I understand perfectly. I spent a couple of months on Mastodon in early 2023, before switching to Nostr.

I was able to observe closely what you are sharing and, in turn, understand the 'brainwashing' that is constantly applied to the community there—as is typical on any centralised social network—through moderation, censorship, and restrictive terms of service. This is especially true in this specific context: Mastodon + Bluesky.

Regarding what I proudly follow—let us say, the #vegan hashtag—the profiles of many of these individuals appear here on Nostr, often without them even realising it. From this vantage point, one might assume they are genuinely interacting with the person: liking posts, writing messages, and so forth. However, those users never have their LN-Address activated.

Some Nostr clients even tag them with a 'flag' indicating a “remote profile”. There are so many of them on those specific clients (Mastodon + Bluesky), and it is a genuine shame that those of us who truly interact here on the protocol remain 'so few'.

Thank you, regardless, for sharing this and bringing it to light. There is no frustration or hard feelings here.

Apparently, the responsibility for monitoring this falls under the purview of either Alex Gleason’s team or Derek Ross’s team.
Furthermore, if a user—or even you—logs onto Mastodon to raise awareness of the cause by showcasing its potential (such as the possibility of interacting with the zap's we have here on Nostr), they will be blocked almost instantly. This suppression is executed either by automated bots or by the teams themselves. 🛑

A chronicle of a garden cultivated in hostile ground

‘Can I pay someone in stones, when I ought to have paid in seeds?’

I. The Question

The question was born on an ordinary Tuesday, when I opened a bank transfer that was incomplete, late, in a currency that melts between the fingers. A third partial salary. A payment that arrives the way dirty water arrives through a broken pipe: enough to survive by, too little to feel that someone, on the other side, honours the agreement.

And so the question: ‘Can I pay someone in stones, when I ought to have paid in seeds?’

Stones are heavy. They pile up. They take up room. Germinate — and I use the word loosely — is not in their nature. With stones one can raise a wall against the cold, yes. With stones one gets by. But sowing a future with stones is an impossible task.

Seeds, by contrast, are promises. Time condensed. The possibility that something living may rise from nothing, multiply, and hold up others.

I asked for seeds. I was handed stones. And the deepest part of it is that the one who hands them over cannot tell the difference.

II. The Garden in the Jungle

Six years ago I planted a garden from afar. A garden of ideas. A property called Avalon Tulum, on a stretch of coast the world knows as Tulum, though those of us who live it from the inside know it for something else: a jungle dressed up as paradise, where everything grows fast and everything rots just as fast.

The project was more than a roof. It was a node. A point on the map where the circular economy, decentralisation, and the philosophy of my own manifesto — the Bucéfalo Manifesto (it will open in this window)— would cease to be words on a document and become living practice. Seeds, quite literally. Digital seeds, seeds of sovereignty, seeds of community.

In the early years the garden held. There were storms, there were blights — a previous managing agency that left debts and wear — but the soil answered. The balance, however fragile, was there.

Until the soil itself began to turn poisonous.

III. The Keeper Who Speaks Another Language

Towards the end of February 2026 a new keeper arrived. We call him the manager, because administrator sounded too cold, and owner would have been out of place. Six months on, we signed an agreement before witnesses. A document that, in theory, granted him full use of the property in exchange for renovating it, managing it and — an unavoidable condition — settling the rent in seeds. In the currency that gives the project its meaning.

But the keeper speaks another language.

The first attempt at an agreement remained on paper. In it, I appeared as a co-creator, with a voice and a vote in the garden's evolution. The keeper wanted open field. We chose, then, a clearer path, one that would preserve what had already been built. We signed a second agreement, a conventional one. A tenancy. Simple. Clear: monthly rent, payment in seeds, the occasional possibility of stones.

Today, months after that signature, I receive stones. Partial. Late. For the second time running. And the manager administers in his own fashion, aloof from co-creation, from the map, from the book that sets out the pillars of what we are attempting to build here. My intuition — that voice one learns to heed after six years of swallowing dust — keeps me watchful.

Perhaps there is merely a different language. I speak in seeds; he only knows how to carry stones.

IV. The Curse of the Land

To lay the blame on the keeper alone would be unfair. The land itself is unwell.

Tulum. To pronounce that name today is to invoke a broken spell. What was a bohemian dream, a refuge of backpackers and seekers, has become a theatre of economic and ecological war. Sargassum arrives by the tonne, rotting along the shore, frightening off those who came for sun and peace. Criminality filters through every crack: extortion, violence, disappearances. The social fabric frays beneath the weight of an obscene inequality.

