Thank you to everyone who has donated over the years to help me cover the costs of genomic.social. The community that has been built here is still going strong thanks to all of you.

Currently, it costs ~$274USD/month for the hosting. Donations have covered around 1/3rd of this cost, and I have been covering the rest which unfortunately can't continue. I am currently ~$2,200USD (~3,076AUD) in the red.

I have a feeling it's not going to be enough. As the wording of the legislation and some of he senate estimates enquiries, it seems that even if an u16 and their parent circumvents the ban, it is the social media provider who is at fault.

Like when you go into a store and steal something, the shopkeeper gets charged for theft cause they should have stopped them...

Well the u16 ban for social media legislation passed in my country today. When it comes into law within a year, the government can find social media companies $50 million for breaching it, with no fault levelled at kids or parents that try to circumvent it.

So far they have not mentioned mastodon in the ban but this is not good for me personally.

I'll let you know how this will impact this instance as I find out.

Like with any social media, please be mindful of spam/scam accounts that have links to unsafe websites and malware.

I delete the accounts when I find them but if you ever see them please report them (even if you are not sure but looks suspicious). Even if on another instance, I can at least block them from our side keeping all of us safe.

I'd rather get more reports than miss something.
