If you monitor the use of #AI tools in research, you might think (like me) that (1) they're incapable of top-notch #PeerReview, and (2) they're getting better fast. If so, it's time to grapple with an almost inevitable new study:

From Gary King and Steven Worthington: "We show that AI-generated article reviews are now better, by every measure we could construct, than reviews written by well-compensated human experts and judged to be of unusually high quality by journal editors and authors."
https://gking.harvard.edu/files/peerless.pdf

#Metaresearch #ScholComm

Someone used bogus #copyright complaints to remove news stories critical of #Florida #Republican Michael Carbonara from #Google search results. "Carbonara’s campaign has denied any involvement."
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/op-eds/4707237/dmca-takedown-abuse-political-censorship/

[@bc_butler](https://scholar.social/@bc_butler ) gets to the heart of it: "This isn’t a glitch; it’s a predictable feature of a broken system. Civil liberties advocates have warned for decades that the DMCA’s notice-and-takedown regime effectively hands bad actors a low-cost, automated censorship button."

#Censorship #Copyfraud #USPol #USPolitics

      In reply to nevent1q…zgv6
_________________________

Update. Another article made it through peer review (at Springer) leaving the false impression in many passages that all #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs and that all or most APCs are to be paid by authors out of pocket. This despite the fact that it acknowledges the existence of no-APC #GreenOA and #DiamondOA, and the existence of APC funds other than the authors' pockets. It just doesn't let these acknowledgements change or qualify sweeping language in other parts of the article.

For example, the title and abstract are about the high costs to authors of OA as such, not APC-based OA. Table 2 is about the pros and cons of OA as such for junior faculty, when it's really about APC-based OA.

It's so easy to say APC-based OA when you mean APC-based OA. It's so wrong to say OA without qualification when you mean APC-based OA.
