I don't see how this is complicated: The people who bet on prediction markets have an incentive to get things right, since that's how they make money, but sometimes the betters are mistaken, particularly about matters they know little about. Prediction markets have no mystical power to always give the correct answer.

There are of course other ways Canada and the EU could work together productively, but also ways in which Canada would give up sovereignty to little advantage (e.g., joining the customs union, or aligning with the Euro). * Protectionist
* Hostile to allies; friendly to dictators
* Doesn't care about debts or deficits
* Scorn for rule of law

It is indeed true that Mr. Mulroney was able to win most of the francophone seats of Québec in the 1980s. But it wasn't because the party had committed supporters, or because Quebeckers had decided they supported conservatism; it was because Mr. Mulroney spoke French like a francophone (the first such Tory leader since 1867), and the Liberals had an anglophone leader. The party bloomed, but the roots were shallow and were scorched.

When was the last time was the last time there was a solid Conservative voting bloc in Québec? Before the Quiet Revolution? Before the WWI conscription crisis? Before the hanging of Riel?

A deeper analysis would look at the fall in vote share for the #CPC in each riding. But the people who look at such analysis are unlikely to find anything surprising: PM Carney is very popular when Pres. Trump is threatening Canada. The party hasn't found a solution to that yet.

Chicoutimi—Le Fjord is a loss for the party, but within the party there's never much expectation for victories in Québec. The #CPC has (alas) never had much of a base here; neither did Conservatives in the old days.

After my Summer #roadtrip, one of my major conclusions is that Canada ought to invest in bringing the #TransCanadaHighway in Ontario up to freeway standards. You don't need to imagine any brilliant strategy here, this is just Ottawa working as it's supposed to: providing a path to building big things, while (mostly) avoiding putting taxpayer money into iffy investments.

(By contrast, the previous Trans Mountain Expansion project saw legal hurdles derail the initial proponent, then the feds taking over construction, the former upsetting those who favoured the project, and the latter upsetting those who opposed it.)
