aware of the impending Allied landings in the Philippines, the Japanese navy assembled nearly all of its remaining warships and launched an audacious attack, hoping to destroy the landing forces and inflict a crippling blow on the Allied Pacific fleet. The Battle of Leyte Gulf would become the largest naval battle of the Second World War—a resounding Allied victory and the last gasp of the once-dominant Japanese navy.

The Japanese commanders realized that they were significantly outnumbered and outgunned. But they also realized that the loss of the Philippines would doom the Japanese navy. If the navy was to be destroyed, they concluded, it should go down fighting.

The battle began on October 23, 1944, when two American submarines intercepted one of the Japanese fleets, torpedoing and sinking two Japanese heavy cruisers, and it continued for the next two days, in what amounted to essentially four separate naval battles.

On October 24, the American light carrier USS Princeton was sunk by a Japanese warplane. The Princeton would be the largest American ship lost in the battle. On October 25 a large American force that included six battleships (five of which had been damaged or sunk at Pearl Harbor and later repaired or rebuilt), intercepted and squared off against the Japanese “Southern Force,” which included two battleships. The ensuing action was the last battleship-to-battleship combat in history. In fighting that began in the late afternoon and continued into the night, the Japanese force was decimated and both Japanese battleships were sunk. Also on the 25th, two American escort carriers, the Suwannee and the Santee were hit by suicidal Japanese kamikaze attacks—the first use of kamikazes in the war.

Fierce and desperate fighting continued across the next two days, involving surface ships, submarines and both land- and sea-based aircraft. With over 200,000 combatants, by some measures it was the largest naval battle in history.

By the time it finally ended the Japanese had suffered their worst naval defeat of the war and the Allied invasion of the Philippines proceeded safe from Japanese naval interference. In the aftermath of the battle the Japanese navy no longer posed any significant threat.

The Allies suffered over 3,000 casualties in the battle (nearly all Americans) and twelve American ships were sunk. The Japanese lost 28 ships and suffered an estimated 12,000 casualties.

Eighty-two years ago today, the Battle of Leyte Gulf was underway.

The 1945 painting by Japanese artist Saburo Miyamoto is titled “Banda Unit Fighting Fiercely off the Philippines,” depicting the first kamikaze attacks of the war.

Gas is expensive, so you are going to vote for the party that shut down Keystone XL, opposes combustion vehicles, and pushed to ban fracking?

Democrats say they want cheaper gas. Their record says the opposite.

On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden's first day in office, he revoked the Keystone XL permit. That line was built to move about 830,000 barrels a day from Canada to the Gulf. He killed it for climate politics. More than a thousand construction jobs went with it.

A week later he paused new oil and gas leases on federal land and water. Kamala Harris had already said, on September 4, 2019, "There's no question I'm in favor of banning fracking."

In March 2024 the EPA issued tailpipe rules designed to force most new cars and light trucks toward electric or hybrid by 2032.

Gavin Newsom signed the California order to ban the sale of new gasoline cars by 2035. Other blue states lined up behind it.

They spent years treating American oil like a moral problem and American drivers like an inconvenience. Then they act shocked when the price board lights up and families have to choose between a tank and a grocery run.

You cannot choke off supply for a decade and then campaign as the cheap-gas party. The policy was the point. Higher prices at the pump were the tool.

A party that shuts pipelines, restricts leases, and tries to retire the combustion engine is not fighting for cheap gas. It is fighting for control of how you move.

When Democrats scream about gas prices, remember this.

High gas prices are temporary. Communism is forever. They will take the pain at the pump if it moves the country off oil and onto the government.

Mark Carney ran to Europe for help. They have the same problem.

They have all become dependent on the United States as the sugar daddy. Lopsided trade deals filled their export books. American taxpayers carried the heavy end of NATO.

In 2026 the United States is expected to spend about $850 billion on defense. Europe and Canada together are expected to spend about $634 billion. Canada only hit NATO's old 2 percent target in 2025.

NATO's new target is 5 percent of GDP by 2035. That bill comes due whether they like the tone from Washington or not.

Because they did not have to pay for their own defense, they spent the savings on bigger government. They called it democratic socialism. It is still socialism, and it fails.

France's public debt is about 118 percent of GDP. Italy is near 139 percent. France's deficit is headed for 5.4 percent of GDP this year.

