I have a draft ready for this year’s Halloween-themed post, a brief review of a classic mystery novel. It should go up within the next couple days.

I was looking for a post on View from the Right and couldn’t find it, but I did find this good headline:

JOHN HOWARD DEFEATED BY FEMALE OPPONENT WITH GREAT LEGS

The main point, for those curious:

The issue here is the way women use their bodies and looks to assert their power over men in the political sphere. Women are already superior to men in the sexual sphere, that’s just a fact of life. So when women in politics use their sexual power in the manner of McKew, they are combining their equal political rights to men with their greater sexual power than men in order to give themselves greater political power than men. Thus the gyneocracy.

Foul language, but the guy gets his point across.

Part of me thinks that if copying a block of HTML to the top of the page to create a new blog post was good enough for Lawrence Auster, it’s good enough for me, but my site is already closer to the HTML ideal than any WordPress monstrosity.

The author’s two rules for writing with LLMs are good (“You may never use a single word an LLM suggests to you” and “Avoid encouragement”) are both good, but the role-playing and the convoluted process described at the end seem like more work than just writing on your own and asking an LLM for basic proofreading and style checking.

We asked dozens of librarians about America’s libraries — what they provide, what they need to survive.
Here’s what they told us.

Many answers are about as gay and self-important as you’d expect. I need to write an article about libraries and librarianship to get a sane viewpoint about them out there.

(The NYT want you to sign in to read this article, but reader view bypasses the prompt).

2026-10-01T15:41:02Z

Fellas: it’s over. I wanted to check out a couple French books, so I went over to my library’s stacks and the reorganisation project has hit the French section. Just absolutely eviscerated. Checking the online catalogue, ten of our eleven volumes of Maistre’s work have been moved to remote storage, and from what I can see, most every other author got similar treatment. Looking around, I see at least the Russians and Chinese have also been gutted recently. American literature was razed a while ago. The English, Spanish, and Italians are intact but their days are numbered.

One perk of working at an academic library was being able to browse the shelves and find all kinds of neat, obscure books. Looks like those days are about over.

Mysterious charmer (nprofile…29ua) brat-in-yellow 🫶🏿:niggablushhearts: (nprofile…wvyn) grips (nprofile…r2m8) tough to give good, actionable advice to someone I don’t know very well. My approach was online dating and prayers for St. Raphael’s intercession. People like to criticise it (and some of those criticisms are valid), but using CatholicMatch helped because it made it easy to filter for people who were already on the same page as me as far as religious views and relationship goals (marriage, not just casual dates).

Beyond that, I only have generic advice. Cafés made for good first date spots, then places where there was something to do (so less chance of awkward silences) while still allowing for conversation. I took dates to local festivals or museums, or walks around local parks, for instance.

The lain anime, game, and manga all have overlapping themes and aesthetics, but they’re actually three independent stories. “Lain” is the protagonist in each, but it’s a different Lain. Part of the reason it was called a “serial experiment” was that they’d have these distinct but related media. I don’t know if they ever considered this, but if the game and manga had been more commercially successful, I wonder if they’d have tried to continue into other media, like novels or live action movies.

I bought a Super Famicom and a Japanese PlaysStation years ago, but never got around to the original Famicom. The SNES is what I grew up with, so that’s what I’ve always been most interested in as far as retro games. I got the PS specifically for the serial experiments lain game.

okasion :archlinux: (nprofile…jnpj) the Divine Comedy is the greatest work of literature, so yes. I’d say that, the Iliad and Odyssey, and a sampling of Shakespeare as the most essential works of the Western literary canon.

In English, I’ve read Mandelbaum’s translation and some of Esolen’s; both are really good. It’s a dense work, but translator’s notes should help you out. There’s also the Digital Dante project if you really want to be serious about it, but this might be overkill for a first reading: https://digitaldante.columbia.edu/

Also, make sure you also read Purgatorio and Paradiso. It’s a single cohesive work, so you need all three to get the full experience.

okasion :archlinux: (nprofile…jnpj) almost anything by Shakespeare is worth reading, but Hamlet is among his best. With all of his plays, I’d recommend finding a performance of it, since he intended them to be seen, not just read. When I was working through a bunch of his plays several years ago, I was able to find a lot of filmed stage versions on YouTube.

What I’ve done in the past is watch one of those videos, then read a copy for a closer reading.

okasion (nprofile…jpq4) ah, I pitched the idea, but mom was too uncertain about changing (even though Microsoft changes things constantly!). I think if I lived close enough to give in-person tech support regularly, she might have been more receptive to trying Linux or a Mac.

I think most normies still don’t even really know what Linux is. It’s just Windows as the default, or a Mac if you’re an artist or something. Realistically, at this point, the normie OS’s are iOS and Android. I know people who do literally everything on a phone. Heck, I read an anecdote from a professor recently who had a student ask how to submit an essay in Word format, because he’d typed the entire thing on his phone (or edited chatGPT’s essay, more likely). Long term, I suspect that the type of people who use desktops are also going to be the type of people more open to trying Linux.

okasion (nprofile…jpq4) good news, even with all the usual caveats about how these stats are measured. Win11 is sufficiently bad that I’ve seen a small but non-trivial number of people finally making the jump from Windows to something else, so at least some of this increase is probably from genuine desktop users. I even pitched Linux to my mom last time she needed a new computer.

okasion :archlinux: (nprofile…jnpj) I worked in a corporate IT department for ten years, and got into librarianship for a change. Ironically, my IT experience gave me an advantage in getting my current position as a systems librarian, which is effectively an IT job. It’s 90% different IT work and a totally different vibe, so I’m definitely happy with the change, it’s just a little funny that I left IT to go into IT under a different name. I was originally thinking I’d do either reference or cataloguing.

I started working through the Analects recently, and this is a small but good example of why I like having Zhu Xi’s commentary. I knew 鮮 must mean something like “few.” Pleco doesn’t have such a definition, but Zhu Xi defines it in a way that makes sense.
