Y'all backup your old USB drives.

I just found my old music stick from when I used to DJ is pretty fucked up, so a bunch of files are inaccessible. I guess flash drives aren't expected to last forever, and this one got beat up pretty good, but nonetheless, if it were something actually important, I'd be pretty sad/mad about it. In this case, it's songs I can buy again (a lot of it came from eMusic when eMusic was different, so I can't just download them again) and Mixxx playlists I don't care much about.

There's an interesting thing I've noticed about myself with the onslaught of hard-to-read AI prose seemingly everywhere. I am historically a rules lawyer (in my head, not out loud) about grammar and spelling, silently judging folks for ugly or clunky prose. AI writing has softened my position on this issue. LLMs write with excellent grammar, but they have no intention, so they can't ever really get to the point. They don't want anything, so there is no point to anything they say. They are generally bad writers because of it.

My fixation when reading now is on whether there is a clear point, something the author wants me to get, not whether the grammar is nice or the spelling is good.

I think this is telling me that I, and you, shouldn't use AI even to edit and definitely not to write. I suspect it makes your writing worse even while making it more grammatically defensible to an English teacher.

If one applies a year of daily effort to a problem using traditional programming methods, you can get pretty far and do pretty cool things. Perhaps multiplying the fruits of that effort by 3x or 4x or more opens doors to far more ambitious projects. I've certainly embarked on projects I wouldn't have attempted before, due to lack of free time.

But, I fear what people want from software is changing to a degree where I simply don't understand what it looks like.

Does it matter if I make a really cool synthesizer plugin if people just want to tell Suno "make me a song"? Or, even, does it matter if I spent six months working on something, refining the UI/UX, testing different algorithms, analyzing, etc. when it can then be cloned in a weekend by someone wielding a model?

It's a fun super power. But, it has implications we haven't even begun to reckon with.

Another fucking stray that I've gotta be responsible for because if I don't nobody else will. She's terrible at having her picture taken and is confused by other dogs. I guess I'll have to log into nextdoor in the morning. I hate nextdoor people, but maybe there's a rescue that'll take her in so she doesn't have to go to the shelter. I'll get her checked for a chip, but I have a 0% success rate doing that. And, the AI companies aren't necessarily making it easy to see what's going on in there. But, there's a ton of published research. All of this sprung from Attention Is All You Need from the inventors of the transformer architecture, which is where they hinted at the possibilities. They were working on translation, but found that the fancy auto-complete could also answer questions.

The earliest models were prompted along the lines of continuing a conversation, with the prompt (question) being the first part of the conversation, and since every turn includes sending the whole conversation back to the model, you're just seeing auto-complete over and over with the text being completed getting longer and longer.

The illusion is compelling and the results amazing (I'm fascinated by the technology), but it really does a number on some folks.

I've built a does almost nothing agent harness for running benchmarks, and even the itty bitty models are able to make plans and perform complicated stuff. There are harnesses that make them work better for longer horizon stuff (with plan mode, todo list tools etc.), but the gibberish is thinking.

If you watch the reasoning traces of the smaller models, it's possible to see what's actually happening to some degree. The implementation of LLMs involves cycling through all the weights (or a subset of it in MoE models) for every next word. It's fancy auto-complete, but trained to keep repeating while they're figuring things out.

The early transformer models didn't reason, only finish sentences. But with some additional training they got to answering questions and then agentic use becomes a whole conversation with itself...asking the questions and finding out the answers with tools, etc.

The best models can do everything with minimal tools/harness.

But, at $10,000 for two Sparks, I'd rather buy a couple of decades of heavy usage directly from the source, where it will be blazing fast, have larger context, and run at full intelligence.

The stuff that runs on 32GB is too dumb to be worth using for coding, IMHO. Gemma 4 31B and Qwen 3.6 27B are very good for their size and for some specific use cases are great (very good chat bot and research bot, pretty good security auditors and triage models, great for classification and summarization tasks, Gemma 4 12B is a beast for vision tasks and runs on almost anything).

And, I've mostly gotten over any illusions I had that all the artisanal handcrafted code I'd written over the decades lead up to a few months ago has any more intrinsic value to users than the code I've written since with AI assistance (or, more recently with me merely steering the agent and reviewing the code most of the time).

Whether I like the situation we're in is pretty much irrelevant to the circumstances that require me to use them or choose a different career.

A lot of things I expected to be true (model collapse, the runaway spending and debt would consume the major players, taking it all down with it, etc.) didn't come to pass. Synthetic data makes stronger models, not psychotic ones. Even if the debt consumes Anthropic and OpenAI, the open models that exist today would be enough to disrupt. We can't go back.