And from above, the campaigns of disrepute. Narratives that batter the place's image, that frighten the visitor, that devalue every brick, every palm, every square metre. The property market fell by thirty-four per cent. What was once worth gold is now sold off as scrap.

To this is added a whole country where justice is a hollow word. Where the courts are labyrinths designed to wear the honest man down. Where collusion is the method. Faced with that, my wager has always been a different one: to build upon my own rules, written in a manifesto and backed by seeds. A ground no court can dispute.

The place is wounded. By the sum of unchecked ambition, institutional neglect, and a nature that presents her bill.

V. The View from Above

Six years. Six years of contemplating this garden from the distance that perspective alone can give. Six years of calls, of messages, of recording each season, each crack, each promise kept.

Distance, here, is height. From this vantage one sees the whole garden: what it was, what it is, and what it is called to be. Whoever walks among the furrows knows the soil up close; whoever watches from on high takes in the full design. The keeper tends the ground. The owner keeps the blueprint.

And it is the blueprint, in the end, that decides where everything grows.

The figures arrive at their own pace, in whatever currency each chooses. From above they are read calmly, recorded, weighed. The serenity of one who holds the whole vision is an advantage that no one below can contest.

VI. The Price of Freedom

The property has been in transition for some time. The market has drawn in, interest has cooled, and each season brings its own weight. Even so, the decision to release it is serene, considered, and mine.

This property was conceived as a pillar. Over the years it has gradually become a drag, pulling against the direction of the vision. My life's project can no longer keep sustaining an asset that, in turn, wears it down. It is like swimming with lead tied to one's ankles: it keeps one afloat, yes, but it prevents one from reaching the shore.

Selling today carries a cost. It hurts to accept the devaluation. It hurts to see what took so much to raise handed over for less than it would be worth in another time. But it hurts more to stay. It hurts more to watch the manifesto I wrote in hope turn into a dead letter on ground that rejects it.

A friend — a true one — is out there. Promoting. Showing. Persisting. To him I entrust the transition and, above all, the closing of this cycle. A closing I choose myself, on my own terms, at whatever pace the vision sets.

VII. The Last Seed

The day will come — it has to come — when the buyer signs. When the keys change hands. When Avalon Tulum ceases to be my name, my weight, and my cross.

That day, the money I receive will be modest. It will be stone. It will be currency that melts.

But that day, for the first time in six years, I shall have the freedom to turn those stones into what they were always meant to be: seeds. Sovereign. Digital. Mine. Far from the sargassum, far from the corruption, far from the keeper who speaks another language.

And then, at last, I shall be able to sow elsewhere. Or simply, to rest.

For a garden is measured by what one learns before letting it go.

We live in an era where the concept of “flowing” has become an art of resilience and consciousness. We often find ourselves navigating through environments that invite pause and containment, offering us a valuable opportunity to question whether certain dissonances stem from our own internal tuning or from collective dynamics that challenge us to strengthen our essence. It is a luminous reminder of the importance of caring for our inner temple, making conscious decisions about what we allow into our body and mind, and always seeking truth, natural healing, and the full freedom of being.

Development: The Urban Metaphor and the Conscious Pause
Yesterday, I embarked on a beautiful journey to Zürich with my partner, with the purpose of attending Clara Sophia’s concert. The journey was a river of harmony and enriching conversation. Upon arriving in the city, we observed an interesting metaphor of contemporary urban design: the traffic lights. I noticed how the road architecture invites prolonged pauses, prioritising stillness. As we observed the rhythm of the city, I reflected on how these spaces teach us to practise patience, to observe our surroundings with fresh eyes, and to seek alternative routes, maintaining our internal flow in perfect calm amidst external rhythms.

We chose to elevate our vibration before the event, consciously deciding how to spend our energy. With ample time to spare, we treated ourselves to an experience at a Hammam, a space of purification, relaxation, and delightful flavours. Afterwards, a stroll took us through beautiful gardens full of life and flowers, a true oasis that disconnected us from the urban noise.

The surroundings, with their touches of Gothic and ancestral architecture, invited us to wander through constructions where stone and time seem to vibrate in unity, reminding us of eras when humanity lived in greater harmony with its environment.

Climax: The Sonic Embrace
Our final destination was a temple of masterful architecture. We positioned ourselves in the front row, right in front of the podium where Clara Sophia and her partner Yuval awaited us. As the scene began, beautiful ancestral frequencies flooded the space. It was a sonic embrace lasting over two hours where time stood still; singing, dancing, harmony, peace, and love intertwined in an atmosphere that transcended the modern to connect us with our purest roots.

