I'm not sure, but don't most Ubi devices have onboard traffic filtering and shaping, as well as multicast control, all enabled by default? I've had several devices over the years that rely on stupidly outdated methods to do their ZTP, and modern traffic management can get in the way of that.
In my experience, TP-Link's defaults are closer to leaving the front door wide open all the time, so that's probably why it worked.

One thing I was thinking of though, is that the neutral has to be *somewhere* - no one runs just the hot line on it's own. If you're able to get into the wall around the switch box, and (with the breaker off obviously) cut and bring it into the box, you might be able to pigtail it into the switch. I realize I'm late to the party on this, but after reading all the other replies, here's the simple answer for all North American wiring: NO.

Black (hot) and white (neutral) MUST be present at all 120v devices (240v is different here) that will draw power, because neutral is the return path from hot and circuits must always be a closed loop (hence the name circuit).

Traditional switches don't need one because they're literally just breaking the connection to shut off power. Smart switches DO need neutral because they are themselves a device drawing power. They'll still switch the load later in the chain by disrupting the hot line, but to operate it needs that white neutral so it can power itself.

There used to be an old timey hack of using ground as neutral (they're similar in NA wiring but not actually the same), but this is no longer permitted in code and can prove dangerous for future electricians.

The whole point of the tags is for filtering, and it doesn't really help if something that, for example, should be labeled as "politics" or "US Pol" is instead marked as "bash the cheeto" or similar.
