[custodians.online](https://custodians.online/ubu/ ) writing for the 20th anniversary of [UbuWeb](ubu.com ) summarizes six lessons from its design and operation:

1. Keep it simple and avoid constant technology updates. Ubu is plain HTML, written in a text-editor.
2. Even a website should function offline. One should be able to take the hard disk and run. Avoid the cloud - computers of people you don't know and who don't care about you.
3. Don't ask for permission. You would have to wait forever, turning yourself into an accountant and a lawyer.
4. Don't promise anything. Do it the way you like it.
5. You don't need search engines. Rely on word-of-mouth and direct linking to slowly build your public. You don't need complicated protocols, digital currencies or other proxies. You need people who care.
6. Everything is temporary, even after 20 years. Servers crash, disks die, life changes and shit happens. Care and redundancy is the only path to longevity.

On here enough now that I'm due for an #introduction ^^

I work with and on computers a lot. The technology motivation started as student interested in math but not academia, studying EE and learning lambda calculus in an intro CS class, asking if I could probe my laptop with an oscilloscope and see what the code was doing. Consistent dual focus has been on computer architecture and programming language implementation. I've worked professionally (so far, *I'm currently looking for work*) with firmware, developing OSS, and on a DARPA cybersecurity research project.

I do etchings for circuits and printmaking; share experimental (~classical) music combining sheet music and recordings [on youtube](https://www.youtube.com/@laissez-vibrer ); work a lot with paper: making it, origami, book binding, autography and drawing; and for digital design mainly use HTML+CSS, typst & lilypond, FOSS multimedia tools. Hoping to find more people here with generous knowledge and critical eye for really anything.

if you like hand-written HTML and the simplest of page composition I can't recommend enough net.art theorist Olia Lialina's "Prof. Dr. Style" as a search term
> [What] message is delivered by classic Prof. Dr. pages, looking primitive and all the same? > **Independence**> . Inside academic circles, a page made in Prof. Dr. Style shows off distance from the institution's corporate identity and its Content or Knowledge Management systems, which is not an easy status to achieve. Outside of academia, such pages are made by people who know everything about the internet, but are too cool to mess with web design.
see: *Prof. Dr. Style, Vernacular Web 3* (2010)
https://contemporary-home-computing.org/prof-dr-style/

on are.na: https://www.are.na/casey-gollan/prof-dr-style
and like lee (npub1nyf…u6g0) curate your own finds: https://leetusman.com/nosebook/prof-dr-style

#webdesign #html #indieweb

      > What if architecture prioritized repair, care, and maintenance; cut ties with fossil fuels; and did the necessary work to truly decarbonize, and decolonize the building industry? What would that look like?
> For some architects, degrowth has meant calling for a “global moratorium” on new construction, an idea that the most ethical thing an architect can do in 2025 is simply to stop building new buildings, instead thinking more strategically about how to make best use of the stock we have around us. In other circles, it’s meant cutting ties with the fossil fuel industry; building buildings with timber instead of concrete; and sourcing construction materials from local or regional manufacturers rather than global supply chains.
engineers of computer infrastructure should really take note of the climate discourse happening in architecture.

https://failedarchitecture.com/marx-and-degrowth-architecture/

#degrowth #permacomputing #architecture