Conclusion: A Collective Compass
This journey leaves me with a profound and beautiful reflection on how we choose to inhabit this planet. It invites us to constructively orient our collective priorities: where do we direct our energy and social permissions? It is a call to align our compass as a society to empower those practices that truly nourish life, holistic health, and freedom of movement, fostering a world that celebrates existence in its most maximal, pure, and luminous expression.

The aim of these custodial wallets—which specialise in Lightning—is to keep you active on the second layer.
Lightning-to-on-chain swaps within these apps are both expensive and risky. They are best avoided.
Instead, use dedicated swap channels: send via Lightning, and let the external service handle the conversion to on-chain efficiently and cost-effectively, following your instructions.

I’ve just read your message. I hope you haven’t fallen into that “trap”.
This protocol (Nostr) is certainly quite entertaining, but it’s always highly advisable to bear in mind its connection to the bitcoin ecosystem; that’s what makes it even more brilliant. But at the same time, what makes so important to practise self-custody: such as running your own node, your own relay, or using a non-custodial LN wallet. And, of course, stop relying on just one client out of the many that utilise the protocol. This would broaden your mind and perspective, and help the whole community learn to spot any dodgy “moves”.
Btw., what I’m mentioning here — the positive aspects — is actually part of the features for which BIP110 is being promoted; in my view, everyone participating in the network should analyse and implement it.

Each day that passes immersed in the Bitcoin ecosystem, thinking and acting under the logic of a true circular economy, makes one truth increasingly inescapable: the efficacy, simplicity, and utility of interacting within this tech stack is revolutionary. Moving on the base layer (On-Chain), expanding micropayments (Lightning), and communicating without censorship (Nostr)—all under the unwavering banner of self-custody—is not merely a financial alternative; it is the architecture of freedom.

However, whilst we build and operate within this technological trinity, the noise outside is deafening.

The Noise, Blindness, and Lack of Sovereignty

The confusion transmitted by the vast majority of people—perhaps a reflection of a society that has surrendered its biological sovereignty, vaccinating itself and dragging along dietary habits that dull the mind and spirit—is generating a massive obstacle. This cognitive fog not only affects their health but acts as a brutal brake on the genuine adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender. People want the price, they want the speculation, but they flee from the responsibility that sound money demands.

Given the nature of this situation, observing community communications in this space (Nostr) and other environments reveals an evident pattern. The manner of transmitting messages, the superficiality, and the lack of “essence” in what is published lay bare what is truly happening at the root of our ecosystem: there is a profound disconnect between the tool we hold in our hands and the understanding of why we need it.

The Silent War Within the Protocol

Whilst the masses watch the price, the future is being decided in the code trenches. I have been republishing and analysing events concerning the recent debates between Bitcoin Knots (BIP110) and Bitcoin Core, in which Matthew Kratter actively participates. To ground this and make it simpler for you, I have even dedicated time to designing a complete infographic summarising what it is all about:

Why do I do this? It is not to sell, nor to promote the products or services that sometimes emerge as by-products in these developer conversations. I do it with a far more urgent objective: to demonstrate that we must take action, at least those of us who bear the responsibility of running a node.

These debates are not nerd drama; they are the fight for the soul of the protocol. It is the difference between a Bitcoin that resists censorship and a Bitcoin that adapts to corporate conveniences. At present, perhaps few observe it, or they are simply incapable of discerning the nature of the problem. But in the long term—and this being one of Bitcoin's fundamental premises—what is debated in the code today will define our freedom tomorrow.

The Illusion of Convenience: Tourists in Your Own Revolution

Today we must be aware of what is happening and, above all, act. Because let us be honest: what good does it do to “zap” your friends through custodial Lightning wallets when perhaps tomorrow those servers will be shut down, confiscated, or centralised by a government in power?

If you use a custodian, you are not using Bitcoin; you are using a database that simulates being Bitcoin.

The problem replicates in our communication. Many are on Nostr, but they act as if they were on the centralised social networks to which they have sadly become accustomed. They post for posting's sake, seeking validation rather than building digital sovereignty. Perhaps you continue using Web2 networks in parallel; that is your decision. But if you are on Nostr and cannot discern the ideological battle being waged at Bitcoin's root, then you are merely a tourist.

Conclusion: Self-Custody or Irrelevance

Being in the ecosystem does not make you free; self-custody and conscious action do. The battle for sound money and sovereign communication is not won with likes nor with balances in third-party applications. It is won by running nodes, signing with your own keys, understanding protocol debates, and rejecting the comfort that makes you vulnerable.

The noise outside will continue. The confusion of the masses will persist. But at the root, the code does not lie. Wake up, run your node, take the keys to your Lightning, and stop treating Nostr as if it were Twitter (X), Meta or Google. The revolution is not zapped; it is built.
