I literally had a brief conversation with a maths prof about this yesterday, he was also naming Tao.

And I was like... the *number* of papers published was never the goal. It was perhaps something that worked surprisingly well as a measure of skill, for some time, but it wasn't the goal. Neither is the goal to "stumble upon" new "truths" no matter how useful they are. Honestly, usefulness can go straight in the bin for me.

It's about what you already named: Understanding. Perhaps joy. We will, ultimately, know more things in the future than now. But this doesn't mean the future is better because of this. The point is to strive for more. A world where everything is solved and "doable" is depressing.

While professionally I achieved a lot in the direction 15yo me went for, more than they'd perhaps even anticipated... I now actually can look in the mirror and recognize myself. And like what I see. I had a terrible hot take that I won't post publicly. But the actual underlying issue is less of a hot take and actually a real problem:

There's no relevant enby fashion or "norms" (not even in a good way). Like, there's men's fashion and women's fashion. As an enby you can try and mix, DIY lean into something that's looking more beast than human, go wild. But: It's hard to /pass/ as an enby. It's hard to find a /style/ that matches your aesthetic that's not actually gendered. Often you are still regarded as a quirky version of your AGAB.

And I find that depressing. Few enbies pull that off, while maintaining a certain aesthetics that's completely ambiguous but not leaning into either gender. I mostly gave up on that tbqh, it's very femby vibes for me (despite leaning a bit more to futch than hyperfemme lately) but it's kinda sad that, to be regarded as enby, you basically have to plaster your whole body with the flag.

Even worse that the colorscheme of the enby flag is one of the worst. Okay, this /is/ a hot take, but a much tamer one than the original. Plus, it's objectively true.

It's flip side is a cynic commentary on security, and a true one at that: If your neighbor is not secure, you don't need to be either. This is still true if you're getting pwned. When everyone's getting hacked regularly, society will accept this new reality. Only the defense sector will still care for security. We've seen similar developments in different industries: Fast fashion isn't an adequate replacement for garment that stands the test of time. But it's getting impossible to buy good clothes, even if you want to. But also with other goods: If everyone produces low quality items, it's financially more reasonable to do the same.

2. Centralization. Coz we won't do the right thing and reduce complexity, we need to find a way to make complexity "secure": Cloud, Big5, etc. Corps that have the resources to host an Exchange server securely... or in compliance with regulations. Every tool you do not let a big house host is a liability. Not coz they're necessarily more secure, but because nobody will blame you if something gets wrong. We had that with "buying IBM" once.

I don't even need AI specifically to argue for that. The time-to-exploit has been dropping forever. We've built better catalogs and more versatile infrastructure and complex automations. It's very clear that this includes vuln research as well.

We had this already with static analysis hitting the field. We answered with "shift left": Building security into the dev process, since the earlier you do it, the less issues you'll end up with. Every step earlier has more downstream impact.

We've finally reached the stage where security as part of your design & architecture is not only best practice but becoming a hard requirement. Our automations (including LLMs) pushed us there and we need to deal with the outcome.

Or should. Because I'm a cynic and I've seen what's happened, I doubt that engineering will follow through with this. I see two paths and we'll move along both, and I don't like either: Acceptance and few centralized Oligopols.

Das Absurde ist ja auch, dass manchen der ganze Hokuspokus durchaus hilft. Nicht, weil das medizinisch helfen würde, sondern, weil super viele schulmedizinische Ärzte einfach überlastet sind mit der Anzahl an Patient*innen und sich daher keine Zeit nehmen. Geht man zu Heilpraktiker*innen fühlt man sich oft fast wie privat versichert: Einem wird zugehört, man hat Zeit, es werden einem auch nicht Symptome als belanglos ausgeredet (kenne ich bspw. von vielen ME/CFS Betroffenen). Aber die Lösung darauf darf nicht Hokuspokus bleiben, sondern ein gutes medizinisches System, das funktioniert und Menschen ernst nimmt.

