This really seems to be right. Ever since I read Charles Tilly's paper "War Making and State Making as Organized Crime" (1985), I see nation-states as large-scale protection rackets thus criminal enterprises. That the so-called "United States of America" has an open criminal as its "leader," makes perfect sense. We don't need nation-states and never did. Again reading about other cities and weather, I'm reminded that dewpoints have also changed here in the middle part of Maryland.

In summers past, a dewpoint of 65F-68F or 18C-20C was uncomfortable but it was what you got with heat. Now, those dewpoints are quite often from 73F-75F or 22C-24C and sometimes even higher (I've seen 77F or 25C). The term "dank" has been used, somewhat humorously, to say how this feels on your skin. But such high dewpoints mean the air is very high in moisture and can be stifling.

I cannot recall having such high dewpoints until within the last ten years or so.

Reading about temps in other cities, I can say that, around Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay, September was a month I always looked forward to because it meant temps going to 90F or higher, 32C or higher, was very unlikely. That changed in September 2023 when I was shocked by a string of days that went into the mid or upper 90s. That showed me beyond a doubt that things were getting hotter. So, here we are after a pretty nice August overall, with temps going back up into the low 90s. More than forty years around here and this never used to happen.

What you say here is quite right and Grandin goes through the history of North, South, Central America, and the Caribbean islands from 1492 till now. In an interview, she said that one book that had really gotten her more into anarchy was David Graeber's "Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology."

This utterly delighted me because this book got me to thinking far more about anarchy, too!

Graeber's small book (he called it a "pamphlet") has led me to question everything we call "democracy" but also has led me to rethink how we look at history and past societies and people.

I really wish more people would read this. Even if you are not "into" anarchy, this will make you think about a lot of things that are being done today and whether or not they should be rethought or ditched altogether.

Many times I see "anarchy" and "barbarism" used as meaning chaos and mayhem (anarchy) and behavior that violates human rights or is violent (barbarism.) "Barbarians" were, in Roman times, likely the freest people in Europe. They lived in a state of anarchy, that is, they had no rulers or emperors, they lived freely and made their own decisions. Of course, the Romans hated this and treated barbarians as if they were primitive and backward when it was really the Romans who were behaving abominably toward other human beings. So, "barbarism" should be removed from any list of terms that have to do with violent or abusive behavior.

I was startled to find that the plunge in the number I used to see from many dozens to fewer than a dozen was caused by my new neighbors putting chemical treatments on their lawn. A colleague who used to run a nursery told me the chemicals kill the firefly larvae under the grass. I am more sad than angry about this. I sometimes laugh when I panic that my cellphone was left at home. When your car broke down out in the countryside in the 1960s, you walked to the nearest house and asked to use their telephone to call a garage. I met a young couple in our town that way. While I was waiting for the towtruck, they shared with me their lunch that they were eating outside on their lawn on a blanket. I have never forgotten how nice they were.

Many are saying we are voting to keep a "democracy." Yes, but what sort of "democracy" are we voting to keep? As some have reminded us, even the defeat of Trump does not mean the end of the fascist threat we all see much more clearly now. So, what to do? I say move towards direct democracy and away from competitive, "winners" and "losers" democracy. In the 1970s (I recall) one of the best things about Scientific American magazine was its illustrations. The colors were vivid, the artwork first class. The pictures could "pull" you into reading the article. That seems to be gone, and I still miss it.

As a boy in 1960s southwestern CT, my second-story bedroom looked over a large area of lawn and 3 fully mature elm trees. Those trees were beautiful and large enough to give shade even to my upper-story room in mid-summer. When they died (in the late 1960s), looking at the stumps that was all that was left of them was sad. I miss those trees even now and any chance that they can come back is a good sign for all of us. PS My best guess is those trees were planted in the 1920s but I don't know that for sure. I know they were planted because they were an exact distance from a stone wall that edged a garden below them.

One of the toughest things to deal with is when people you like insist on voting for Trump. What I noticed is that two of my colleagues and my boss had a real blind spot when it came to sociopathic behavior. One of our pilots was clearly a sociopath (it took me years to figure out what his strange behavior was all about), but when I tried to point out to them what he was doing, they didn't see it at all. Same with Trump--they just couldn't seem to understand how really dangerous this guy is. This fellow in Ohio may start to see Trump with different eyes now. What a story.

Yes! I know...but after days of over 95F/35C temps here on the East Coast, anything lower than that is okay! I always accepted that global heating is real, but two really bad spells of near-100F temps last September and last June woke me up to how bad it's going to get. I don't know what it's going to take to get action going on this, but it is going to get uglier.

"Christianity" is a political ideology. As such, it is not and cannot be anarchic. Anarchy or direct democracy is a process, a way of deciding what problems we need to deal with and then to come up with ways to do that but by consensus not ideology or hierarchy, that is, "top-down" rulings. In one business jet I flew (as a pilot), there were "rails" like a sled underneath the fuselage. They were made of Kevlar and the reason for them was, if the landing gear failed to come down, the jet could be landed on the Kevlar rails and the fuselage (and its contents) would be largely or even totally unharmed. I am not aware whether or not this has ever happened in real life, but what a great idea.
