The records include email addresses, phone numbers, and office addresses, but also references to internal systems and sensitive information on undercover and surveillance programs. DDoSecrets published the archive, which it calls “Icepick,” on Wednesday. In a press release, DDoSecrets says the data is from DHS's Okta login system. In a note with the files, the hackers wrote, “They have our information, so it’s only fair that we have theirs.”

If you want a simple small solar setup, just get a 'solar generator' power station paired with solar panels. They're totally legal right now. no need for an agreement with a utility for net metering. You could immediately take your fridge and maybe more off grid. And it'll still work when the power is out. you can even take it camping with you.

And it was just, like, gibberish. There was a bunch of new comments, but I couldn’t make heads or tail of any of them. They’re just these clipped, weird, incoherent postings that I was just like— it screamed bots, just because anytime that I see just gibberish in a comment on the internet, I assume it’s a bot. But the fact that they were all from different accounts seemed very weird. And the fact that they also maybe seemed to be interacting in some way also seemed weird and not like typical bot behavior.

Here in the western states, one of the lowest hanging fruits is forest management/fire safety. Forestry is constantly doing understory clearance, then burning massive slash piles. With just a little bit of extra effort, those piles could be stacked in a better way for a more pyrolytic burn. Then extinguish the piles at the right point, and viola! biochar to sequester carbon and increase the health of the forest.

Or... get enough farmers on board, and they would volunteer to help with the slash pile burning in order to get free biochar to add to their fields. Almost all the these solutions are win win win and more win.

biochar increases crop yields while decreasing the impacts of both drought and floods brought on by the climate crisis while making a positive impact on that crisis.

In developing countries in SE asia, we could be paying/training people to grow bamboo specifically to turn into biochar. It's one of the fastest carbon drawdown plants out there. If you use a proper closed loop kiln, 100% of the carbon drawn down from the atmosphere is sequestered - most as biochar but the remaining gases are captured and can replace fossil fuels to run generators, tractors, and power plants. win win win.

The easiest way to reduce atmospheric CO2 (assuming we're no longer adding more) is to hack the short carbon cycle that nature is already doing.

in a nutshell that cycle is: plants drawdown CO2 via photosynthesis converting to living biomass carbon. As parts of the plant die, that biomass begins a 1-20 year process of decomposition wherein the carbon returns to the atmosphere. ruminant animals turn it into methane rather quickly. other decomposers turn it back into CO2 and methane more slowly. And humans/lightning quickly release all that carbon via fire.

What we need to do on a large scale is hack that carbon cycle so the carbon drawn down by photosynthesis doesn't return to the atmosphere.

Biochar is the most obvious hack. pyrolytic (high heat/low oxygen fire) turns the biomass into 1000+ year stable carbon that can be added to the soil instead of returning to the atmosphere. 90+% of the carbon can be sequestered this way, with massive benefits to farmers and soil health.

Regenerative farming is another. The Marin Carbon Project has been doing studies for over 3 decades now and have proven that just 1/4" of compost spread on just 25% of California rangeland would sequester enough carbon to offset all of the state's emissions. (This is why I get upset about the inclusion of cow farts in carbon calculators. That's part of the natural carbon cycle. And by demonizing meat/livestock the green movement alienates the farmers who need to be on our side.)

There are 3 separate things to consider along with their lags, interactions with each other, and various feedback loops:

1. Greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere
2. Heat in the planet's systems (air, land, water)
3. Climate impacts.

As far as the atmosphere goes, the bulk of the human CO2 buildup is going to last for 300-1000yrs after we stop emitting without hacking the carbon cycle for active drawdown. That's one lag.

As long as the excess greenhouse gasses remain, heat is being actively trapped/added to the planetary system. Much of that heat goes into the oceans. (as does much of the CO2) but with deleterious impact of it's own: acidification, ecosystem impacts, weather & climate impacts, etc. So stopping emissions doesn't stop global warming. That's another lag.

