Art shapes space exploration just as space exploration shapes art—and that’s certainly true in the case of the Red Planet. Even as talk of a future crewed mission intensifies and the prospect seems more feasible, art continues to buoy such ideas and their implications, both real and fanciful.

Check out some Mars-themed artwork, including one from our own Dr. Pascal Lee: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2622471123

#science #space #art #sciart

#PPOD: Over the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, winds can whip around the globe relatively unimpeded by land. Intrepid sailors termed these southern latitudes the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties, and Screaming Sixties on account of the strong prevailing winds. When those winds encounter a barrier like an island, the disruption in airflow can be beautiful. One impediment, shown here, is remote Peter I Island. #PPOD: These pareidolia-inducing clouds are a pair of nebulae called Gum 10 and Gum 11. Visible mostly from the southern hemisphere, they are part of a larger complex, in which stars are born. Gum 10 is the brightest cloud that occupies most of the image, whereas Gum 11 is the fainter, detached cloud to the bottom-left. For decades, SETI Institute scientists have turned to Earth’s most extreme environments to understand how life persists at the edge of what biology allows. Now, scientists have revived microscopic worms frozen in Siberian permafrost for roughly 46,000 years, revealing how life can survive extreme cold through a state of cryptobiosis. Simon Steel spoke with evolutionary biologist Philipp Schiffer about the discovery.

Learn more: https://www.seti.org/news/life-after-ice/

#science

#PPOD: This is a montage of New Horizons images of Jupiter and its volcanic moon Io, taken during the spacecraft’s Jupiter flyby in early 2007. The Jupiter image is an infrared color composite taken by the spacecraft’s near-infrared imaging spectrometer on Feb. 28, 2007. The infrared wavelengths used highlight variations in the altitude of the Jovian cloud tops, with blue denoting high-altitude clouds and hazes, and red indicating deeper clouds. #PPOD: Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) is brightening fast! Discovered in January by the Mt Lemmon Survey, it swings closest to Earth on October 21 and reaches perihelion on November 8—about 79 million kilometers from the Sun. Currently around magnitude 5.4, it’s visible in binoculars below the Big Dipper and may soon be visible to the unaided eye.
