

If there is one, I don’t know what it is.

There’s also the issue that I have a writing filter for phrases, my subconscious always on the lookout for “Earth words and phrases” that don’t fit my Ontyre stories.

In an odd twist, I sometimes use the phrase, “be everwell,” in posts. I borrowed that from a character.

I live with a cat. When doesn’t she stare at me for no reason?

Outside of that, there are the chipmunks and squirrels I encounter on hikes who stare at me, but want me to think they aren’t staring at me when I know they are.

Things are not good in the Hawthorne home after I entrusted Evie Cat with an important task.

I’m arachnophobic, and had a tiny spider in the kitchen that she and I found.

So, I trusted her.

She sniffed it, set her paw on it, and watched it run beneath the refrigerator.

I lost my ever loving mind, and refuse to let her forget.

She doesn’t care.

Autumn…

My favorite season, it helped to set Book-1 then because it was comfortable. Only 3 of the 7 Kovenlore books are set in autumn (different years).

Strangely, my 2nd favorite season is winter, yet I’ve not set any of my 13 novels entirely in winter.

Novellas and short stories? Oh yes. I love the shorter formats for romantic holiday tales. I’ll eventually publish them.