And since the heat continues to build up - especially in the oceans (which will take a long time to be undone), climate impacts will continue to worsen. Another lag.

Then there's the interactions between all of those. for example, far too many people are unaware of the hard temperature limits of photosynthesis - the principle means by which plants draw down CO2 from the atmosphere. The laws of physics and chemistry mean that photosynthesis stops working once the ambient cell temperature reaches 100-110F in many plants (including most food crops).

And then there are the feedback loops. e.g. excessive heat evaporates water resulting in water vapor in the atmosphere. Water vapor is itself a very potent greenhouse gas resulting in more heat buildup in the terrestial system. Or rising global temperatures mean less snow and ice, so the albedo changes resulting in more heat absorbed by the planet, which is why arctic regions are warming 2.5x faster than equatorial regions.

All of these then impact the climate and weather in ever increasing and unpredictable ways like the ocean currents and jet stream slowing causing ever more drastic impacts.

While all this sounds dire, I do have hope and will now talk about things we can be doing that will have significant impacts on atmospheric CO2 levels which need to be reduced before anything can get better...

specifically, we're aiming to catch any bark beetles for identification. We had a scare in the late fall when we found some grubs in large rounds of Oak that were brought up here when we were splitting it. But it's really hard to get positive ID on grubs. All of that wood has been tarped and sealed up.

Additionally, a federal official said that California and New York are among the "next" for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement surge similar to the campaign in Minneapolis, with plans to embed hundreds of new ICE offices in Sacramento, Irvine, Santa Ana and Van Nuys, according to an explosive report by WIRED.

According to the WIRED report, ICE is leasing space in two Orange County cities — at an office park in Irvine and at the federal building in Santa Ana.

"This is news to me," Irvine Mayor Larry Agran told The Orange County Register. "We try to maintain some channels of communication with Border Patrol, with ICE, with Homeland Security... it's not easy to do. They're not very cooperative at all, and [not] letting us know what they're planning, what their activities consist of."

City officials are frequently unable to get details from ICE until a property sale is finalized.

The Irvine building, located at 2020 Main St., is situated near John Wayne Airport and several fast-casual restaurants. The Santa Ana Federal Building is located within blocks of a church and the OC Civic Center.

In Van Nuys — a neighborhood in Los Angeles — ICE is expanding offices at the James C. Corman federal building, that also houses offices for the IRS and Health and Human Services, the report said.

In San Diego, federal agents are allegedly leasing offices at the Edward J. Schwartz Courthouse and federal building, WIRED reported.

The team marked those signposts with flagging tapes and GPS points. From the sites, they analyzed 109 antler rubs, 37 scrapes, and 20 urinated spots. The light measurements revealed that these markers emit light in wavelengths that stand out against the surrounding environment when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

In an interview DeRose-Broeckert told us that deer are more sensitive to blue wavelengths and UV light than humans. A deer’s eye sensitivity picks up the wavelengths emitted by the glow, i.e., 450-460 nm and 537 nm ranges. Also, deer are most active at dawn and dusk, when the sunlight is low and visible light fades, making ultraviolet wavelengths more prominent.

Finally getting around to doing the math for a sand battery...

My panels operating voltage and current are 38.6v and 8.44A. That means for one panel the ideal heating element would be 4.6 ohms. For 2 panels in series, 9.1 ohms.

The little immersion heater coil I got says it's 1000W at 110VAC. Which would mean 9.1A, and therefore be about 12.1 ohms. But the ohmmeter says it's 17.6 ohms.

That might be a bit high for the panels. hard to say what power point that will produce. Will just have to try.

If I were to power from my 25.6V batteries, and it's really a 17.6ohm element, that would only be 1.4A, so only 37W. So that's out.

The only other option with this element would be to keep it AC, and have the FM80 aux output programmed to open a relay to power it once the batteries reach float. On most days that'll be by 1p at the latest, and that gives me 4 hrs at 1kW of heat going into the sand for 4kWh of heat storage or about 13650BTU. That would probably be meaningful.