They can play proud victims all they want. They do not have the money to go it alone. Banding together will not save them.

Canada's EU trade deal, CETA, has been only provisionally applied since 2017. France, Italy, Poland, and several other EU countries still have not fully ratified it.

That is the help he went looking for. They all need the United States.

In 1920 the yacht building business that Bill McCoy operated with his brother Ben was struggling. So, Bill assessed the situation. He knew that he was a good sailor who knew how to make fast boats. And he knew that Prohibition had created a huge demand for liquor in the American northeast. Recognizing the business opportunity that presented itself, Bill McCoy seized it, becoming the king of the rumrunners, one of America’s most celebrated and notorious bootleggers.

McCoy bought a 127-foot fishing schooner capable of carrying 6,000 cases of alcohol and retrofitted it to make it one of the fastest commercial sailing vessels on the Atlantic coast. He registered his ship in Great Britain and renamed it “Tomoka.” He was in business.

He would load his cargo of spirits in Nassau in the Bahamas, then sail to the Jersey shore, anchoring between Sandy Hook and Atlantic City, just outside the three-mile boundary of international waters. Customers would come out to him in small boats that could evade the Coast Guard, and McCoy would sell them the booze in sacks that held nine bottles each. Ben McCoy would bring out supplies to the Tomoka, so that she never had to port.

McCoy made no effort to hide what he was doing. In fact, he welcomed the publicity. He boasted that he never diluted his product (as many bootleggers did), and that he never paid a dime to organized crime or to bribe law enforcement. And no law prohibited him from selling liquor in international waters. His enterprise was so successful that he soon added four more boats. In a little more than two years he sold an estimated two million bottles.

McCoy’s brazenness and his celebrity status infuriated government authorities, however, and they were determined to shut him down. In 1923, after first getting the tacit consent of British authorities, the Coast Guard was ordered to arrest McCoy, and to sink the Tomoka if he resisted.

On November 25 the Coast Guard cutter Senaca steamed out to the Tomoka and sent over a 15-man boarding party. When they were aboard, the commanding officer ordered McCoy to bring his ship into port. Instead, he set sail and raced away, with the boarding party still on board. The Seneca opened fire with her four-inch deck guns. As the shells from the Seneca started dropping closer to his ship, McCoy realized the game was up. He lowered his jib and surrendered. On board the Coast Guard found $60,000 in cash (over a million dollars in today’s money) and only 400 cases of the original 4,200 case cargo.

Once brought ashore reporters asked McCoy how he intended to defend himself against the charges. He answered with a smile, “I was outside the three-mile limit, selling whisky, and good whisky, to anyone and everyone who wanted to buy.”

But after two years of legal wrangling, McCoy ultimately decided to accept a plea bargain. He pled guilty to violating the Volstead Act and was sentenced to nine months in jail.

After serving his time, McCoy retired from rumrunning, returning instead to the boat building business. He also became a successful real estate investor and when Prohibition ended he cashed in on his notoriety by putting out his own brand of whisky, called “The Real McCoy” and featuring the Tomoka on the label.

William Frederick “Bill” McCoy, the King of the Rumrunners, died in Florida at age 71 on December 30, 1948, seventy-seven years ago today.

There is a border wall in the Middle East that looks like it was built to hold back a zombie apocalypse, but it was not built by Israel. It stands on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip, separating the "Palestinians" from their Arab neighbors in Egypt.
To the uninitiated, the sheer scale of these fortifications, with their massive concrete slabs, subterranean steel walls, and layers of razor wire, might seem excessive for a border shared between two Muslim populations. But this architecture reveals a truth that the global narrative tries to bury.
The Egyptian state has diagnosed the radical ideology festering within Gaza as a highly contagious pathogen. As an Iranian, I recognize this sickness immediately. I watched a strain of this extremism feverishly consume my own homeland, destroying it from the inside out. Egypt sees the same symptoms manifesting at their doorstep, and they have quietly implemented a hermetic seal to protect their own nation.
While the world condemns Israel for maintaining a security fence, they remain silent as Egypt fortifies its border against the exact same people. This double standard exposes a harsh reality. The fact that an Arab nation feels the need to build such extreme fortifications proves that the danger inside Gaza is not an Israeli fabrication. It is a reality so malignant that even their own Muslim neighbors have realized that opening that gate is not an act of mercy, but an act of suicide.
