I let some people borrow my TWSBI Eco fountain pen to sign a fancy guest book on Saturday, thinking that it’s plastic and quite sturdy, but one person managed to drop it, while open, on a cement floor, directly nib down. The nib got bent and is not recoverable. I have learned an important lesson about how people used to disposables treat pens, and I will never lend anyone even a cheap fountain pen again unless they are a fountain pen user themselves. I might try to buy a replacement nib, thought it’s almost the cost of a new pen. #fountainpen

At the Ruth Asawa show this weekend, the curator told me Asawa practiced blind contour drawing her whole life and even her huge and elaborate floral ink drawings were blind contour (always? Sometimes?). How could that be possible!? I decided to learn more about contour drawing and try it myself. This wasn’t pure blind contour and I did lift the pen, but I mostly looked at the leaf.

Sometimes when political life becomes too much I take refuge in the details of doing my job. But lately work, too has been extremely difficult. When things get too much and I’m totally drained, I can’t even bring myself to do art or write. The garden though, the garden seems to remain a refuge. Also I took some agaves that were in pots outdoors and put them in the ground. It’s a part of the garden where most plants dry out and look sad all summer.
So I think a mix of ruschia and agave has a good chamce of being happy. It’s a sort of soft agave. I don’t know the exact species. #gardening #sfba

Man, digging is hard. It doesn’t help that there’s a weid layer of plastic grid/mesh under the grass. I think whoever put down the turf maybe unrolled it on some kind of nonbiodegradable wide spaced plastic mesh and now I’m having to tear out microplastics out of the garden bit by bit. Also I keep finding marbles in the dirt.

And this afternoon I’m going to take Mr Dys with me to Flowercraft to help cart some compost home and some additional groundcover cellpacks. We don’t have a car so we take garden supplies on the bus.

That’s also how we transport our Christmas tree. In SF that’s a little unusual but in NYC it seems way more common, which was probably how I thought it would be no big deal and was surprised by the surprise the first time. #gardening #sfba

I want to make a zine before the end of the year. It's been one of my goals. Ideally, one of those simple fold and cut things. I'm thinking I'd do physical cut and paste for the content and then use a copy machine to make copies. Is that still even a thing you can do? Used to be the way you got a zine done was find a friend who worked on the overnight shift at Kinkos and get a discount. I bought a 6 quart InstaPot on sale. I’ve wanted one for a while but it seemed silly since I already have a rice cooker and a slow cooker.

The first thing I want to make is idli batter using the yogurt setting. I’ve been using instant mix and want to try using idli rava and urad dal. It sounds like a lot of work but less than starting with idli rice.

I planted lavender in my garden a month or so ago and have noticed that it’s doing very well _and_ squirrels don’t fuck with it. So today I bought four more six inch tall lavenders and put them in the ground. I put them under wire baskets for the first two weeks just in case, but once they’re rooted well I’ll uncover them. My drought tolerant garden is slowly coming along, week by week, month by month, year by year. This year though I really must remember to sow wildflowers during the rainy season.

It need not be vegan or vegetarian as I’m not, just dealing with egg shortage. But it’s a nice bonus if it is!

California is having an egg shortage caused by the bird flu. It’s probably going to be a while and I may as well adapt.

I watched a recording of my presentation at work and while I'm very happy with my energy and clarity, I noticed a problem with the Q&A portion:

*I interrupt people A LOT*

Some of it is sort of OK, as I just say "yep" "uh huh" and other little phrases to indicate I'm listening.

But I also start answering before people are done and speak over them. I can tell that while some people are OK with that, others get derailed from their point.