So many people in #VanLife groups putting their lives at risk with their #Solar systems. The problem is inverter size vs system voltage. People are running 3500W and even higher wattage inverters on a 12V battery bank. That's 300A of current!! Not only do the wires need to be massive, expensive, and hard to negotiate around curves, but at those current levels you'd need to constantly monitor the torque on the connections and any heat build up in the wires.

Every connection is going to have some resistance. The higher the current the greater the voltage drop/heat build up through that resistance. This then causes thermal expansion/contraction which will loosen those connections resulting in even higher resistance and heat. Note the positive feedback loop. There's very little room for error at such high current levels. the same process can happen with a poor crimp.

12V is fine up to 2kW. 24V to 4kW. Anything above that and you should just go 48V.

Christopher Frison, a chief maintenance engineer at the hotel, arrived at Jones’ room about 5 p.m. on July 27, 2020, and knocked several times. Frison also called out “maintenance,” gave his name and waited, holding a plunger, he testified in court.

That’s when “Jones opened the door ready to defend himself and his room,” according to U.S. District Judge Adrienne Nelson’s 22-page opinion.

According to Frison, Jones was wearing a sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head when he “swung” the hotel door open, reached with his right hand behind his back and suddenly pointed a handgun at Frison’s chest. He said Jones held his gun in two hands, both arms outstretched.

“What the hell are you doing? What is going on?” Frison said he screamed. “All I could see was the white of his eyes. I could see the anger in his face. I wasn’t there as a threat. I was there as a maintenance worker.”

Frison testified that Jones pointed the gun at him for four to five seconds before uttering twice that he “f----- up.”

The judge found that Frison’s lawyers didn’t need to prove that Jones intended to shoot Frison or cause him physical injury. It didn’t matter if the gun was loaded or not, according to her opinion. It was clear Jones “intended” to place Frison in fear of imminent harm, she ruled.

A device exploded inside the Goldenson Building in Harvard’s Longwood medical campus early Saturday morning, according to a message from the Harvard University Police Department to University affiliates. The explosion took place on an area of the fourth floor of Goldenson, a Harvard Medical School building on the school’s main quad. An officer who responded shortly before 3 a.m. observed two individuals fleeing the building, according to the email sent by HUPD spokesperson Steven G. Catalano this afternoon. HUPD sent a subsequent email to Harvard affiliates shortly after 5 p.m. asking for assistance identifying two men, who they described as suspects. The images were captured on security footage. Both men are shown wearing sweatshirts with hoods and ski masks.

The Boston Police Department performed a sweep of the building and determined there were no additional devices in the building. No injuries were reported in relation to the incident.

For more than two-thirds of the products we analyzed, a single serving contained more lead than CR’s food safety experts say is safe to consume in a day—some by more than 10 times. “It’s concerning that these results are even worse than the last time we tested,” said Tunde Akinleye, the CR food safety researcher who led the testing project.

Nearly all the plant-based products CR tested had elevated lead levels, but some were particularly concerning. Two had so much lead that CR’s experts caution against using them at all. A single serving of these protein powders contained between 1,200 and 1,600 percent of CR’s level of concern for lead, which is 0.5 micrograms per day. Two others had between 400 and 600 percent of that level per daily serving.

The lead levels in plant-based products were, on average, nine times the amount found in those made with dairy proteins like whey, and twice as great as beef-based ones. Dairy-based protein powders and shakes generally had the lowest amounts of lead, but half of the products we tested still had high enough levels of contamination that CR’s experts advise against daily use.

as an interesting aside, the first movie to have Lakota spoken with subtitles was Dances with Wolves. But Costner was an ass to the native actors, so in some of the scenes the subtitles don't match with what's being spoken. Instead, they're ratting him out with stuff like "He makes us eat in a separate tent from the other actors" and "He hasn't paid us in 3 weeks."