Anderer Aspekt ist natürlich die Hoffnung für Menschen die an Krankheiten erkrankt sind die aktuell als hoffnungslos gelten. Hoffnung ist unglaublich heilsam und gibt Energie um weiter zu machen. Und wenn die Schulmedizin korrekt sagt, "geht nicht" aber einem die Anthros sagen "naja, haben Sie aber Mal probiert Heilerde zu fressen?" dann verstehe ich, dass man das probiert. Aber auch hier: Dafür muss es bessere Lösungen geben.

There's one thing that I can somewhat, only a bit, accept as an excuse for talking about NextCloud in particular: It operates on CalDAV Standards and the Tasks part of that ... sucks badly. Like, terrible. I've not been happy with any of CalDAV synced Tasks because not only is support shoddy, but for exactly the reason you give.

However, NextCloud could – as any one of the stakeholders – try to push for something different or find ways to enable this use case better.

Case in point: What do people use for such tasks? Alarms are... hard to manage. Calendar entries are overwhelming. I try paper but I forget too often.

Thinking back to #39C3 and the friendly creatures who I've met. There's a thing that I struggle with, still, and that's... randomly saying nice things to each other. I do this far too rarely. So this goes to out to all of you:

Honestly I find their texts among the best to read. I attribute that partially to the rather strict editorial style. It's also just breaking with the norm of sloppy texts and I feel the care that has been put into every sentence. I notice that I, the reader, still have to do my job with reading the article. But they helped me immensely by doing their job well, too. Which means I prefer the sometimes rather long essays of the NY over a short article by any other magazine.

It's still pretentious tho, but I mean, look at their logo. I think they know it is and it's become almost a self-ironic thing by now.

Gebrauchtgeräte sind schon ziemlich maximal nachhaltig. Alle meine Pixels waren/sind gebraucht. Die Pixels sind auch okay-ish reparierbar, aber bei mir halten sie einfach auch lange (oft sogar länger als die Fairphones da besser verarbeitet).

Und solange FP & Co. es nicht schaffen Sicherheitspatches lange und zeitnah bereitzustellen sehe ich die auch nicht als besonders "nachhaltig" an. Ein gebrauchtes Handy mit Graphene lebt gerne Mal 7 Jahre mit immer dem aktuellen Sicherheitsstand. Da kommt niemand heran.

Btw. auf ein Pixel Graphene zu installieren ist *sehr* einfach/angenehm. Gibt einen browserbasierten Web-Installer, einfach ein paar Knöpfe drücken und fertig. Viel besser als (früher) bei LineageOS/CyanogenMod & Co.

Today's Linux tip: Most GUI/non-server(!) distros default to KillUserProcesses=yes by now¹, so SSH-ing to a desktop and opening a tmux/screen to do something will still kill the processes when SSH drops. In case you don't want this behavior for a single command, you can just do something like:

This will persist throughout the whole user session.

If you also want this to persist over a complete log-out (i.e., even logging out on the GUI), you may need to `loginctl enable-linger`, too.

¹ For good reason, it's what most people would expect. Yes, it breaks existing behavior but if we want Linux to be on the desktop, it shouldn't behave like a server running a GUI. If you need different behavior, have a look at `systemd-analyze cat systemd/logind.conf` and check the files you need to touch to change this.

This includes FLINTA* Hackspaces or events, demonstrations and sports. And ultimately kept me away from there for longer than it should or still keep me away. And this isn't only me.

When going to those places for the first time(s), I always dress very femme out of safety. I know that I'd have had problems in some of them if I didn't. Once they know me, I can de-cloak and actually go there as "me" (which /may/ include being very femme). But I don't always look very trans or femme and I especially don't want to.

Because in the end the policy is always just a different wording for "no cis dudes". Which then becomes "do you look non-dude enough". Which openly discriminates against some people of all the above groups in FLINTA*.

I know cis women who do pass for cis male, although they tend to have the least problems with that getting rejected here.

But there are cis dudes who are inter. And other inter men, who aren't cis but easily pass for it. Do you want to check a person's medical record?
