Not a lot of harvesting in the garden this year but it's adequate. A bit of cooler weather has helped. Some big cucumbers, orange tomatoes from a volunteer, zucchini and squash, and a bumper crop of marigolds... I've actually cut out a dozen or more of them from that bed but the peppers are recovering from whatever they had going on too late to do anything now. Saving some pole bean seeds too!

Last week I noticed my phone had popped out of it's case a little bit so I pulled it out and cleaned the case, was wiping off the phone and something didn't feel right... the back was pushed off in the middle! So I ordered a new phone and and then decided to get a battery for the old one for a spare. Took about an hour but the back was already half off. I didn't put new adhesive on the back. LineageOS on this one, GrapheneOS on the new one.

I almost died from chicken thighs. I was getting things out of the freezer and bumped some chicken thighs on the top shelf, put them back, finished pulling out the bag of shrimp, then proceeded to pull a chicken out of the bottom drawer as the frozen chicken thighs tried to escape again and landed on my head. 💥

Not as bad as the time when I had a 6 inch log over my head using it as a lever to rock the bumper that was stuck on a ledge of dirt.. and it broke. That rung my bell.

I couldn't see it with my safety squinting eyes (wind ash) ...

I couldn't see it with my safety squinting eyes (wind ash) but I see the sun is in my 'photo of the sun'. The darkness really messes with you, makes you think it's later in the day than it is, then you drive through a wall of smoke and hey, it's still clear and sunny out, then you turn around and go back into the smoke.

I noticed some of the cabbages had firm heads already so I picked a small one. It was almost 3 lbs, or 1.3 kg. Made a cabbage pie with half of it. Shredded cabbage, onion, carrot, parmesan, cream cheese, tomato, oregano, salt, pepper, 3 eggs, and mozzarella on top.

I gave the cucumbers some breathing room. A pot of beets is cooking. There was a white one, that I verified did smell like a beet, and some of the striped ones, along with all the ones that are suppose to be Detroit dark red beets. There's more but these were the biggest ones shading the cucumbers.

I've been using rayon or cellulose fiber cloths folded up this year. The swedish cloths were used in the past but they're quite a bit more expensive. I do put them between the boxes. It makes for extra work I guess since I'm not really pulling frames out of the lower box for any reason most of the time.

Yesterday I added boxes the big swarm that was caught and the small swarm that moved into the bait hive that I put in a nuc. I also put Oxalic OAE pads in both of those hives and gave them both a jar of food since it was bare foundation added.

I also saw the really fast skinny snake for more than a few seconds. It's probably a Western yellow-bellied racer. I've seen it by these hives a a few times and down the hill by the shed too. No pic.

The pot that has this fireweed in it. It's on ground level with the raised bed filled around it. For whatever reason, and since I've known what fireweed is, I've always thought this was an annual that came up from seed on ground lacking vegetation. Now I know it is a perennial that has a mass of roots, which are actually pretty deep, and they spread. I guess I'm testing the "it doesn't compete with other things" claims this year in my cucumber bed.

I made some connectors for the 11 mm plastic coated steel stakes that have the little bumps on them for holding tape or ties so I could create support for the tomatillo plants without tying the stakes together. Seems to work good and should hold enough weight.I cut some of the stakes in half and plugged the ends. One more layer to add on top and it's done.

I thought about beekeeping today. I need to put the bait hive bees in a nuc and it's been cool so they probably would like to be fed and I need them in the nuc to do that. I have one or two leaky jars of goldenrod honey to feed... *doing other things* oh *sticky things* oh leaking honey... Now I'm warming up 40 lbs of honey so I can refill jars not quite so full they push the lid off when they crystallize which I suspect allowed them to absorb some moisture and then drip out.

A rainy day for the garden. The bok choy shown is a bit weird. They were the extra plants left in very small pots and indoors grew bigger than the transplants, then I divided them to plant and they're still growing faster than the rest. They are on the warmest side of the bed so this might be a case of warmer soil which would be the case for their time in the small pots too. The garlic is getting big, 4 pole beans are up outdoors, and a little flower next to a cabbage.

When the first cucumber sprouted I looked at the bottom of the pot by chance and noticed there was already a root poking out! The hibiscus has another flower ready to open, the other fell off the same day I noticed it so I guess I missed it for a day or two.

It's a little sunny in the morning, then shady underneath the white spruce tree (yes, it shoudn't grow here), and then a few hours of blazing hot sun in the afternoon. It's probably not colder in the winter but more exposed to any north wind. This will only be for new hives, too close to move existing ones easily.

I planted tomatoes, 2 eggplants, and 1 double tomatillo today. The tomato bed is getting carrots planted with them this year, and the other bed will be filled out with some basil. I have one cherry tomato to put in the ground, and maybe another tomatillo next to it and finish out that row with Kentucky blue pole beans. Peppers will go out soon but no hurry since they have a little bit of extra space now indoors. Saw the first spouts of cucumbers and melons today too.

It was 49F / 9.4C low last night near the garden and forecast to be the same or warmer tonight so I set a couple of trays of tomatoes out to make some room indoors. They're setting in the newest raised bed that I just filled up with dirt from a hole I'm digging and some chicken compost. The bed will probably get 2 eggplants, maybe a tomatillo, and some basil. I'm only planting 10 of these tomato plants.

