this has got to be the most tedious neverclanking I have ever goddamn seen. these whiners could have done something genuinely useful in all the effort they spent blithering. notably, they didn't spend any of the time fixing the documentation so it wouldn't have felt necessary in the first place.

was reading about rascal and maude today. a little annoyed all the surviving term rewrite systems are on java. (well maude isn't, but you have to shuffle the syntaxes yourself.)

my current ethos is largely the compiler should just be an interpreter that runs itself. the facilities are APIs inside that environment. thus compiling a file is just asking it to do some interpretations in a perfectly normal runtime. that gives you staged compiling (like macros, and terra/lua) as just a free consequence of the format, and with a little haranging you get incremental compilation out of just... having memoization.

refal (old soviet lang) tinkered with having everything be trees and rewrite patterns and still has some of the most succinct documentation on how to do a pattern rewrite engine (plt redex, maude et all are insufferable about being logic languages, though cordy has very readable papers on parsing and rewriting with TXL)

you can actually get absurdly far with fixed rulebook term rewrites, equality saturation, and one or two fixed passes (conversion to SSA and sparse constant propagation [which itself handles a number of important things inside like dead code elim] kinda do need to be their own things, though maybe if you already have tree rewriting and visitors like stratego this is easier to do)