But, I'm seeing a lot of smart, formerly pretty normal, people getting real weird real fast after getting on board the AI hype train. The understanding many people have of what the technology is doing and what its limits are is often quite far from reality.

I suspect that if you strip it of the personality and memory-like capabilities, it's probably safer to use. And, maybe more useful.

If you use AI, I think for your safety you should turn off the "memory" features. I'm becoming more confident that's where a lot of the AI psychosis comes from. Nobody would think these things are their friend without the bolted-on memory. LLMs don't have memory and can't have memory in their current implementation. They are instructed on each new chat to query a database about past conversations, so they "know" you. They don't want to know anything about you, they're following instructions.

I could burn a lot more tokens, probably enough to cost a lot more, but I wouldn't get useful software out of it if I did because I wouldn't be paying close enough attention to what it's doing.

Github Copilot used to be a cheap way to do it ($10), but they've changed to token billing.

Their big boxes are sold out months in advance, or completely unavailable maybe until a new Mac Mini and Mac Studio release that I think has been pushed to October due to RAM prices. They've made a fortune on selling a box that people can run big models on locally for close to the best price/performance across the board.

And, every Strix Halo box that comes along sells out immediately.

Models you can run on a Strix Halo or even something with 64GB of VRAM or unified memory (a beefy Mac) are competitive with frontier models of two years ago. Gemma 4 is excellent in the two bigger versions. Qwen 3.6 27B just came out today, and from a benchmark perspective is even better. I'm just starting to test it.

Either runs comfortably, if slowly, unquantized on 128GB or at 8-bits on 64GB (8-bits is barely lossy).

I get so mad about `nano` being the default editor on Debian/Ubuntu, as it's so disorienting to not get vim (and hard to use). Now, it's the default editor on Fedora, but only if the `nano-default-editor` package is installed...which I guess is automatically installed by the installer? I sure as hell didn't install it.

nano is also seemingly configured in git somehow as the default editor, which is just hurtful.

The mid-range iPad I bought has a faster CPU than the top-of-the-line Ryzen I have in my desktop on single-core performance. This is absurd. The Ryzen CPU alone cost more than the tablet. A tablet's got no business being fast.

In other news, I ordered a refurb Macbook Pro M5. I'm mad about how much it costs to get 32GB of RAM, but the performance advantage is crazy. It'll even find those bugs in code it just wrote, if told to do so. The horror is that most vibe coders don't understand that the common bugs, including common security bugs, are gonna creep in and you're going to have to hunt them and protect against them.

I've come to the conclusion that the job of a vibe coders is policing the AI via overwhelming use of verification tools.

I can't really say I'm happy about it, but given a competent operator, it produces quite good, if a little verbose, code that works the first time most of the time. It writes better and more tests than I've found most human coders do, it often includes accessibility markup without being asked (another thing human coders simply don't do), and it documents its work.

VICE has settable CPU speed, but it can't go that anywhere near fast, even on my desktop, which I just recently put roughly the fastest desktop CPU available in (9950X3D). But, I guess if you're careful about how you handle timing, maybe you can make things work on both. I know most games choke or are unplayable on an accelerated C64 because they don't run at a human friendly speed.

It's been in my cart for weeks. But, I really like the idea of making games and tools that take advantage of a big REU (which I guess VICE and TheC64 can also have, so it's not unique to C64U, and folks who make software that uses it can expect a sort of broad set of possible users). It's almost entirely unmapped territory. This demo was another contributor to the decision. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK8U_sS5ld4

Miami elected a Democratic mayor. Miami is a weird as hell political place, so I don't want to read too much into it. Since I'm using sprites for the little guys, it seems like it would be, as they have pixel-precise movement. How to maintain the world map (not the visual one, the one that determines behaviors) is breaking my brain, though. Much to think about.

It'd fit on a floppy, even a Commodore 1541 floppy (though only barely, and probably not actually, as there's probably some overhead). I was a little worried about Qt Quick, because they apparently added JavaScript and something like HTML to Qt to make QML work, and I was concerned that would lead to bloat, and I'm sure it did, but not much.

It's almost not terrible. At this rate, I'll have a reasonably functional sprite editor sometime this weekend. (Yes, I should just use Spritemate or one of the several other existing sprite editors, but I've been hankering to learn some modern C++ and also make small/fast/compact desktop apps and this is a fun way to do so, while building something I might actually use.)

I have been right but too early many times.

e.g. I divested from crypto in 2018, for many reasons, but for the point of this toot, bc it was obvious it was all a scam, siphoning money from retail investors to the folks controlling the exchanges (and thus the trading prices, since wash trading was and is rampant). But, that was way too early. The bottom still hasn't fallen out, and the scam is still not obvious to everyone.

Is it too early to sell all index funds that predominantly hold tech?