I was a bit worried about the Campari tomatoes after I potted them up since I was using a new bag of potting mix that was different brand. Some of them were not looking good but they all started growing and some are looking pretty good. There's always the chance the potting mix has some tomato killing thing or disease in it but I think it's ok. The eggplants are looking good, and I saw a plum starting to push up.

I've been thinking about where my wax melter is off and on for weeks so I don't spend a day looking for it when I need it. I hadn't been able to come up with a place I put it for sure until today. It's nice to find something when you're not looking for it. It's also nice when past you knows future you and leaves a note.

I assembled 20 deep frames today, took my time, didn't feel like using the 10 frame jig, so I just did them one by one.

What should you do when you have a bunch of broken $0.50 sprinklers? Spend several hours designing a replacement part which includes a stainless steel dowel. The winner was the 9th saved version but some of the versions had modifications. How is it different from the others? It copies the original design so it was slightly more complicated to make. A sweeping lofted square curve of sorts with a 135 degree bend in it.

This is the best scenario since most of the foragers would of went back to the other hive. I started seeing some new foragers in the last few days. Drones started flying 6 days ago.

The first radish is up, it's a French breakfast heirloom. They were planted 13 days ago along with the sugar snap peas, arugula, spinach, beets, and other radish types.

There have been 58 (F) growing degree days based on a 43F base mean temp here this year, which is more of a fruit tree blossom thing at that base temp, but it's what I keep track of. Accumulated degrees above that daily mean temp base.

Picked all the winter squash today. 41 acorn squash that weighed 52 lbs / 23.5 kg. 8 butternut squash 17 lbs / 7.7 kg. Not all the acorn are probably ripe enough but they'll used up first. They were all washed and sprayed with white vinegar and sitting somewhere warm for a couple of weeks before they go off to the cold place.

Picked the first watermelon the other day. It was the one that first set this spring. The tendril was dry, the previous and past tendril was dry and brown, the yellow spot looked good, and it was just a little bit red inside and had no taste other than textured water. 🤣

Plenty more to pick in the coming days. The chickens don't let them go to waste, the 11 year old Australorp likes them.

Pulled a couple of eggplants out today, they were wilting from unknown, both on the north ends of their different beds so maybe just too wet or perfect conditions for whatever they have. They're on the burn pile now and I treated the area and other eggplants with Soil Blast.

Catching up on garden things. Skipped some days of picking and didn't take a photo of buckets full of tomatoes or eggplants. So here's Sunday, Saturday, Thursday, and Wednesday's harvest.

I picked all the Red Marconi peppers that were susceptible to sunburn plus they were as ripe as they'd get anyway. There were a couple of cucumbers too. Too busy/lazy Monday to pick anything.

This is probably the last blueberries and raspberries to be picked this year. Not many left and not needing more. It's going to get hotter again but there were about 10 days with below 90F temps that were good for the berries.

I wonder if they didn't get some sort of leaf disease going from all that rain you had. Rust taking hold and then the heat can cause the scorched leaves. I'm not sure about the fruit drop but it makes me wonder if there is enough boron available. It's deficient here so it gets applied yearly but I know that's not the case everywhere.

Zucchini and Bell pepper update. There might be a pollinated zucchini, or courgette, now. The one that wasn't isn't soft so it stays on the plant for now. I've picked some sunburned peppers but others aren't so they continue to grow bigger. They need more basil and marigold shade from the sun! Yes, more basil in this bed.

Tomato, basil, and tomatillo update. It's all growing. ;) I've pruned some of the lower parts of some tomatoes but I'm leaving them kind of bushy on the trellis. Lots of flowers on the tomatillo. Lots and lots of basil which I've been letting flower then dead heading it. There are runner beans on both posts in the raised bed and they've made it to the top of the trellis.

The Santa Rosa plum air layering has made roots! It's been 11 weeks since it was started. It should make a standard sized tree if it survives. I put it in a pot for now so I can be kept wet and out of the hot sun if necessary and figure out where I want to plant it.

It will be sweet cherry season soon. The price right now looks like $5 a pound for typical bargain mass market cherries domestically. The worker gets paid $0.21 per pound. They're probably the cheapest cost to cherry production and yet the most important. The worker has to pick more than 24 lbs. of cherries to be able to afford themselves to be able to buy just one pound. I say it that way because the employer here or their minions help a lot of long term residents maintain fake identity, and many have been replaced by H-2A visa workers. Some years back, employer got a wrist slap, and overnight a lot of people had new names. In other words they won't help to change the system or assist directly these people in becoming legal. Peppers, eggplants, basil cuttings, and potted marigolds that haven't been replanted yet.

I'm actually really impressed how good the peppers are growing this year. Even the pathetic looking Jalapenos grew out of their root bound funk and look pretty good.

I put some of the basil cuttings I didn't pot up directly in the soil and that seems to be working ok so far.

The melons are all doing good and the summer squash have got past their wilting stage but there is still some wilting on the winter squash if I don't give them a good soaking of water in the morning as it starts to warm up.

I finally got around to planting carrots in a pot. Nantes Half Long.The bottom soil is pretty dry so it's soaking in a tub overnight. I picked up the potted marigolds that were spread about the garden, I have 10 feet of them, or 22 plus 1 tomato volunteer and 1 clump of oregano. The two squash beds are ready for planting with most of the lumpy goose manure having soaked up the water and softened.
